Blast Corps
Review by Phange
"Smashing buildings is fun, but only for a while"
I bought this game as one of my first N64 games. The game had quite a lot of play in it, that's for sure. For a patient player the game has lots of rewards. It has a multitude of mini games that are funny as well as fun. I personally like the Pac Man one and the Billiards one. The game aims to please and does a really good job.... if you like this sort of thing. Rare incorporated different styles of gameplay to make this game a treat, and for the most part they did it. The only true downfall of the game is the amount of time you will spend in a level, only to find out you did something wrong and be forced to do the whole thing over again.
The plot is simple. There is a runaway nuclear carrier en route to a safe detonation site. Due to unforseen circumstances, the carrier is now rendered helpless on it's way to the site. This means that no matter what the carrier hits, it's gonna send millions of tons of radiation high into the stratosphere. This is totally unacceptable. That's where the Blast Corps come in. By demolishing things that are in the path of the armageddon truck, you complete objectives in each level. This is easier said than done considering the carrier is moving rather fast and there is no way to slow it down. This gets particularly hard when you play the desert level. You have to go under the tracks on certain parts to clear BOTH sides from the oncoming onslaught. Though this may sound tedious, and at many times it is, the game provides a breath of fresh air with it's myriad of mini games.
Gameplay:
The game plays fast and hits hard. The multitude of vehicles and the mini games make this game a hard one to put down. While it isn't up to Rare's best, it's definetly better than most and I recommend it to anyone who likes destroying things.
Gameplay: 8/10
Sound:
Boy I love the music in this game. Most of the time it's a bouncy Hick-based score. I love it. It just makes you think ''geez the world could be destroyed any minute yet the music is all happy''. It's insane. The voices are good too.
Sound: 8/10
Graphics:
The game has some graphical flair, but compared to the newer N64 games this just doesn't cut it. I want more explosions and BIGGER BOOMS!
Graphics: 6/10
Phange says this game is good. Phange is almost always right. So listen to Phange and go and get this game.
