"It's that time of month again...time to play Paperboy!"
Introduction:
This game isn't bad considering the limited amount of things you can do with throwing papers. It does not have above average gameplay or graphics, but it is a solid game throughout. Paperboy is more of a novelty game than something that could be played for months straight.
Gameplay: 7/10
I've heard numerous complaints about the lack of variety in Paperboy. What more could people want? The object is to deliver papers and not to go on a full fledged adventure. Doing tricks while throwing papers in mailboxes or at houses can actually be pretty fun for awhile. There are a good amount of obstacles to prevent you from completing your task including moose, raccoons, other vehicles, and rabid chipmunks. Ok there's not rabid chipmunks but that would be sweet if there were. Also adding to the gameplay is the clock which challenges you to beat a certain time. You cannot turn back if you missed a house on your route. This adds to the challenge of completing the course within the time limit and delivering to every house.
Graphics: 3/10
I never thought I would see graphics as bad as these on the N64. First off, the paperboy looks as if he was run over by a truck, then placed on a bike. None of his limbs are connected to his body which just doesn't look right. The animals look unrealistic and move with clunky animations. All the courses have a unique flair to them which creates a fitting atmosphere. Fortunately, Paperboy was centered more on gameplay than on graphics. The experience is not totally ruined just because of a letdown on graphics'.
Sound: 6/10
Each course has its own distinctive tune that will keep you immersed in the gameplay. The animation sounds are decent even though there are only a limited amount. Some sounds can even be addicting. There has been times where I've turned the game on for the sole purpose of hearing the crisp sound of a successfully delivered paper. At the end of the day, however, the sound quality is not all that it could've been.
Story: 10/10
What story can you give a game about delivering papers? Saving the world from total destruction or a giant beast? No, no that is better left for games not including the word paperboy'. This game does the best it can with its restricted possibilities.
Play time/Replay value: 7/10
Paperboy is like Tetris in that it can never get old. You could come back 20 years after its release and still probably have a good time with it. It provides somewhat addicting gameplay that always keeps you coming back for another round.
Final Recommendation: Rent or Buy? .
This game is so cheap right now that it probably costs less than renting it from a major video store. It is always good to have games on your shelf that you can take out and play whenever. I would say rent if you're looking for a game to play for months straight. However if you just need something to play between Zelda or something of the sort, then this game would be your best bet. It's never a bad thing to have an excess of GOOD games.
