Doom 64
Review by PS2 U 2
"The best one of them all..."
This is best Doom of 'em all. The levels are new, the monsters are pissed, and the marine is here to take em' all out!
Graphics-7
The settings are still in full 3D but the demons aren't.
They still only have 3-5 frames of animation, but it's not easy to notice since you're probably blastin' them all
with the rocket launcher (They explode into bits if hit directly with a rocket. Sometimes...) But the marine's animation is a let down. He doesn't do the cool shotgun reload like he used to in the previous Dooms. The ''hurt'' face is gone too, but I liked that kinda thing, knowing that if you don't want to get painted red, you better find some health and fast! To make it short, the graphics are almost the same as the other Dooms, But more enhanced.
Sound-9
This portion rocks. the sounds of the gunz are digitally better. shotguns sound like they hurt some, the chiangun sounds like constant hot knives through butter. the rocket
launcher..................ouch. Every other weapon can pack
a punch, even the pistol! To the zombie dudes and lost souls, anyway. The demons can growl and stuff now. Each monster have their own foul language. And yes, You can now hear the cyber-demon scream as it is hit in the chest by that trusty rocket launcher. The only thing I don't agree with is that every time the marine is hit, he makes the same ''UUrrggh'' grunt.
Controls-10
Not much to say here, exept that you can cuztomize the mayhem commands to your liking. I for one, NEED the customization. The controls the game came with can get me killed while fighting a darn bulldemon with me toting a double barreled shotgun!
Gameplay-8
You can select up to four difficulties, and trust me, on the hardest difficulty, you'll have to fight a baron of hell
(the red half horse, half demon, all pure hell demon) on the fourth level!! I made it as far as to level 9 on Watch me die! (the hardest difficulty) If you want a fair game,
take on the difficulty ''Bring it on!'' After all, there are about 14 demons to open a can of whup *** on. But, there are not enough more weapons to open that can. About 8 weapons in total (better than the first one; there were only 6). 9 weapons in total, if you count your fists (which can turn deadly if you find the right item) Don't get me wrong, those fists of his pack as much punch as a double
barreled if you find that special black medkit. You know
what I'm talking about... the BERSERK! It can be really handy when your low on ammo and health, as it gives you 100 health and boosts your punch.
Replay value-6
Once you beat it on an easy difficulty,(and if it was too easy) you could always try another difficulty to suit your
trigger finger needs.
Buy or rent? If you just started to play the DOOM series,
rent it. If you've known DOOM for awhile (and know how to survive it), buy it. But this is a good game definitely worth checking out.
