Star Trek: The Next Generation: Echoes From the Past
Review by Colonel814
"Was fun, sometimes, but mostly tedious!"
Gameplay: (5.5/10)
The game was okay in this aspect. The objectives get tedious after a little while. One other thing: THIS GAME WAS HARD! It would have been impossible for me to beat this game without MDragon's FAQ! These missions were poorly constructed and I really kind of think they could have been a LOT better. The only real FUN I had playing this game was during the space battles. They were fun, but also became repetitive. Being able to ''control'' the bridge of the Enterprise was okay too, but there weren't enough options. You are able to control how much power goes to each ship system, and set a course to some planets/systems/moons in the game. You can also check through the ship's computer, and learn a lot about the world of trek, from warp speed, to shuttle types, from the enterprise systems, to weapons. But this is a video game, not a Star Trek technical manual.
Story: (6/10)
It was a little corny. (a do this and save the galaxy thing)
The plot unfolds through the game and is easy to understand, and it wasn't THAT bad, so you could bear with it.
Audio/Video (5.5/10)
The video part was acceptable, and this being a 16 bit game, I would have given it a 8 or 9! But this is a review of Video AND Audio, and the audio part really set this game back. The sounds were poorly constructed. The phaser sounds were the worst! Any away team noise was poor, and the music wasn't that great. (except maybe for the standard Star Trek music on the Bridge)
Replayability: (1/10)
This game was too hard and there weren't really any parts of this game worth playing it over again. The space battles (enterprise vs. other ships) were the most fun this game offered, and it wasn't really anything all that great. This game has VERY little replay value.
Buy/Rent
My god, you would have to be a HARDCORE Trekkie to like all aspects of this game. I am a Trekkie, and love Star Trek, but this game wasn't worth shelling out the $10/15 to find it in a video game specialty store. You might want to try it out if you have some extra money, but be ready to sell it on eBay! As I stated, the game has a ''computer'' that has a lot of Star Trek technical information, and you might just enjoy the game on that aspect alone. This game was too mediocre to warrant much fun from me, but this is MY opinion, and you might like it. Try to borrow this game from a friend who has lots of old games, and try it for yourself.
