Review by Azure Night
"One of Sega's masterpieces..."
Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite video games of all time. I played this for the first time when I was about 8 years old and instantly fell in love. It's such an original game. On with the praises!
Sound: 10
Beautiful! The sound fx compliment the game very nicely. It's really funny to hear them say ''Hubbu hubbu'', ''MONEY!'', or them screaming ''WAKE UP!!!''... makes me laugh every time I hear it to this day. The music is cool too, there isn't a single tune on there I dislike. I find myself humming it after all these years, or just humming along as I play. Good stuff!
Graphics: 8
Maybe they were small sprites and used little graphical power, I liked them. ToeJam and Earl have some funny animations. Like when Earl falls and he bounces on his ass, piggy bank and all. Also when Earl's pants fall down and he blushes. Hahaha, some classic stuff in there. The worlds on the other hand get rather repetitious. Especially the sand levels. Those can get boring... but once you get to another green level you think ''Ahhh, better!''. Heh.
Control: 10
It's simple and too the point... A button is for sneaking and it is the trigger for any buttons you have and B or C open the present menu and open the map respectively. Nothing to complain about.
Game play: 10
Classic game play at it's best. You search different levels (25) looking for ship pieces. You get a hint at the beginning of each level if there is a piece in your level, then you go and look for the piece (If it's on the level) and then the elevator. Simple goal, but it can be a real pain sometimes. An example of that being if you accidently open up a randomizer present after finding out what a lot of them are. Aah! Very frustrating. Some of the enemies are cheap asses too, like lawnmower man. He can hit you REPEATEDLY with no escape until you die. Makes me want to jump in the screen and murder him! Ahem... Anyway, that just adds to the challenge. It's very fun, and long, so make sure you have plenty of time to play it! The random world feature also ups the replay value as it's not always the same. Booyah! This game gets Azure Night's seal of approval.
