Cannon Fodder
Review by freeze43
"Better than the other conversions, Cannon Fodder at its finest"
Strange things do happen. The Jaguar falling on deaf ears is such an example, the sheer processing power of this machine ran rings around the SNES and Mega Drive and Cannon Fodder is a perfect example of this. The game's entrance music has a singer going along with it! Incredible for its age, and pulls off the wonders of Cannon Fodder with unparalled smoothness.
The game is sort of strategy. Worms fans will rejoice. It involves clicking to guide little men to killing other little men. To add flavour there are houses which spawn little evil men which you have to destroy, several environments (urban, jungle, artic etc.), vechicles and the oh-so-evil rocket snipers. In terms of gameplay, this game is near king with simple yet intriguing gameplay that will require you to split your teams for a 'runner' to take out rocket snipers, avoid slippery ice that puts you dangerously close to enemy guns and saving annoying villagers who will always get in the way! In that case, sometimes the game is frustrating- your first encounters with rocket snipers will have you weeping that the game was easy. Little effects like this, the houses exploding dangerous debris, pits traps etc. make what you thought was a little happy game into a warring nightmare. When you see some enemies/allies only wounded and crying in agony while bleeding to death, you begin to wonder where the humour went, but the end of each phase has your survivors jumping for joy with music so life is good.
Sound for that matter is spot on. While there is no in game music (that would only distract from the killin') the starting music as previously said is great, and the various tunes give the game a certain charm. The sound effects too, are great, ducks quacking, seals yelping, and guns blazing. Explosions are solid, the whizzzz of rockets from snipers becomes something to be feared. For it's time, the sound is fantastic.
Graphics on the other hand, are solid but sparse (apart from the ending and game over screens), completely with quite blocky sprites. Booby traps are hard to see obviously, but everything else is well shown.
Overall, the game is solid, quickly type of gameplay. It is very addictive but after awhile it admittadley gets so frustating that you feel to chuck in in the cupboard for a bit. There are a stupid amount of levels, so dont worry about it getting short. Great job all round!
