Warsong

"Final Fantasy Tactics for the Genesis, Oh Ya!"

This game is by far the best game for genesis. It challenges the mind in 3 ways, logically, strategically, and just plain common sense. Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1 is very similar to this game, all the game is is you select armies to and squads to move in on enemy forces and complete pre-set missions. Once your squads are close enough, they can attack the enemies and they will either loose HP or stay the same. You also have Heroes that are extremely powerful and can sometimes kill entire squads in one hit. You can not let your Heroes die or you will have to reset.

The similarities between Final Fantasy Tactics and Warsong are noticeable; gameplay, magic/attack, multiple ground levels, multiple enemies, and characters have HP. Those are the most major similarities. The differences are harder to notice; graphics, the FF Tactics attacks are based mostly on stats rather luck, and FF Tactics have things in between battles, rather where Warsong has only battles all the time.

The game challenges you logically because you have to be able to know who the hardest enemies are and be able to go around them in the best way possible in order to beat the objectives. It challenges you strategically because you have to think what type of squads would be the best for the missions, who should be your front squad, what is your formation, where do you move, who do you attack with, etc. etc... And finally it takes common sense for the idea that if you have an army of 5 squads against 1 squad of 1 horseman you do not retreat.

The graphics for this game is very good. For a couple of reasons, one, they tried to make the graphics very basic and 2D and look the way it is and it succeeded. Two, they didn't try too hard to make the graphics look spectacular on a game that would take long to load if it was like that. And it would be pointless to have graphics like that on a logic mind game. The downfall in the graphics are they could and should of made the characters turn direction when they attack, get attacked, move, and retreat.

There isn't much to say about the sound but, it is synthesized and annoying after leaving it on, on a hard scenario for a couple of days. And by the way, there are sound affects when characters are attacked, swords slash, and arrows fly.

The gameplay is simple, you move your squads and heroes to the opponents and blow them out of your path. Your squads contain about 10 people. Their commands are move and attack. Move moves the squad and if they are in range of attack they may attack one squad or hero. Then the turn for the squad is over. Attack allows you to attack any squad or hero in range of attack. Then the turn for the squad is over. Your hero is an independent Unit that is incredibly strong with the power with sometimes exceeding ten squads. As far as I have seen when they get successfully attacked once they loose HP and they have 10 HP. One squad usually does 1 successful attack to your hero so that is why he can usually destroy ten squads before he dies. The commands are the same as the squads but there are more. They can Attack, Move, Do Magic, Treat and change their stance. Attacking and Moving are the same as the squads. Magic you can only do at some parts of the game and is like an attack but at a farther range. Treating restores HP, and changing there stance makes them go into different modes; attack, defence, etc... After one command is finished, your hero's turn is over. After every squad is finished and every hero is finished your turn in over, it is the opponents turn. As you complete missions you earn more money to buy infantry and I think this is a major positive thing about this game.

This game I recommend to anyone who loves Starcraft, Warcraft, FF tactics or any other game that challenges your mind to its limits. I recommend you to get a Rom and an Emulator of a site because it is a lot cheaper then the game itself, or I would just plain rent it.
