Review by Dalton Of Zeal
"Most underrated game of all time? Yes!"
When I think back to the days of my Genesis system, this game comes to mind. A fun little side-scroller that makes you think. And on top of that, it is very addictive. And on top of THAT, it is actually quite original and innovative as far as side-scrollers go. So why isn't this game popular, or credited at all? Beats me. It's a shame no one seems to have played this game, as they are missing out on a lot.
Gameplay: 10/10
Here is where Todd's Adventures in Slime World really shines. The came consists of 6 HUGE levels, each with a different idea behind them. The first is a fairly linear training course, the second is a puzzle level where you must use your tools sparingly, the third is a big exploration level, the fourth is a speed round where you must get out as soon as possible, the fifth is an action packed romp through a very dangerous section of the planet, and the sixth is a very hard mode where you only get 1 life.
Now let me explain how you play the game. You are Todd, a space marine with a water gun and a computer map. You travel through the tunnels of Slime World, while avoiding the slime dripping from the ceiling, the slime alien things, the pools of slime, the alligator like things hiding in the floors, and other hazards. Shooting water at the enemies blows them up, but stand back, as the explosion of slime from the enemies can kill you. Your character starts off nice and clean, but gets dirtier and darker as the slime covers him. To remove the slime, take a bath in one of the small pools of water found in some areas of the planet and wash off. If too much slime covers you, you die and return to the last checkpoint. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, it is. But it is also a hell of a lot of fun! There are also many tools to interact with: a jetpack, slime cleanser, bait, etc...
This game is tons of fun alone, but there is a 2-Player option that is incredibly well done, to say the least. It's 2-Player simultaneous action through the 6 Stages of Slime World where the players must race to the finish or help each other out. This game never gets old, and the gameplay is so darn addictive.
Story: 5/10
Nothing special, but that doesn't matter. Todd must investigate Slime World. That's all. Who cares? Just play the game!
Graphics: 8/10
Nice, and easy to see. Lots of green in this game, but our hero is dressed in a nice blue suit with blond hair. The graphics do the job.
Control: 9/10
Takes a little getting used to, but the controls are very good. You can't change directions while jumping, though. Climbing up walls takes a while to learn, too. But once you do, you'll think the controls are great.
Audio: 4/10
The music is catchy, but the sound effects give me a headache. The sound when you covered in slime is a really loud buzzing noise, like those sound effects in RPGS where you try to use an item, but you can't. Turn the sound down and pop in a CD.
Replayability: 10/10
This game is still fun after all these years, and the stages are packed with secret routes and stuff, which should keep you busy. But most of your time will probably be spent on the 2-Player mode.
Buy or Rent: Buy this game NOW. You don't know what you're missing.
Overall, an excellent, very well done game. This game will always live on as one of the best side scrollers ever created, although no one has ever heard of it. It's a shame.. I really hope this review inspires some people to play this game and see what 2-D platforming is all about.
