Doom 64
Review by peach freak
"Doom keeps getting better and better, doesn't it...."
Introduction
Doom 64 is the first Doom game on the Nintendo 64, but wasn't a port from any other Doom. New enemies, new weapons, and a new new way to go through levels, and they also added some new items in this neat game.
Gameplay: 10/10
This gameplay is fun! I love running around levels blasting enemies, but there are much harder puzzles when some of them took me ages to figure out, and with a few new enemies you never saw in the previous Doom games. You go around through 29 levels (there are 32, but 3 are fun levels), and 3 are secret. Also, if you have an Nintendo 64 Memory Card, you can save when you finish a level, and the game also has level passwords too.
Controls: 10/10
I don't have much to say here, but the controls are easy to work with. If you don't like the controls the way they are, you can set them your way on the options section.
Sound Effects: 9/10
The sound effects are awesome. The sound effects sound real, monsters seeing you. Also, some of the weapons have nice sound effects when you fire, like the BFG (I wish they kept the Plasma Rifle's firing sound effects from PC Doom). The sound of the Shotguns reloading sound realistic too. More of the sound effects are the sound of a dead monster, and much more that made this new out of the plan game great. Also the enemies have a different sound for when some enemies are hunting for you (like an Arachnotron's walking sound), and new enemy encounter sounds. Also, the Cyberdemon makes sounds when he walks, and the closer he gets to you, the louder the sound is, and when I was little, the walking sound effects of a Cyberdemon's metal foot would scare me to death that I'd have Nightmares.
Music: 7/10
The music in this game is OK. I like the music of level 17, and the music with the crying baby in level 13 creeps me out. The music in Level 20 is pretty funny, and Level 8's music is pretty good. Even though there's almost no music in this game, it's still fairly good.
Story
Pretty much the same, but the game takes place in Hell, and all I know that there was a demon invasion in space. At the beginning of the game, you can see your buddies in combat, but when you start the first level, don't expect them to help you since they're all dead. Now it's up to you to slay both strong and weak demons.
Graphics: 10/10
These are much better than all of the other Doom games. Enemies look more realistic, the weapons look a little better, a new design for almost everything, and this game can be compared to other Nintendo 64 games. Even the status bar looks different: there is no mug to show how bad you look, no numbers that show the weapons (Shotgun was 3, etc), they took out the little section that told you how much ammo you had for each weapon and their maximum, but everything else is still the same. Now you can determine Hell Knights and Barons of Hell more easily. The Barons throw red slimeballs, and the Hell Knights throw green slimeballs. Many of the enemies have been redesigned, and a Pain Elemental has 2 mouths now, and it can release 2 Lost Souls instead of one.
Replayability: 7/10
I think it's fun playing this game again, because I never get tired of playing Doom, but you can try a harder skill level, and explore more of the levels. It took me about 4 hours total to beat the game. Now it's about an hour and a half for me, and it should take you my time to beat the game. Also, if you're not going to beat this game in 1 day, then I suggest you get a Nintendo 64 Memory Card so you can Save your files.
Rent or Buy?
Go out and buy this game, you'll love it, even if you never played a first person shooter game. Also, go out and buy the PC Doom games, all 3 PC Doom games are awesome. The PC Doom games, and this are worth your money.
