Bomberman 64

Review by RHunter

"Fun Multi-Player Game"

Developed by Hudson Soft, the Bomberman series has always been popular. It's been redone so many times it's hard to count - from PC Bomberman to a Saturn NetLink version, The Bomber's seen it all. Now, he's reappearing in an N64 version, complete with the famous multi-player mode and a Mario 64-like Adventure Mode.

The graphics in Bomberman 64 are quite similar to Mario 64 - 3-D environments that can be viewed from any angle, with lots of things to do in them. The enemies and landscapes are quite detailed, but I have one complaint - at some points in the game, no matter what camera angle you look at things with, you just can't see Bomberman because he's under some sort of ledge. Decent cinema scenes compliment the game's story.

The music of Bomberman 64 isn't that bad, but it's not spectacular either. There are song good songs and some bad songs, but none of them are good or bad enough to be too memorable. Maybe next time Hudson could put some voice samples in.

The multi-player mode is definitely a major factor in Bomberman's continued success. Bomberman 64 keeps up the tradition, and adds some really interesting features. The battle mode is incredibly fun, with six unique battle stages to choose from. Also, scattered throughout the worlds of the 'Adventure' mode are parts for Bomberman that you can piece together to make a really neat Bomberman to use in battle mode. For example, there is a 'Knight' set of equipment.

Unless you really don't like puzzle games (if you can call Bomberman a puzzle game) at least give this one a rental. The multi-player mode is pure fun, and the adventure mode, although a bit... frustrating at times, is still a fun experience. Just make sure to have four controllers around :)
