Army Men: Sarge's Heroes

"It's okay."

I bought this game recently for the N64 for $13. It's pretty good for about 15 bucks. The one problem is when you're stuck on alecel, there's not much more to do then do the tutorial over and over. I'm only talking about the N64 version here. Not Dreamcast or Playstation.

PLOT: 5/10

There's not much of a plot. There is a war between the Green army and the Tan army. Although they are plastic soilders, their weapons work. You take the roll of Sarge of the Green army, in attempt to take down General Plastro, The evil Tan leader. One morning the Green HQ is attacked and the game starts. You escape with a green colonel, to continue the war. The game is about saving some of your important allies and sticking it to Plastro.

CONTROLS: 5/10

It's okay as the title says. But the controls aren't to good. I mean, the buttons work. Maybe it's just the N64 controller.

GAMEPLAY: 7/10

This is where it get's good. You will encounter many different weapons, enemies, and terrain. The weapons are: M-16, Machine gun, Bazooka, Grenade, Mortor, Sniper Rifle, Flamethrower, Land mine, And mine detector. You will go through man-made terrain, Army bases, and the outdoors. You can't interacte with the enviornment much, though. But there is so much. It's nice.

MUSIC: 3/10

PROBLEM!
There is one song. It's a re-mix of Johny goes marches home again or something. It doesn't happen very often, however. After the song is done, there are about 2 minutes of scilence, then it starts over. Big disapointment.

SOUND: 6/10

It's pretty good. Everything sounds somewhat the same but the sounds are good and realistic. The guns sound good, but the tank is strange.

FUN FACTOR:7/10

I'm not saying it would keep you up playing until 3 A.M., but it will give you something to do if you crave a shooter. It's also a good way to take out your anger, and it's fun to watch your opponets burn after you burn them with the flamethrower.

OVERALL: 6/10
It's worth a bit under $20. Don't buy it if you're really keen on it. As for Buy or rent, If you can rent it, do so to try it. Unfortunatly, N64 games just haven't been in demand and renting them is scarce. I recommend this game to the hardcore Action/Shooter fan. The AI is somewhat stupid and the controls are difficult. But it's fun. I like it, but I digress, it's your average run-off-the-mill 3rd-person shooter. If you have a friend with a copy, see if you can borrow it to try it out for yourself.
