"Somewhat fun, but not worth your time"

Are you ready for a racing track memorization exercise? You've come to the right game. Super Monaco GP is an oldschool 3rd person racer with a fairly cramped view and lousy controls. This kind of game may have been passable back in the day, but I don't review in a time capsule.

Super Monaco GP starts off with a nice presentation. The music in the game rocks. There are a good variety of tunes, and they're all quite fitting. I think the soundtrack might justify playing the game if you can find it for a LOW price. These tunes really set the tone for the game.

As far as graphics are concerned, Monaco GP is overall pleasing. There are plenty of tracks, each with their own nice scenery. You'll even be going through some tunnels. They have a nice, cheesy look.

It's once you start playing this game that it falls flat on its face. To start off, there are clunky controls. you have the option of choosing an auto 4 gear shift, or manual 4 or 7 gear shift. The 7 gear shift is the only one that will give you a chance to win a race, but you will often need to suddenly switch 3 gears by pressing the d-pad. The car will crash often, and one crash is either a guaranteed poor finish or the end of the race. The faster speed with 7 gears is a deterrent. You have to basically memorize every little turn to do well. By the way, the save system for the world tour mode is terrible. Enjoy writing down 4 line passwords. Passwords are good, but there should be a more practical feature, since you will restart tracks often. There are about 20 tracks in the tour, and be prepared to be perfect on every one.

Even with its flaws, Super Monaco GP can be fun, with its simple and at times exciting gameplay. But this one should be avoided. If you want a good old-school racer, try Super Hang-On on the Sega 6-pak. Yeah, its World Tour mode is worthless, but the arcade mode(with the hold ABC press Start code) is fun and has simpler and more accessible gameplay.
