No. It is not impossible to beat him with no healing items. It will be more difficult however. If the guy charges at you and you get hit, it can take a good amount of your health away. You need to unload about 4 to 5 rounds of grenade launcher ammo. (I suggest flame rounds). After the proper amount is unloaded into him, some girl (I don't know who it is) will toss you a rocket launcher. Grab it quick, (it takes up 2 spaces so make sure to have that muck space free) aim at Mr X and shoot. it will show a cutscene of clair firing it and it hitting Mr X as well as 2 or 3 instant replays of that moment , before he finally dies by getting his body blown apart.
