Bomberman Hero
Review by Icy_J
"Hudson has some guts."
So what were their thoughts on this? "Oh, let's make a Bomberman game, but take out the thing that made Bomberman great, but at least keep it presentable."... That's exactly what this game is: not worthless, but not great either.
Story - 6/10
The story is just one of those recycled "save the princess" things. I won't spoil anything, but don't expect anything great. Just go through the worlds, save a princess while a random robot tells you useless info. Kind of like Super Mario Bros.
Graphics - 8/10
My score may seem outrageous, but the graphics were great at the time, maybe even the best for the Nintendo 64 era. Bomberman and his surroundings are nicely detailed and even the enemies have some kind of depth to them. Explosions are really great too, for the time, at least. On a side note, Bomberman's facial expressions are awesome.
Sound - 4/10
Oh god, make it stop. The music in this game gets annoying and you'll hate hearing it loop over and over again. Bomberman's voice doesn't make it any better either, he sounds like a little kid, but he's called Bomber-man- if I remember correctly. But, I guess it's not too bad, kind of like the whole "Megaman sounds like a boy" thing, but that's irrelevant. Also, you'll want to mute the game when you finish a stage, because when you do, Bomberman does this little flip, and says the most mind-leeching phrase his little kid voice could utter... "I did it!" *groan*
Gameplay - 7/10
Believe it or not, the controls are more fluid than you might think, and it's not as bad as Bomberman 64 either. It's fun blowing things up too with all the techniques they added. Though you'll want something more seeing as how there's no advanced movement techniques to be found considering most platforming games at the time.
Replayability - 2/10
No multiplayer in a Bomberman game? Sorry, that's a big minus, and there's so few secrets to be had, so just play it once and sell the game for a buck or two. Really, believe me, you'll love that two dollars more than this... maybe. Hudson really screwed this portion over.
So there you have, a game that's different, but barely decent... like a platforming game where you fly all over the place and don't walk.
My overall score was a 6.5/10, which rounds to 7/10.
