"5 Asteroids heading towards earth, who is going to save the day Bruce Willis?"

Game : - Truxton
Platform : - Mega Drive
Genre : - Scrolling Shooter

Aliens are steering five asteroids towards earth, guarding them with a host of nastiest armed to the teeth, guess who's the only one stupid or should I say brave enough to try and stop them.

This shoot' em up casts you as a space fighter pilot inflicting as much damage as possible on the swarms of flying aliens and ground installations that are, naturally, trying to shoot you down.

There are a host of power-ups to be collected, as well as extra weapons, extra lives and more smart bombs. The smart bombs themselves are represented as skulls, and unleashing them causes a huge skull shape to flash across the screen, killing everything.

The end of levels baddies comes in a Varity of shapes ands sizes and usually in number of two to four. It takes a lot of firepower to eliminate them and even when you do, it's no rest for the wicked the alien scum keep coming.

Truxton grabbed my interest from the beginning despite its unoriginality. The graphics may not be the flashiest seen on the mega drive. But they are large and colourful and serve their purpose well. The power-ups are excellent, my favourite being the lightning bolt. All in all a great game that should be welcome in any shoot em up fans collection.

Presentation

Three skill levels easy, medium and hard, but all little else.

7 / 10

Graphics

Bright, with defined sprites, but wouldn't stand up to the current requirements and desires of the modern gamer, but has a great retro feel, which seams to be the current flavour of the month.

8 / 10

Sound

A decent, if rather tiny tune and basic effects

7 / 10

Playability

Easy enough to being with, getting rapidly harder, highly addictive stuff.

8 / 10

Lastability

Experienced blasters should be able to complete the game, if not, you will certainly have fun trying to complete this little blaster.

7 / 10

Best Bits

The end of level bosses are engrossing offering great variety with multiple style of bosses, from your monster sized boss to your swarms of little speedie bosses.

Worst Bits

it is quite a pity that the game only has around twenty or so levels, but these levels are large and will take some time to conqueror.

Alternatively

hellfire, another mega drive classic, which offers greater variety with two player facilities and superior longevity with almost double the amount of levels.
