Doom 64
Review by Never Obsolete
"This game truly blows dead owls."
This is the single most boring FPS game I have ever played on this system or any other. Even the terrible Wolfenstein 3D pales in comparison to this gargantuan pile of tape worm droppings. Please allow me to elaborate...
Game Play
2/10
Sweet mother of all that is pure and sacred, make it stop hurting! That's right, it actually pains me to play this game. Here is an example of nearly every level that Doom 64 has to offer: Walk down poorly lit hallway, notice odd looking brown sprite moving back and forth doing nothing to attack you, shoot odd looking brown sprite, brown sprite then falls over. While you may be thinking to yourself, ''This sounds just like every other FPS that has ever existed!'', you would only be partially correct. Yes, other FPSs involve basically what was stated above, but they usually tend to make this fun. This is where Doom 64 falls flat on it's face. It is boring and annoying to do the same thing over and over again for every level of the game.
Graphics
4/10
Even for an early N64 game these graphics are crap. Why didn't Id build polygonal enemies to fight against instead of 2D sprites that have little more than 4 frames of animation? Especially when it's painfully obvious that all those extra polygons were not used on the levels themselves. Texture quality is poor and repetitive, as is the little to no light in the rooms and billions of corridors. The only good thing that I really can say is that the lack of any detail keeps the frame rate at a blazing fast speed, which is much more than I can say for other N64 shooters such as Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007.
Sound FX/ Music
2/10
Music? We don't need no stinking music! Seriously folks, I can't remember ever hearing a music track or even a crappy little midi play during the entire time I played this game. And sound effects are kept at a bare minimum. It's almost like it was amateur night in the sound studio over at the developer's building. A lack of voice acting isn't missed as there is no dialogue in the game. Well okay, I guess sometimes your little space marine grunts every so often when he gets hurt. But that's about it...
Overall Score
3/10
I'm sorry Id, but I think that you had better stick to making FPS games for the PC. That's where you need to play if you want to see what this company can really do. As for Doom 64? Toss it.
