Army Men: Sarge's Heroes
Review by DrDoak2001
"Got plastic?"
Okay, everybody! Ready for a satisfactionally wacky game? Well, here's one to tide you over! Army Men: Sarge's Hero's should satisfy you until somthing bigger comes along. It includes combatibility with the Nintendo 64 expansion pack and the controller memory card. On to the reveiw, my dear friends.
GRAPHICS: 7
The graphics are well done and the polygon size is average. The framerate is what needs the most thorough work, though. Slowdown becomes nastily seldom without the expansion pack which I highly reccomend using during gameplay. Plastic characters are detailed and nicely done. They used animated movements on the characters instead of motion capture. The death scenes on the soldiers can be quite funny sometimes. Try Bar-B-Q'ing the soldiers with a flamethrower and watching them melt in to bubbly goo right before your eyes! There are several levels and a boot-camp training course to explore and each one is very large. There is a rather large ammount of fog in some levels that may throw less attentive gamers off at times. The characters all have a special addition on them that encreases the realism of the graphics. 3DO calls it, 'Plastosheen'. When the character you're using moves the lighting will make his or her plastic coat glisten in the light. Let's move on to sound.
SOUND: 8
Another good side to Sarge's Heroes is that the sound is well done. The best addition is the sound of guns going off. They make a very realistic blast that will entriuge you to bust another cap off. The music is quiet but can be turned up at the menus. There is a limited ammount of tunes in the game to play the game to. Sometimes the same tune will be used twice in the game. There is just a touch of voice action in the game. The voice action is limited to enemy soldiers yelling out in pain when theire hit to your character murmering something like, 'Good to go'. Well, I guess that about covers sound....
PLAY CONTROL: 5
Ouch. The bullets are supposed to make you cringe, not the play control. It takes your character a while to respond to your commands which is very annoying sometimes. When you have to jump off high levels to grab on to something on the other side, your character will most likely not respond to your command if you don't get a good running start to give your player that extra push and you will plunge to your doom below. The up side to the play control is that you can customize to your preference instead of selecting a different mode or having no options at all. Say that you want to fire with the B button instead of the Z button. Well, go to the menus and customize it to your preference then go play the game. On to story.
STORY: 9
This is the best part of the game, here. The story is about two rival sides, the Green(good) and the Tan(bad). The Green's want to live in peace and harmony but the Tan's want to rule over the Green's and dominate the plastic world! You play as a Green soldier named, Sarge, who must fight his way through the Tan menace and save the Green world. The evil leader of the Tan army is a fierce dictator named Plastro. He is kind of a mix between: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein, and Fidell Castro. He wants to crush the peaceful Green's and destroy any sighn of peace (nasty, huh?). Okay, one more thing and that will wrap the reveiw up.
CLOSING STATEMENT:
Well, boys and girls, that wraps it up, I guess. I hope you enjoy Sarge's Heroes and if you are ever stuck on the game, feel free to give me a holler at my e-mail: DrDoak2001@aol.com. See you around!
