Captain America and the Avengers
Review by Superrpgman
"Avengers Assemble!!!"
Avengers Assemble! or A lesser known about genesis beat-em up.
4/10 Story: The Evil Red Skull wants to take over the world for some unknown reason, so he assembles a team of evil people using some sort of mind control device, and well, you the avengers are going to stop him. Yeah it's no Xenogears, but this is a beat-em up.
8/10 Characters:
You and a friend can assume the role of one of the four avengers. They alll can jump, punch, throw etc and they each have different weapons.
Vision: This wierd looking ''artificial being'' in a white suit who can fly when necessary, can breathe underwater, and has LAZER EYES!!!!!!!!!
Never really found him all that useful, but eh, the lazer eyes
(actually, it's a solar beam) are kinda cool, even if they seem to shoot pretty slow.
Iron Man: He's a guy in an iron suit who can use it to fly and also apparently provides air while underwater as well. He himself shoots some sort of beam from his arms with the suit which shoots faster then visions. Probably my second favorite hero in the game.
Marvel fans may have seen him in a couple other games, such as Iron Man/X-O-Man-A-War in Heavy Metal, and I believe that he was in a couple Arcade and Console Fighting games.
Hawk-Eye: An Archer, and I believe that he's Captain America's Bodyguard as well. Needless to say, he shoots arrows from his bow, which are actually pretty fast. He's overall pretty good I guess.
Captain America: The Leader of the Avengers. He's a war hero, and considered to be a one-man army. His weapon is a little more different, and it's what totally makes him rock! He throws his shield at the enemy, but like a freakin boomerang, which means that it'll knock the enemy down, then go back towards you, hitting any enemies in the way, and then you automatically catch the shield again.
Needless to say, he's my fave hero in the game. He's been in couple other games himself, such as Marvel VS Capcom.
7/10 Gameplay:
You go around beating up a bunch of different kinds of robots including a puncher, one that shoots you with a lazer pistol, and one that extends his long arm and chokes you, but the bosses are mostly human for the most part.
Another thing that adds a lil flavor to to bosses is what seems to be translation errors, like the mini-bosses you fight halfway through the first level. The fact that you get knocked down every time is probably a greater thing then you'd think
Them: Don't disturb us!
You: Why, should it go well?
Also, the fact that you get knocked down every time for the most part is probably a greater thing then you'd think, as it doesn't let them beat on you more, and give you a chance to back off for a second.
Voice 7/10:
It's pretty cool how this is a genesis game, and yet a lot of this game is voiced, even if there only seems to be maybe 3 voice actors. It's really cool hearing the classic ''Avengers Assemble!'' at the beginning of every level, and when you die, you say ''No! I can't looooose!''
Unfortunately, every one of your character has the same voice, but still, for it's time this was incredible!
Music: 7/10
It's nice, all of it has got the whole ''Let's kick some butt!'' atmosphere, but still, it's quite enjoyable.
Graphics 7/10
I'm not one to say or care much about graphics. The graphics are good I guess, but no, they're nothing special.
Overall: 7/10
It's a good beat-em up whether you play it via ROM or via finding it at your local store. It's probably pretty hard to find at a store, but if you find it, it's not like it's going to set you back $300. Heck, you could probably get it off of ebay for less than $10. And while you're there, you might wanna check out another really sweet superhero beat em up, The Tick.
So, if you're looking for a fun, cheap 16 bit superhero beat-em up to play once in a while, I'd definitely suggest this game.
