Review by Dave 008 Bond
"It would be the most original racing game, if only it didn't copy off Mario Kart so much."
Introduction
Ever played Diddy Kong Racing? Remember how much of a rip off it was of Mario Kart, but you still enjoyed it? Well take a look at this game, because it is the biggest clone of Mario Kart, and a lame one at that. Everything is the same as Mario Kart, except for the tracks and cars, and you can create the car, (Best thing this game has to offer!) Well now I will go into the review, because I don't want to give everything away right now!
Graphics 9.4/10
Wow, these are good graphics, I have to admit. The cars look like they really are made of LEGO's, and the people look like LEGO's too. The racing arenas look even better than the ones on Diddy Kong Racing, and there are plenty of details like signs on the side of the road that make this fun. Overall the graphics are the best part of this game.
Story N/A
It is a racing game, it does not have a story.
Sound 7.2/10
It all sounds good. You can hear very good basic noises such as the engine humming, or someone honking a horn. There are plenty of other good noises too. The music, however, sounds very cheesey. It is so boring, but it won't make you puke or fall asleep. Overall the sound is pretty good.
Gameplay 5/10
Gameplay consists of racing, (DUH!) in a car you created. So before you can race, you must create a car, which is easier than it sounds. Luckily, creating a car is not as frustrating as it may seem. You have a wide variety of parts to choose from, and you can place it anywhere and you can turn the block around. However it takes about ten minutes to learn how to do this, depending on the gamers experience with the Nintendo 64, and after you learn the controls you can create a very attractive car. WARNING: Have a Memory Card when you play this game, because if you don't then your car won't save, so you will have to create it again every time you play! Then there is the races. Picture Mario Kart, only with boring and uneventful races.
Just like in Mario Kart, you have to get items that you can use during mid-race. Overall this game would have gotten a six, but I am starting to become sick of Mario Kart clones so it is now a five.
Control 6/10
It the EXACT SAME THING as Mario Kart. This engine does work good, but couldn't the programmers be a little more original? Mario Kart, Diddy Kong, and Crash Team Racing used this engine, and they were good games, and then the programmers of Lego Racers knew their game would stink if they couldn't do anything to attract the attention of gamers, so they decided to cash in on a popular game's success. This did deserve a nine, but ripping off several games engine is a terrible mistake.
Replay Value 6/10
Just like Mario Kart, it lacks replay value. After you beat it, it goes on the shelf, where it will collect dust. Then you forget there ever was a game called ''Lego Racers''.
Challenge 6/10
It is just a little harder than Mario Kart. I would have liked to see more tracks and a higher difficulty. But it should keep you occupied for about two days.
Buy or Rent?
Rent. It is not good enough to buy, but it is an ideal rental. If you liked Mario Kart than you will think this is ok, and if you hated Mario Kart than you will want to burn this game.
Overall 6/10
