Herzog Zwei

Review by DarkHowie

"C&C the first RTS? Pah."

This game was one of the two games that was bundled with my Mega Drive (along with Sonic the Hedgehog). Back then, I called the game "Transformers" because of the ability to transform into a walking robot or an aircraft. Back then I was 5 years old, so I couldn't read nor speak english, so I didn't understand much of this game, so I gave Sonic the Hedgehog more attention that Herzog Zwei. That changed after a few years, after I started to understand the whole point of the game.

The point is as simple as all RTS, wipe out your enemies. It may sound easy, but it's not. Brilliant? At that time, yes. Still? Yup. The point is as I said, simple. Make, deploy and destroy. You can make all from small soldiers, motorbikes, tanks, healing tanks, ships etc. You can make them patrol a certain area, attack the base of your enemy, heal the wounds of your soldiers, make them conquer smaller bases (where you can refill gas for your main robot/aircraft). The variety of the maps is great, if not stunishing. Simply breath-taking (back then, it was 1989, it may not be as stunishing now...).

The music is also brilliant. At first, it's actually a bit irritating, but when you get used to it, you find yourself going around and whistling the tunes from the game. The music is not like most games where the developers recycled some old melodies and put them in the game. No, the music here is different. It's unique. The sounds are also quite annoying in the start, but in the end, you realize how brilliant those sounds really (gee, I sound stupid).

Is the game lengthy, you ask? There is no end. Just choose a stage and play. Nothing more to it. The graphics? Colorful and organized. 2-player modes? YES! It's the ultimate 1 on 1 game. 10/10? Yes. Forget Command and Conquer, this game is superior.
