The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Review by RollingSkull

"One of the last Genesis games, and one of the best."

As I stated in the synopsis, this was one of the final games released for the Genesis. I can't say that the experience is on the whole breathtaking, or that it uses every inch of the Genesis's processing power to provide you with eye candy the likes of which you've never seen before in this generation (Though a similar expression to a lesser extent might be true.), but it is a fun game that will keep you entertained for quite a while.

Graphics: 9

The sprites are pretty small , but they're very detailed for their size. The dinosaurs are all very distinct and detailed, the adjective of the day. The backgrounds reflect the same detail. The lush tropical forests are very pretty to look at, and they give way to caves, a bit less pretty, but still very detailed in places. Even the ''boss'' segments are very well done in places. They tend to get a little ugly looking at certain points, namely River Ride and Bike Chase.

Sound: 10

Varying screams, roars for each dinosaur, the roaring of the vehicle's engines all reflect the detail put into this game's sounds. The gun fire of enemy hunters, when using their default single bullet gun is merely a swish, but the rest of the sounds are wonderful.

Music: 10

Great tunes. Like in other JP games, they fit the jungle feeling, or the cave feeling if you're in a cave, while still keeping the feeling of action. The songs are great and surely won't get old on some of the longer levels.

Gameplay: 10

It's, more or less, your standard above-average top-down shooter, with a fair amount of intricacies. My personal favorite is how the enemy hunters will pick up power-ups and use them against you. The AI is great, some dinosaurs run away when you start to beat on them, and the hunters use each of their weapons effectively (Though watching them when they have land mines deserves a giggle or two.). You have a wide variety of weapons yourself, from gas grenades to machine guns to a cattle prod. They each have their own use against the enemy and one won't be collecting dust while you only use a certain one, partly due to lack of ammo to go on killing sprees. The levels have a good variety too. Hunting for certain objects, outrunning a T-Rex, and escorting a supply truck are just a few, not forgetting the good old Point A to Point B levels. Enemies are placed logically and provide a good challenge. The boss levels are very different, and give the game much-needed variety. One has you chasing a fleeing dinosaur in a motorcycle while another has you in a helicopter trying to fight off enemy choppers and gunboats while protecting a dinosaur's cage from a flock of Pteranodons. You have a mini-map with you at all times, and can call for an air support package assuming you've subdued, but not killed, enough dinosaurs. The game is quite fun and has many levels, more than enough to keep the game going. Combine that with a two player co-op mode and a two player battle arena (Unlocked with a code given in-game.) that's extremely fun, and you've got a great game.

Overall: 10

The Lost World: Jurassic Park is a model shooter. A superior product to almost all of the other JP games, this game is extremely enjoyable from beginning to end, and the two player modes add to the fun. If you still have a Genesis, look for this game to complete your collection.
