"It should have and could have been a whole lot better"

Trevor McFur on the Jaguar has the potential to be a great game. That being said, it's a rather mediocre game. The game is a standard horizontal shooter. You play as Trevor McFur in some little ship blasting your way though levels trying to achieve some goal that I never did fully understand. The following is a look at the different aspects of the game and what my thoughts on them were.

Graphics
Well, if there is one good thing about Trevor McFur, it's the graphics. They are very bright and colorful and look phenomenal. The sprites are the right size so nothing is overbearing or too tiny to see. With foregrounds and backgrounds to look at while playing, the game certainly is a piece of eye candy. However, one downfall to the graphics is that they look like it was developed for the SNES or possibly the Sega Genesis. This is the Atari Jaguar, the first 64bit system, capable of so much, and yet not tapped into at all. I felt as if there was a lack of trying on the designer's part to make the enemies in each level that exciting. In the first level you fight asteroids and purple blobs. They could have done much better,

Sound
Wow. Where is the music. While the in game music was there.. sort of... it was barely audible and certainly not memorable. I expect some nice sound in a shooter and I got hardly anything at all. The sound affects are bland and dull. A standard gun noise and little explosion are the most you get. Very sub par for any game, especially on the Jaguar.

Score 3

Control
Well, I guess another saving grace of Trevor McFur is the control. While not terrible by any means, certainly it is not excellent. The Jaguar is what hurts it here. The controller is just so awkward that the default control is difficult to get the hang of at first. Changing up the control helps a little bit, but still leaves much to be desired. At least it is relatively easy to control your ship.

Game play
I remember seeing some early pictures that pitted Trevor McFur as more of a 3D platformer than a Horizontal 2D shooter. I really wish that the game had been like that because that would have been more fun. Sure, shooters are nice and all, but Trevor McFur just feels like a repackaged Gradius or Darius game with little animals. It's almost like a 2D Starfox. Had the game been a 3D shooter, it would have been great, but it is instead a rather mediocre horizontal shooter. It really should have been a lot better than it is.

Score 4

Pros
1. The graphics are decent

Cons:
1. Hardly any sound
2. Average over all game
3. Isn't really fun

Overall Score 5.25 rounded down = 5
