Warsong

Review by wanderer35

"The first game of a great series"

Storyline-8/10
This game's storyline may seem simple but is actually quite entertaining and interesting. Also a nice fact about this game is that the female lead stays with the party for most of the battles. The bad part about this game is that compared to Langrisser II there is generally lesser dialogue between the characters. Also similar to several strategic Rpgs this game also suffers from weak character development. Guys are basically a few one liner speech before they join your party.

Graphics-9/10
The pictures and stages were all nicely drawn. The portraits of the female characters were actually better drawn than the ones in Langrisser II.

Sound Effect/Music-10/10
Yes this game's soundtrack music is excellent and very catchy.

Gameplay-7/10
This game's gameplay was excellent until I played the sequel Langrisser II that I realisd that this game has major flaws compared to Langrisser II. Firstly you can actually get past many of the stages in Warsong without hiring much troops. However you wouldn't be able to get away with that in Langrisser II. Somehow I find this part about Warsong to be unrealistic since the commanders were too powerful. Very often the only way to kill an enemy commander was to use another commander. Your troops are basically cannon fodder when they fight again the enemy commanders. But in Langrisser II if you were to use your troops correctly they can even take down the enemy commanders. Another problem was that you can't let any of your commanders die. Yes because once they die in this stage they are gone forever and won't be here in the next stage and you won't even see them in the ending. I find this part to be frustrating since you have to practically reload once one of your weaker commanders die. In langrisser II you still get to keep your commander even when he dies.

But one of the main supriese in this game is that I only discovered a great information about this game many years after I completed it. The first battle which seemed impossible to win could actually be won. It is difficult and very challenging to do so. However the fact that a game made many years ago actually offers an alternate path to a single battle is something worth mentioning.
Conclusion-This game is quite fun to be played despite its flaws. I would recommend that you play this game first and then play its sequel Langrisser II.
