Perfect Dark
Review by Super Slash
"A great First Person Shooter with lots of replay value!"
First of all, let me say that this game is just like Goldeneye. The explosions from the mines and weapons look the exact same. Heck, they even have Goldeneye weapons in this game as unlockables. There are a wide variety of cheat options to unlock, just like Goldeneye.
Story: 6/10
The story...bleh. There is a group thing known as dataDyne. Daniel Carrington sends the agent spy, Joanna Dark, on a mission to rescue Dr. Carrol before dataDyne get a hold to him. Later after Joanna retrieves Dr. Carrol, Daniel is captured by dataDyne, trying to force him to tell them where Carrol is located. Later you discover an alien race known as the Maians, and the Skedar. The Skedar are the bad guys, while the Maians are on Joanna's side. If I tell you too much more of the story, I'd be spoiling the game for you, and we don't want that.
Sound: 9/10
Actually, the sound in this game isn't very bad. The sounds of the Falcon 2 (Unsilenced) are actually pretty cool; it sounds like a pistol shot. The Falcon 2 Silenced sounds like the Silenced PP7 from Goldeneye 007, the Farsight gun sounds like a laser or a ray is shot out of the gun. The explosions sound like that of Goldeneye, as well. The remote/timed/proximity mines also sound a bit weird when they hit the ground. However, when you detonate them, it sounds like you're actually pressing a detonator. Weapons like the Dragon and the K7 Avenger sound actually pretty good, especially since they are rapid fire guns. I'm not sure if this would be considered a sound or not, but this is actually one of the first games that ever had a voice talk during the cutscenes and levels. Not even Goldeneye, of all games, had that.
Graphics: 7/10
To tell you the truth, the graphics are okay, but the characters look like they got their faces taped up or something. The guns actually look pretty decent, as do the mines and such. The levels are designed pretty well, and the buildings and stuff look decent for an N64 game. The levels in Solo Missions, as I said before, are designed pretty well. The Combat Simulator's levels are also pretty neat. They even have a few levels that were from Goldeneye on Multiplayer! Of course, they are designed a bit different, but overall it looks pretty cool. The other characters that fit into the plot well, such as Maian and Skedar, actually look pretty good (better than all those other characters like Joanna). Dr. Carrol dosen't look so bad, either. But they could've made him something more than a computer...There isn't much left to say about the graphics.
Music: 8/10
The music is great, but I've heard much better music in video games. I actually like some of the music in this game, such as the music in Skedar Ruins. Once you get into the music of that level, it really rocks. Though there aren't much moments where this game has great music, that dosen't make this game suck at all. I really enjoy the music in the Combat Simulator levels; they take random soundtracks from the Solo Missions themselves, and sometimes even new ones. An RPG has much better music than this game, but that is only natural when it comes to FPS's. After all, these First Person Shooter's don't require music to be good; RPGs on the other hand, do. As you progress through the game, you will find great music at times along the way (if you share the same opinion as me, of course).
Multiplayer: 10/10
Wow. The multiplayer is amazing in this game. You can play it regardless if you have a friend/brother/sister to play with or not, as there are a wide variety of bots to choose to be in the game with you. There are also lots and lots of levels, including ones from Goldeneye 007 (as I've said before)! You can use any weapon you've found from the Solo Missions, and you can even choose a custom set of weapons. You can customize your character's head and body if you wish, and you can select the characters from the original storyline. This game's multiplayer is even better than Goldeneye's multiplayer, no doubt. If you were not planning on buying/renting this game, I suggest you do, for the sole purpose of multiplayer. Goldeneye does not have all the features in multiplayer that this game has; this changed the way multiplayer was experienced in a First Person Shooter. The levels from Goldeneye are as follows: Temple, Complex, and Facility. For some odd reason, however, the game's Facility is spelled "Fecility". It's really fun going into a level with all weapons set as Remote Mines, and having an explosive war! :P
Gameplay: 10/10
You should know the gameplay of this game; it's just that of a normal First Person Shooter. You pick up a gun/mine/bomb/whatever, shoot it/fire it/whatever, and kill guards and complete your missions. You are an agent spy named Joanna Dark, that Daniel Carrington has sent out. One of the most fun parts about this game is the cheat options it has to offer; you can then go with the All Guns cheat option, and go and blow everyone to bits and pieces with your guns and explosives. Quite fun, I'd say. There are a total of twenty one missions for you to undertake (the last four are bonus missions), and a total of eighteen required missions. There are three different game difficulties: Agent, Special Agent, and Perfect Agent. Each level has one (and sometimes two) cheat options to unlock, and some cheats are even unlocked on Perfect Agent! Of course, to play all the Solo Missions, you need an N64 Expansion Pak (found on eBay, most likely). You can even walk around in the Carrington Institute itself, and do stuff such as Target Practice, etc. Not too much more to cover up about the gameplay.
Replay Value: 10/10
After you beat the Solo Missions, you can go back and beat it on Special Agent, followed by Perfect Agent. Then, after that, you have a Perfect Darkness difficulty in which you can use on any mission to set the health of every enemy, and the accuracy, etc. Then you can go and unlock all of the cheat options, and then you can play multiplayer, and finally...you can speed run for the fastest times possible. Of course, speed running only applies to the Solo Missions. You should be kept busy with this game for at least two or three weeks before you get bored.
Buy or Rent?
Buy it. It's defenitely worth it, and quite possibly better than that of Goldeneye 007. You can find this game on eBay for ONE CENT. Yes, one cent. Factory sealed. Try this game; you will NOT regret it. Trust me, this game is a must try. Defenitely add this game to your collection of Nintendo 64 games. When you get home with it (or when it comes in), pop it in your N64 immediately and begin playing. You will have a blast with this one.
Overall: 10/10
Overall, the story may be lame, but this is one of the greatest FPS's of all time. As I said above, add this game to your collection immediately. You'll be busy with this game for a few weeks, especially with the multiplayer this game has to offer. Buy this game as soon as you can. With that, I give this game an overall score of ten. With my last words, I say: goodbye, folks. I hope you enjoyed this review, and I hope it helped you make a decision on whether or not to buy it. Until next time!
