Warsong

Review by TBrayer

"The original in a extremely good series"

Langrisser is the first game in the series which has had 4 really good games and 2 not so good games over the years.

The graphics and speed are probably the biggest faults in this game. The terrain has an ugly grid and most of the background tiles look very repetitive and dont fit in with other tiles beside them: sometimes there are mountains that end abruptly, trails/paths look like deserts, torches in castles dont have the same floor as normal castle floor. Also sometimes you cant tell if the game as an overhead view or a 45 degree angle view. Also battles look more like something out of an original nintendo than from a sixteen bit machine. The leaders and troops are on the small side as well. The spell graphics are fairly we Langrisser is the first game in the series which has had 4 really good games and 2 not so good games over the years.

The leaders and troops are on the small side as well. The spell graphics are fairly well done but they are again somewhat blocky.

The game is exceedingly slow too. at the end of the game where you can be fighting with the full 8 characters and their troops you have to watch the cursor move to a leader and troop and drag it to where you want it 72 times and that is just for your characters. Unlike later Langrisser games it is impossible to speed things up here. The battle scenes can get boring as well since they are so slow. You can speed up the curser by pressing B but your finger can get tired by pressing it for a long time.

The sounds of the game and the music of the game are complete opposites from each other: the sounds are hardly better than beeps and boops while the music is actually quite good. The title screen was actually remixed and used in several other Langrisser games (Langrisser 2, Der Langrisser, Langrisser Dramatic ed. and Langrisser I + II).

The challenge in this game is very high. The computer AI and the AI that controls your units at the end of the turn is very stupid and will do a lot of things that will make you hit your head yelling ''Noooooooo!''. The flaws in the AI are especially apparent in levels where there are choke points or if you start out separated. At the later levels you have to use a lot of strategy to win because the enemy is stronger than you.

This game was translated (very badly) and renamed Warsong in the USA.

The story in this game is very good as well. There are many characters and a detailed prologue for every scenario as well as quite a bit of dialogue.

The best part of this game is the game play. Each main character can hire up to eight troops which he/she then uses in the scenario. If the leader dies, so do the troops. It was not so well implemented in their first attempt, but this is still a fairly good game for its age.ll done but they are again somewhat pixelated and blocky.
