Review by MacDaddy Mike
"A wonderful side-scroller, if that's what it is."
Introduction
This is a very interesting and original game. It’s definitely my personal favourite game for the Genesis, even though it is so short. Can’t really think of an intro for this game, so let’s just rush into it.
Story 7/10
Sketch Turner is finishing some of his comics one stormy night, when lightning strikes through his window onto the page. Out jumps Mortus, the evil villain of Sketch’s comics. He states that he will kill Sketch and conquer the world, but he cannot do it there. So he thrusts Sketch into his own comics, to finish him off. But if Sketch can find a way to reach super hero status, he will be able to defeat Mortus from the inside.
GamePlay 10/10
Wow, this is awesome. It’s not like any other side-scroller I’ve ever seen, if it is a side-scroller. As you walk along each level, Mortus himself draws your enemies onto the page. You still follow the story in Sketch’s comix too. You can do lots of funky combos and use many items, including your pet rat, Roadkill, who will search the page for secret items, and is great for defeating one kind of enemy. As you beat levels in the game, your Super Hero Status raises. You’ll know when you’ve truly won, as there are 3 different endings. One where you lose, one where you win in beating Mortus, but lose in another way, and won where you’re truly super. As you progress, so will the story. It’ll truly feel like you’re caught in the middle of a comic book. It’s great.
Graphics 9/10
Every character is extremely detailed, just like a comic book character. Even the hand that draws them is great. There are many different backgrounds for each area, the effects are great, and the sketches in the instruction booklet are worth looking at.
Sound 7/10
No memorable tracks, but the sound effects are rather nice. Pretty clear, and very “realistic”.
Replay Value: Medium to High
The game is great, and it has okay replay value, but it’s a very short game. It’s only a couple of levels, but they are fun levels, and the game is fairly difficult. I don’t know what to say here.
To buy or to rent
.Buy, definitely. It’s a great game, the best game for the genesis (in my opinion), and is absolutely worth playing.
