International Sensible Soccer - Limited Edition: World Champions

Review by retrocraig

"The Great Amiga Game Gets The 16bit Makeover"

Sensible Soccer is world renowned as being the greatest football game the world has ever seen. For the Amiga and IBM PC, this game shone because of it's unique gameplay, something yet to be bettered. This classic was released in 1992 by Sensible Software, who in England are very highly rated. Now onto the Genesis version:

Graphics - 20/25
The Graphics in Sensible Soccer are nearly an exact copy of the Amiga originals. The players all look good, and the top down perspective is easy to see. The crowds are simple, as are the pitch markings. The options screens in the game are rather basic, and could have done with more colours. As a whole, the graphics are one of the best on Genesis soccer games.

Sound - 12/25
There is just a little music and no commentary in game. This music varies from game to game, and is generally weak. The sound effects in game are excellent, with boo's and cheers all over the place. The music in the options menu is usual football rubbish, but is generally better than the Fifa range. As a whole, the sound could have also been a bit louder, and does eventually get on your nerves.

Options - 20/25
The range of options available in Sensible Soccer is vast. It only includes international teams, but it does have a large amount of these. The options include league, cup and tournament competitions, and each offers slightly different games to play. In game you can also make substitutions and change tactics, an option not available in some other Genesis Soccer games. Overall, I think it has plenty of options and is good enough for all players.

Gameplay - 25/25
This plays exactly like the Amiga and PC version, and it is this that makes Sensi great. The way it feels like Soccer, the way it plays like Soccer, and the way it makes you want to play Soccer. This is all the magic of Sensible Soccer. Starting out as rock hard, it gets easier as you play. As it features a whole range of international teams, you can start against the easy and work your way up. The game itself plays fluidly, and is easy to control. It uses a simple but effective one button rule, and it's not easy to score everytime. You can also switch between players and link up play fluidly. Overall, the gameplay shines and gives the best game of soccer on the genesis, and on any 16 bit machine for that matter.

Overall = 20+12+20+25 = 77 or 8/10
A great football/soccer game, that is probably the best one other that Fifa 97. It lacks the extras to make it an essential purchase for everyone, but Soccer fans should consider it over the rest of the sports line up.
