Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Review by Stargames fanatic
"A great game for anyone, even if they hate star wars"
I am doing a review on Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the N64. I don't know why people hate this game. I think it is one of the best Star Wars games made. Here is my review:
Gameplay 8/10 - This is what makes the game so awesome. There are many types of gameplay. There are ten levels. Six of them first person shooter levels. Four of them you are in a vehicle. The first level is the best, as you are put in a snowspeeder to eliminate the AT-ST's, AT-AT's, and probe droids. One level also puts you in a swoop, and sends you out to ram every swoop into the wall and destroy it before they reach the end and before you crash your own swoop. Every level has different challenges, that's what makes this game so great. There are four difficulty levels: easy, medium, hard, and jedi. The one problem with the gameplay is the controls SUCK! I don't even want to go into that.
Story 9/10 - The story is based off a book, but it doesn't follow it the exact same. It takes place during and after The Empire Strikes Back but before Return of the Jedi. Your Dash Rendar, a skillful pilot who doesn't fight on any side unless they offer him the cash. Fortunatly, the Rebals need all the help they can get, and have the money to pay Dash. Also, Dash is caught up rescuing Luke since there is a big plot to assassinate him. At the end you find out why Dash isn't in Return of the Jedi. The one thing that stinks about the story is no Darth Vader. He is mentioned and has a big role in the back story but they don't even show him once. Oh well, guess they could have done better.
Audio 10/10 - Perfect. Not only did they put real Star Wars music in, but the sound effects rock! It is cool if you listen to the Stormroopers also.
Graphics 9/10 - Pretty good. They could have improved it more I guess, but not much. One annoying thing is the fog though.
Replayability 8/10 - If you beat it on one difficulty setting you can try another, also trying to get all the challenge points in each level is a good reason to replay. Once you do all that though there isn't much to do.
To buy or to rent? - Buy! Rent only if you hate games! But if you like games, (you obviously do or you wouldn't be on this site) buy! If you don't have a Nintendo 64 buy it for the PC. You won't regret it!
