Bio FREAKS
Review by malafoca
"This game is great but..."
In the not-too-distant future, the mighty country known as America has fallen like all great empires throughout history. Its fifty states broken into private territories after what was called...The Techno Industrial Civil Wars. Computer technology, bio-engineering, cybernetics and mechanics accelerated at such an incredible rate, it forced industrial competition to the point of uncontrollable and ruthless espionage...
So starts the history of Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. a cool game that introduces you to the world of Neo-America, where watch how the Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. (which stands out for Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids) battle for territorial purposes. There are three kinds of F.R.E.A.K.S. which are the syntoids that are clones with tissue regrowth abilities, retros which are synthoids that fail after a while so mechanical parts are added to their bodies and dozers that have lost their ability to regenerate and their tissue. The game has a lot of unexplored potential by midway that shows after some time you play it. It has great features but even more missing. I'll go on with specific stuff.
Graphics 10/10
This game has some of the best graphics on the N64. The character models are very impressive, from the spears through zipperheads body to the fire fans that replace the arms of purge it's all eye candy from the start. The arenas are lovable too with fire effects done well and the spinning blades and grinder in bullseye's stage is very impressive. The interaction most of them have is great and there are small and large stages for everybody to choose.
Sound 8/10
It offers great voice acting and sound effects by all the characters, Minateks voice is intimidating and purges voice seems like that of a crazy deranged man. But they are a little too repetitive, although the music is very soutable for the kind of fighting, the hard rock sounds and the industrial techno beats. They sould've added more voice acting and a little more variation with the sounds i.e. give Minatek some metallic sounds when he falls, etc. or give Ssapo some squishy sound when he jumps, etc.
Control 7/10
The control is tough, intolerable for some but if you learn to master a character, it becomes great and you could become invincible with the character you learn to master well, but still it is a very weird way to control a fighting game. Could've been better though.
Gameplay 5/10
The gameplay is where this game starts to crumble. When you first play the game it rocks and you are impressed with the graphics and the ability to chop limbs off but after a while, you just get bored of it because it just is too repetitive.
Overall, the game should've had more details, features, and secrets for it to noticed by the average gamer. Although the character variation was ok, there should've been more characters, more stages, more gameplay modes, more secrets, and the ability to interact with the story which was quite very good.
The game deserves a 6 out of 10.
