"Amazing and underrated Genesis game."
Subterrania has to be one of the most underrated Genesis games ever. I'm not even into this type of game (space/shooter) but this game was great. I think the main reason Subterrania doesn't receive good reviews is because it has a big learning curve. You won't be able to just start the game and be good. When I first played Subterrania at a friends house I have to admit I did not like it. The ship was impossible to control and made seemingly easy maneuvers near impossible. It wasn't until' I purchased this game that I saw why my friends liked it so much. Keep reading to find out for yourself.
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics in Subterrania are unique and pretty fun to look at. It all has a very space like feel to it. The best graphical part of this game is the cut scene once you beat the game. I'm not sure how they created such a well-detailed 3D ship and managed to display it with the Genesis but it's probably some of the best graphics I've seen on the Genesis.
Sound: 10/10
The sound is probably the best aspect of Subterrania besides the gameplay. The sound is clear and usually fits the environment perfectly. Most of the music has a techno feel to it but it really blends well with the game. The soundFX are also top notch and fit the game well.
Gameplay: 10/10
A unique thing about Subterrania is that your spaceship is always being pulled down by gravity. Unless you keep propelling your ship upwards you will plummet to the ground. The concept of gravity in this game makes it more challenging and a lot more fun once you get the hang of it.
Subterrania takes some getting used to but once you figure out how to control your ship you'll realize just how great it is. The gameplay is outstanding in almost every aspect.
Story: 5/10
The story is pretty boring and doesn't really add much to the game. However, it's not so terrible that it hurts the game either.
Replay Value: 8/10
Once you have beat Subterrania you've no doubt mastered the art of controlling your ship. Since maneuvering your ship is half the fun you'll probably want to revisit some levels just to enjoy the ships handling. However, the games difficulty might make you think twice about playing it all the way through again.
Overall Score: 10/10
This game is loads of fun. In my opinion it's one of the top 10 Genesis games ever. Go buy it.
