Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Review by redskinStu
"Top-notch D&D action, top-notch RPG"
Warriors of the Eternal Sun is without a doubt one of my favorite games.
In my opinion, it has an excellent blend of action, story, customization, secrets and a little humor.
GRAPHICS: I feel the graphics in this game are some of the best ever seen on the Genesis. The outdoor environments are very richly colored, while the different regions all have a unique look. Indoors, detail is quite good, especially considering this game was developed before 1992. Characters, monsters and spell effects all are illustrated very nicely.
I thought they did a particularly good job on illustrating the outdoor battles. The characters, monsters and spell effects are really cool looking in outdoor battles. 10 out of 10.
CONTROLS: Although Warriors of the Eternal Sun is quite a deep RPG, the controls are easy to use. Menus are organized logically, and most of the time you only need to use one button to make any decision. Also, the game has one of the best auto-mapping features ever devised. The characters move easily indoors and out. One problem with the controls is you cannot ''strafe'' around corners. You must step out, then turn around. Often, this leaves you exposed to enemies attacking your flank. A good point to keep in mind. Another problem that bugs me about this game is the extreme difficulty in getting to the high character levels. For those of us who work for a living, we don't have 100+ hours to walk around making 140,000 XP for one character's level. There should have been more gold put in the game...10 out of 10.
STORY: Not a bad story, really. All the way through the game, you're trying to figure out how and why you ended up underneath the Eternal Sun. At the game's end, you find out the truth. The end movie has its charms. All in all, an interesting storyline. 8 out of 10.
REPLAY VALUE: Here's where Warriors of the Eternal Sun suffers a bit. You can play through with the different character classes, but there isn't much replay once you explore all the dungeons in the game. No variety in monsters, no variety in treasure. It would have been nice to save your high-level characters to play through again on more difficult skill levels. One cool feature is the number of small, hidden dungeons sprinkled around the valley. Some of them have very cool treasures and monsters. 6 out of 10.
OVERALL: You may have figured out by now Warriors of the Eternal Sun is one of my favorite games of all time. The balance of colorful graphics, D&D style play, the ability to choose your own party and many more options make this, in my opinion, one of the best games ever made for the Genesis. 10 out of 10.
