Army Men: Sarge's Heroes

Review by Link 7

"A decent shooter"

You play as a one man army named ''Sarge'' out to rescue certain members of the green army during the Green vs Tan war. ....ok so the story kinda sucks, but then again most shooters don't have a good story line.

Graphics
Muddy...blocky... foggy and just flat out ugly! Even with the help of the expansion pack, this game dosen't look much better. every enemy you will see is the same character! with the exception of a few robots here and there. and to make things worse...all the green soldiers are the same model(not counting Sarge or Grimm) during the game you will see alot of green men getting killed, but who cares? since they look exactly like the tan baddies you just wasted. The one character model 3DO used looks like real plastic though. and now for the minor graphical details that I thought were fairly cool. Buildings show damage when hit with a mortar or a bazooka shell, and little plastic shards break off soldiers when they are shot(plus they melt when lit on fire). the trees burn and turn black when blasted with a flame-thrower.

Sound
Turn down the awful music in the option menu! but keep the sound effects as they are good enough, although the weapons sound pretty unrealistic. did I mention that there is little to no voice acting?

Control
I find the control to be pretty easy actually, but the layout is set up so it makes the game alot harder then it has to be. the jumping is inaccurate meaning you'll spend alot of time jumping to get to a high point then missing the last jump only to send you falling to your doom(the kitchen level comes to mind here) you use the B button to select your weapon, which can be a bit anoying since you do end up having a good amount of weapons. there is no way to select any weapon instantly you have to cycle through each weapon...which can prove to be deadly in an intence gun fight.

Control:My score 6.9/10 rounded to fit GameFAQs rating system 7/10

Gameplay
The Tanks and Helicopters sure look like fun to take control of! to bad you...can't poor Sarge can only watch the other soldiers having fun driving Tanks and Helicopters. atleast you get a decent selection of weapons to kill those evil tan guys with. the standard shooter line up of weapons is here, with your basic starting weapon that has infinite ammo to the classic sniper rifle. aiming with the sniper rifle can prove to be hard do to the touchy controls and the loose camera(I'll comment on that later) . The enemy AI seems to be a mixed bag, sometimes you can run into a den of enemys and shoot them all with a shotgun before they even react, on the other hand sometimes you will be sneaking toward an unaware tan soldier only to be shot right in the head by him from 50 yards away(good thing head shots don't = instant kills) No matter how you sneak up on the enemy they always seem to be facing you then shooting you while you try to get out of the crouching stance fast enough. This is a shame since the levels seem to be made with stealth in mind. the stages are devided between portals the best levels being the real world ones, which are set in places like the Kitchen, Bathroom, living room, a sand castle. which are alot of fun, the toys scattered around give you the feel that your really playing with army men. hiding from tan snipers on the couch behind a building block is cool. although too many of these blocks are stacked to say ''3D0'' there is also a multiplayer mode which is fun for awhile(if only they added bots)

Gameplay:My score 7.5/10 rounded to fit GameFAQs rating system 7/10

Final Comments
Even with all it's flaws this game is still a good 3rd person shooter for the 64, the best parts of the game are the sniping and the multiplayer.

Final Rating:my score 6.9/10 rounded to fit GameFAQs rating system 7/10
