  /\==================/\
 /__\==Introduction==/__\
/_\/_\==============/_\/_\

Although not everyone knows it, there are more than one version of this game.
And I'm not just talking about the N64 and Gamecube versions. There are
multiple different versions of the N64 game, and this FAQ aims to describe, in
detail, the differences between these versions. Enjoy. :)

  /\=====================/\
 /__\==Version History==/__\
/_\/_\=================/_\/_\

1.0 - 2nd January 2006 - Added all the information I know about the differences
between the versions.

  /\======================/\
 /__\==List of Versions==/__\
/_\/_\==================/_\/_\

First off, here's a list of the known versions of the game.

Version 1.0 - The original game. This was the one released in Japan and North
America at launch date, and for a short while afterwards. They came mostly in
Gold Carts, however there are some Grey Carts of V1.0, too, though these are
very rare.

Version 1.1 - This version started being produced shortly after V1.0. In V1.1,
some glitches were fixed, along with some other subtle changes.

Version 1.2 - This version was produced quite a while after V1.1. It is the
most common version, and the most heavily edited. (PAL (Europe and Australia)
N64 version is exactly the same as this, so when I refer to V1.2, I really mean
"V1.2 and PAL")

And of course, there's the Gamecube version.

Version GCN - This was the Gamecube version of the game, released in 2003 as a
bonus disc for those who pre-ordered "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker".
Some things in the game have been changed since V1.2.

  /\===================================/\
 /__\==How to Determine your Version==/__\
/_\/_\===============================/_\/_\

*Note* This only applies to NTSC (North American) copies of the N64 cart. If
you have a PAL copy (Europe or Australia) then you have V1.2, as PAL is exactly
the same as NTSC V1.2.

The simplest way to determine what version you have is to look at the cart. On
the front sticker, at the bottom, in the center, is a two lined code. The
bottom line of this code differs between V1.0, V1.1 and V1.2. Here's what the
code is for each version.

V1.0: NUS-CZGE-USA

V1.1: NUS-CZLE-USA

V1.2: NUS-CZLE-USA (01)

***IMPORTANT NOTE***
If you have a gold cart, and it's an NTSC one, then it is DEFINITELY V1.0. If
you have a PAL Australian one, despite it being gold, it is the same as V1.2,
and is NOT V1.0.

  /\===========================================/\
 /__\==Main Differences between the Versions==/__\
/_\/_\=======================================/_\/_\

The two main things which differ between the four versions are:
1. Content which was changed.
2. Glitches which were found in the game.

============
=i. Content=
============

The content is probably the more interesting of these two categories. Below is
a list of what was changed between the versions, and below that is some
more detailed information on what all of these content changes were exactly,
and reasons as to why they were edited.

V1.0. Version 1.0 has the original Red Blood, the Fire Temple Chant, and the
original Mirror Shield/Block design.

V1.1. Version 1.1 is exactly the same as V1.0 in terms of content; nothing was
changed between these two versions except for glitches.

V1.2. Version 1.2 has the Fire Temple Chant removed, along with the Red Blood
being changed to Green.

GCN. The GCN version is the same as V1.2 in terms of content, besides the fact
that the Mirror Shield/Block design has been changed.

And now, here's a description of what exactly these all are.

=The Red and Green Blood=

What is it?

In V1.0 and V1.1, when fighting Ganondorf, after the battle is over, he coughs
up some red blood. This seems like a normal occurance, because after all, when
blood leaves the body, it IS red.

Why was it removed?

Some extreme people thought of it as too violent for an E-rated game (the
rating given to the game by thte ESRB in North America, meaning "Everyone"),
and thought that if the red blood were to stay, the game's rating should be
changed to "T" (Teen). Nintendo obviously didn't want this, as it would cause a
reduction in sales, so they edited the blood's colour to Green in V1.2 and
onwards. Some people argue that it is more horrible to view someone coughing up
green blood than red blood, because it seems unnatural.

=The Fire Temple Chant=

What is it?

In V1.0 and V1.1, when in the Fire Temple, if you listen to the music, you will
hear Islamic Chanting in the soundtrack. This is infact a line from an Islamic
prayer, looped over and over again so that it sounds like a chant.

Why was it removed?

It was removed from V1.2 and onwards because some members of the Islamic
Community were offended by it being used in the game. The idea of one of their
prayers being used to worship a Firey Dragon God (Volvagia) angered them, and
to avoid conflict, Nintendo edited it to a deeper soundtrack, which sounds
quite similar to that of the Shadow Temple.

=The Mirror Shield Design=

What is it?

In V1.0, V1.1, and V1.2, it is a picture of a Crescent Moon with a Star. This
is very similar to the main symbol associated with Islam. Here's a picture of
the Mirror Shield in its original form:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j177/SwordlessLink/oldmirrorshield.jpg

Why was it changed?

It was changed in the GCN version because some members of the Islamic Community
were offended by it being used in the game, which is understandable, seeing as
how similar it was to the symbol of that religion. Therefore, Nintendo removed
all traces of the symbol, which was on blocks, the shield, and other objects,
and replaced it with this one:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j177/SwordlessLink/newmirrorshield.jpg

==============
=ii. Glitches=
==============

And the glitches which differ between the versions are as follows.

V1.0 - Has every known glitch, obviously including the infamous "swordless"
glitch and the "Steal the Rod" glitch.

V1.1 - Has the original "swordless" glitch and "Steal the Rod" removed.

V1.2 - Is the same as V1.1 in terms of glitches.

GC - Is the same as V1.1 and V1.2 in terms of glitches.

The swordless glitch, which is exclusive to V1.0, is activated in V1.0 through
the following method:

At the final battle with Ganon, after he knocks your sword out of your hands,
pause, save, and reset. When you reload your file, you'll be at the foot of the
tower of the castle with your sword un-equipped. Now, when you get on Epona,
you can use ANY C-Item while on her. A pretty fun glitch.

The "Steal the Rod" glitch, also exclusive to V1.0, can be activated through
the following two methods:

1. As Adult Link, go fishing in the pond in Lake Hylia, and equip the Hover
Boots. Run onto the water, and while hovering, cast the fishing rod. You can
now walk around with the rod cast, and can leave the pond without the man
stopping you.

2. As either Link, go fishing in the pon in Lake Hylia, and while wearing the
Kokiri Boots, run to the back of the area, where you'll see a little stream
with some rocks at the end of it. Climb up one of these rocks, and start
running off of it. Just as he's about to fall off of it, cast the fishing rod.
If all goes well, he'll cast the rod, but fall off of the rock before it casts.
This way, it casts itself when you land, which lets you walk around and leave
with it cast.

*Note* The swordless glitch can also be activated from the "Steal the Rod"
glitch. When you're outside with the rod, simply jump into the water, pause,
and un-pause. You're now swordless.

***How to become Swordless in versions OTHER than V1.0***

Although the Steal the Rod glitch is V1.0 exclusive, another method for
performing the swordless glitch was found, which makes it possible in ANY
version. To do it, follow these steps:

1. Get to the final battle with Ganon, and have him knock your sword away.

2. Perform the Ocarina Items glitch. This is done by emptying a bottle out
which has something in it, like a fish, re-catching it, then doing a backflip,
and while in the air, pressing the C button for the bottle (which must be full,
and in Link's hands) followed by the C button for another item, for example,
the Bow. All of that must be done while you're in the air. This will cause Link
to play the Bow like an Ocarina, so play the Sun's Song. This restarts the
battle, and you now have an un-equipped Master Sword on the pause menu.

3. Perform the Ocairna Items glitch again, but warp away this time, instead of
playing the Sun's Song. Now you're swordless, and saving and resetting won't
change that. The only way to become un-swordless again is to either equip it
from the pause menu, or go fight Ganon and get it back that way.

In case you're still having problems with this glitch, then watch this video of
it, which I made:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxeBPWQrrzQ

So basically, if you don't own V1.0, the only glitch you're missing out on is
Steal the Rod.

  /\=================================================================/\
 /__\===The Minor Differences between the Versions (Text Changes)===/__\
/_\/_\=============================================================/_\/_\

Although there are clear major differences between the versions, there are also
minor, more subtle ones which aren't too easy to notice. These come in the form
of text changes: Some text that a character may say in one version may be
slightly different from what that same character says in another version. Here
are some examples:

===========================
=i. Odd Potion Text Change=
===========================

Some of the text in the game is the same in V1.0 and V1.1, but is different in
every following version. Here are the examples of those.

When you recieve the Odd Potion during the Adult Link trading sequence, the
little bit of extra information which is shown in the text box in V1.2/GCN is
different to the extra information shown in thte text box in V1.0/V1.1. Here's
the text as shown in all the versions:

V1.0/V1.1: "It may be useful for something... Hurry to the Lost Woods!"

V1.2/GCN: "You don't know what's going on between this lady and that guy, but
take it to the Lost Woods!"

As you can see, more information was added in V1.2. This suggests that Nintendo
forgot to include this information in V1.0/V1.1, as what is said in the
Japanese version of the game is closer to what is said in V1.2 than in V1.0.

====================================
=ii. Shooting Mini-Game Text Change=
====================================

In the game, there are two mini-games which, when completed to a satisfactory
level, reward you with an upgraded quiver or Slingshot Seed bag as the prize.
On both of these games, the text which is seen after you win at them is
different between V1.0 and V1.1 onwards.

Here's the text for the Slingshot Bag Upgrade mini-game.

V1.0: "I'll be darned! You are a true master! I will give you an item suitable
for a master."

V1.1: "I'll be darned! You are the ultimate master! I will give you an item
suitable for the master."

As you can see, the word "true" was replaced with "ultimate", and "a master"
was replaced with "the master".

=============================
=iii. Carptenter Text Change=
=============================

After rescuing all four carpenters from the Gerudo's Fortress, they'll go to
fix the broken bridge in Gerudo Valley. If you go into the nearby tent in the
valley and talk to them, what they say is different in the later versions than
in the earlier ones.

V1.0/V1.1: "Now that we're all back together, building a bridge over the valley
was a piece of cake."

V1.2/GCN: "Building a bridge over the valley is a simple task for four
carpenters."

I'm not too sure why they changed that...Personally, I preferred the original
text, but Nintendo obviously didn't.

========================
=iv. Gerudo Text Change=
========================

If you go to the Gerudo Shooting Range while on Epona, and talk to the Gerudo
who lets you play the game there, what she says is different in V1.0/V1.1 to
what it is in V1.2/GCN. This text change is more of an error fixing than a
proper text change, but it's still worth mentioning.

V1.0/V1.1: "Do you want to try again for 20 Rupees?"

V1.2/GCN: "Do you want to try for 20 Rupees?"

The word "again" was removed. This was because in V1.0/V1.1, she said "again"
EVERY time you talked to her, even the first time, when you hadn't played the
game at all before talking to her, which clearly didn't make sense.

==========================
=v. King Zora Text Change=
==========================

After using Blue Fire on the frozen King Zora as an Adult, if you talk to him,
what he says differs between V1.0/V1.1 and V1.2 onwards. Here's the text from
the game:

V1.0/V1.1: "Princess Ruto has gone to the temple of Lake Hylia and has not come
back... I'm so worried... again!"

V1.2/GCN: "Princess Ruto has gone to Lake Hylia and has not come back... I'm so
worried... again!"

It seems that King Zora knew more information about Ruto's whereabouts in the
earlier versions than he did in the later ones. Heheh.

==========================
=vi. Kakariko Text Change=
==========================

Another text change is more of a glitch fixing too, and in fact, no text was
changed in this example, but it's definitely worth mentioning. When you have
become an Adult, but before you've beaten the Shadow Temple, if you talk to
the man in the blue shirt near the entrance to Kakariko Village, you'll notice
that the last part of his speech is shown to be out of place in the message
box. This is only the case in V1.0, and was fixed in V1.1 onwards. Here's what
it looks like in the different versions:

( [_] is the blue/green square which represents the end of a text box)

V1.0:
I saw the ghostly figure of Dampé

the gravekeeper sinking into
his grave. It looked like he was
holding some kin[_]of treasure!

V1.1/V1.2/GCN:
I saw the ghostly figure of Dampé
the gravekeeper sinking into
his grave. It looked like he was
holding some kind of treasure!
               [_]

It's just the fixing of a text glitch, but still an interesting thing to note.

Nintendo, for making this game. Regardless of what version you have, you can
always enjoy this game, as it is one of the greatest ones out there.

jaytheham.com/zc, this is the site where I first learned that the game even HAD
versions, so it's definitely getting a mention. A very good and informative
site from which I learned a lot about this game's glitches. You should check it
out.

Other sites on the internet, whose URLs I don't remember. These basically told
me additional information about glitches and other little points of interest.

You, for reading this guide. I hope you now have a clear understanding of how
each version of this game differs from the others. :)
