Quest 64
Review by A-Dude
"Quest 64: Great graphics, good sound, but poor gameplay"
I first read about Quest 64 in Nintendo Power. It would be the first RPG for the Nintendo 64. Nintendo Power talked about it like it would be the best RPG to come out for the N64. I thought it would be a very good game. Then, I got it. I liked it, but it wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. Then I saw the review in Nintendo Power. They gave it a 6.3 overall. I was shocked to see that a game they spoke so highly of at first got such a bad rating.
You gotta love the graphics in this game. The animation runs smoothly and the textures are okay, for an N64 game. The characters look good too. The spells are animated well.
The sound is reasonable. The music is not very lively though. The music gets fairly repetative, but I still like it. The footplants get annoying after a while.
However, The gameplay is not very good. Adjusting the camera is quite difficult. If the camera is behind a rock, for example, and you can't see anything, you can move the camera, but when you let go of that button, the camera moves back behind the rock. The are many spells, and I like the way the magic powers are setup (using the 4 elements.) However, battle is very tedious. Battles appear randomly and are turn-based. Personally, I like the live combat in Zelda more. Also, the compass in this game moves depending on which way the camera is angled and doesn't necessarily move depending on which way Brian, the main character, is facing. There are no weapon or armor upgrades in this game. You are stuck with the same wooden staff and the same clothes that don't protect you at all, for the whole game. This game doesn't even have a built in save game feature; you need to buy a controller memory pack.
So in conclusion, this game was a disappointment. I should have bought Banjo-Kazooie.
