Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2
Review by gamer8r
"It may be better than the first Sarge's heroes, but it still leaves a lot to be desired."
I've never been a big fan of 3DO's Army Men games (Big surprise, I don't think this series has anybody who'd call themseves a fan), but for some reason I find myself owning a bunch of 'em. I bought this game on sale with the first Sarge's heroes, and this game is pretty good when you compare the two. Unfortunately, it's not enough of an improvement to make the game good.
Gameplay: 7/10
It's a third-person shooter, nothing really special about it. The missions aren't as pointless and lazily thrown-together as the first game, and I actually managed to get some fun out of this. There far better games on the N64, but if you're looking for a cheap, mildly entertaining game, you've found it. The missions DO get repetitive, but so do most games from this genre.
Control: 5/10
The first SH had the potential to be a good game, but bad controls (as well as rooms that were WAY to dark, and dark in the "I'm gonna hide my lazily done wall textures with darkness" way) dragged the playability WAY down. 3DO fixed some of the control issues, but at times the game still feels slow and unresponsive, especially the targeting.
Music: 6/10
Stereotypical war movie/game stuff, it's forgettable. All the army men music is forgettable.
Storyline: 6/10
The Tan army found a way to stop the Army Men from turning into plastic when they go to the real world, and you've got to stop them. Kind of creative, but VERY short, and I don't see much replay here.
Graphics: 5/10
The graphics are pretty bad, and Sarge still doesn't look enough like a real army man to say that making a game about Army Men wasn't just an excuse to use one color on the character models.
r8ing: It's okay, whether it's good enough to warrant a purchase is up to you.
buy/rent: If you find it for less than $10 and really crave a third-person shooter, go for it. It's not good enough to go looking for.
