Eternal Champions

Review by birdieball

"A good, good game."

This is a damn good genesis fighter. This is the best fighter for Genesis, SNES, or anything else from that time. I fondly remember playing this game.

Eternal Champions is a 2D fighter. There are 9 characters to choose from: A warlock, a caveman, an assasin, a 1920s gangster, an acrobat, a Cyborg, a Vampire, a bounty hunter, and an atlantian god/gladiator. Each one of these people have standard moves, and some moves special to them. There is also something called internal strength, which allows really cool special moves, and each character has around 15 of these. The special moves include: energy balls, force feilds, ninja weapons, magic snakes, heat seaking missiles, shoe jets, flying punches, flying blades, skull bashing clubs, and all of that good stuff.

The sound and music are a little scratchy, but that is to be expected for genesis. Infact, for genesis, The effects and tunes are original. Each character has thier own backround (like a spooky town, an ocean, a rooftop, a city street, the middle of a lavaflow and more) and each backround has a unique sound. Each backround also has really cool fatalities. My favorite backround is the ocean, the characters stand in ankle deep water that looks like it is moving, and there are splash effects when you jump or fall.

Eternal Champions has a story too. Each character has thier own tragic story attached to them (you get to read it) and each person died tragicaly before they had a chance to help the human race. They are assembled by fate, and the winner of the tournament gets a second chance at life.

Eternal champions has an exebition mode. It also has a tournament mode. There is also a minigame in which you smash orbs.

This game also supports two players. With 2 players, you can play normaly or you can enter something called the battle room. In the battle room, you toggle different obsticles to be a factor in the game (there are floor blades, acid drips, stun bolts, flame jets and the like.)

If you are looking for a genisis game, get this one.
The only reason I took off a point was because some special moves are tough to pull off, and backrounds are sharper than the characters.

Overall, this is a great game. This is one that is way too overlooked. If you want a Genesis game, get this one. It should be about the price of a candy bar today...
