Mace: The Dark Age
Review by KasketDarkfyre
"Alright, a 3d Fighter based on death"
-Graphics 9/10-
Clean and crisp graphics, and nice looking, interactive backgrounds that fit each respective character nicely. Blood and moves flow off together and pair off in this game like a dream, the clear showing of what an N64 game is capable of when they put their mind to it.
Each character is unique, right down to the costume that they wear, everything from a dancer, to an executioner, and the blades, and weapons they use are realistic to watch in action. Every move is unique to every fighter, and the stances and slight bouncing of the character add realism to this surreal game.
-Sound 9/10-
It's dark and it's moody, and it's perfect for this game. Sound effects, such as the grunts, the clash of a weapon on a defending opponent, to the slashing contact of steel on skin, all come out crystal clear through headphones, and on a stereo system. TV sound systems don't do this game justice, although at times, they are exceptionally loud, and can be a little static-filled. The voices are what makes the moody setting, fit with the dark music, it's a treat to the ears.
-Control 8/10-
A little off-kilter, you'll spend some time figuring the controls out, and how to pull the moves off, but it's nothing that a Tekken or Soul Calibur player can't do. The fatality movements are a little tricky, but it's worth the time to figure out, as are the combos, which can, and will be full of insane damage, however, you can't drop down on your fallen opponent for more damage like Tekken with ground attack moves.
-Gameplay 9/10-
It's a 3d Fighter, not much there, but hey, it's fun. You'll have a hacking good time shattering your opponents ego with a few well timed, and well pulled off moves, including, but not limited to, combos and fatalities. It's a giant when it comes to N64 fighters, and surpasses Mortal Kombat Trilogy and MK4. It's based in a world where the backgrounds are your best friend, and your worst enemy, being able to knock your opponent into something that drains life, gives it a new style of play. Nicely done!
-Overall 9/10-
It's got the makings of a good N64 game for bloodthirsty fighters. Graphics that jump out, easy to learn control, dark and moody sound, music and voice overs that, for once, actually fit a game like this. Gameplay is a little off, because you're hacking and slashing and trying to kill your opponent, same old play, same old game, different ways to do it. It's got a couple of hidden features, in the ways of two hidden fighters, which will keep you playing just to see them.
-Rent or Own: Depends-
If you're looking for a gore-filled fighter, pick this one up for a keeper. If you just want a beat'em up that you can play with your friends for the weekend, then buy all means, just rent it. It all depends on your choice, and your preference.
