Home Alone
Review by Phange
"Oh wow.... this game is FUN!"
There are very rare few instances where a game based on a movie is good. A few that come to mind are Goldeneye and Aladdin. You see, developers have a knack for making a game with only the outline of the story. Why? Because they haven't seen the movie... because it wasn't out when they started to develop the game. The obvious exception is Goldeneye, but it's still a general fact. Way back in the day when I had Sega Channel I played quite a few of those games, and back then I was pleased just to play them. Of course now I can remember all the horrible things those games had in them, but some really were fun. Home Alone was one of those instances. The game was basically an overhead action game where you go from house to house trying to set traps for the bad guys. This is done in a variety of ways, but more often than not it involves you shooting your slingshot at them. You have to keep them from flooding houses (the wet bandits, as they call themselves). I particularly enjoyed the Ultra Modern House, which had pre-set traps that would go after the bandits with some pretty humorous results. Anyway, the game is a press for time as you make from house to house stopping the bandits from destroying yet another piece of fine property. The more houses you save the better. Moving Macauly (well, Kevin in this game) is a breeze and outside you sled around!
Graphics:
The game has decent graphics for genesis. Nothing too fancy, but it gets the job done. I do have a bit of a problem with how young Macauly (Kevin) looks in the game. (He almost looks like a toddler). The game doesn't impress because it doesn't have to. What it does do is pretty standard genesis fare for that day.
Graphics: 6/10
Sound:
I don't remember too much about the sound department. If I recall correctly, the sound was pretty catchy. Sound really never was very important back in the early years of the Genesis. The game is all about gameplay (and licensce). Anyway, as far as I can remember it's pretty standard stuff.
Sound: 7/10
Gameplay:
I have already discussed the overall gameplay, but I failed to mention it's replay value. The game is fun to play over and over because I think it randomizes itself. Some of the houses are downright hilarious, and the game really tries to break the mold of the standard Movie-to-game stuff.
Overall this is a solid purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes action games that require brain cells.
