WCW/NWO Revenge
Review by TBranford
"One of the best Nintendo 64 games I have ever played!"
Introduction
I will be the first to admit that I am not exactly a huge fan of WCW. Hell, I barely even watch it. The games released on various consoles featuring the WCW name have not been good, either, well unless you count WCW Mayhem. Besides Mayhem, there have been a lot of terrible WCW games released. However, one of these terible games is NOT WCW/nWo Revenge. This is one of my all time favorite games on the Nintendo 64, and although it is not as good as Wrestlemania 2000 (since Wrestlemania is the same game with more of everything, and features WWF wrestlers to boot), it is still a great party game that will be enjoyed by all!
Graphics (6/10)
Yeah, I am giving the game a relatively low score in the graphics department. The reason for this is because there is a lot of polygon tearing and clipping during matches, although it is not nearly as noticable as the problems that plagued its predecessor, WCW/nWo World Tour. Also, there are some minor problems with the character designs, a lot of them really did not look as good as I would have liked them to (and Sting borders on the look of insanity, in my opinion). I am all for hand drawings instead of motion capture character graphics, but please try to make them look a little bit better. Still, the graphics are pretty good, I really did not notice too many problems with them besides the ones I already listed. Overall, the graphics in the game are decent but they do have some problems.
Music and Sound Effects (6/10)
Again, I am not giving a category in this game a great score, yet. This is because I was not really flattered or blown away with the music and sound effects in the game. First off, the music. The music in the game is okay, although it is certainly nothing special. I like the music that plays during some of the matches, although it could have been done a bit better. My main complaint with the music in the game is the fact that each of the wrestlers come out to the same old boring generic theme song. Yes, Goldberg comes out to the same theme song as any other wrestler. Wouldn't it have been cool had the bong hit and Goldberg came out to his classic current theme song? Oh well. Sound effects in the game are okay, although there is no commentary featured during the matches. The only sounds during battle are the sounds of the ref calling ''rope break'' and counting a pin attempt, etc. Overall, the music and sound effects in the game are simply average, nothing more, nothing less.
Gameplay and Control (9/10)
This is where the game really excells, in my opinion. First off, I will get the bad points out of the way. There is no create a wrestler mode in this game, although you do have the option to change a wrestler's name, costume, nickname, etc. I do wish they would have included a create a wrestler mode in the game, however, as the game probably would have gotten a 10 from me had it featured one. Another bad point to the game is the fact that the selection of wrestlers may seem large at first, but you soon realize that a lot of the wrestlers in the game are made up characters. Now, onto the good points. And there are a lot. I like the overall feel of the gameplay and control more than Acclaim's wrestling games, because I feel as if this game makes a better party game than a Warzone or Attitude. Multiplayer is a pretty important part of a wrestling game, so I was happy that this game featured a fun and entertaining multiplayer mode. Also, the season modes are great, I like how you can take any tag team to the tag belts (I made Goldberg look like Sting and took Goldberg and Sting to the tag title belts). Overall, this is a fun single player and fun multiplayer game and features great control.
Replay Value: Medium
This is an outstanding game, and the best WCW game ever made. The replay value depends on whether you like WWF or WCW better, because Wrestlemania 2000 blows this game out of the water (as expected). However, if you are a big fan of WCW, this is the best choice for your gaming needs. Overall, this game has decent replay value, even though Wrestlemania 2000 is better.
Challenge: Medium
This is not a very challenging game for the most part, as I had little problems going through the season mode in some of the easier challenge levels. But once turning the game up to the highest difficulty level, the game became more challenging, as I expected. However, this is mostly a non challenge. Overall, this game is barely average when it comes to challenge.
Overall (9/10)
This is definitely in my top 5 of Nintendo 64 games, and I enjoyed playing it a lot. Wrestlemania 2000 may be better overall, but this is still the best WCW game ever made. This game would have gotten a 10/10 from me had it featured a create a wrestler mode, even if the ''change a wrestler'' mode is fun.
Would TerraBranford buy this game?
Even though I am not a huge WCW fan, I still had a lot of fun playing this game, so yes, I would buy this game.
