Quest 64
Review by DannysGetNDown
"One of the most under-rated games of all time."
Quest 64 is one of the most under-rated games of all time. I guess it's an absolutely love it or terribly hate it game. The battle system alone is 1 of a kind and this might be the only game with it (I think Aidyn Chronicles for N64) has the same battle system but is nowhere near as good as this. You wonder the world and don't level up by gaining experience like traditional role playing game's you learn techniques and spells by finding spirits and after you get a spirit you add it to one of your elements to level it up and as they level up you learn more spells. You do get experience however, once you get 100 experience you get a free spirit to add to your elements.
Graphics 10/10
The graphics at the time of it's release were extremely good but compared to PS3/Gamecube it looks horrible now. But it is pretty amazing when you watch, the world is immense and so wonderful to search for spirits hanging about the land. When you enter a town the town is very detailed and it's done so fantastically you won't believe it. The towns are so detailed and yet almost nothing takes place in towns you're almost always in the world fighting. There is I think something like 3 people in this whole game (excluding bosses) that you must talk to. The only reason you go into towns is to heal, save and search for spirits and items in chests, then you leave the town and continue to annihilate the enemies because battles are so fun and then the music just adds to it. I must add that This is the #1 game on my list that I want a sequel for, barely beating out The Lufia Series but I'll stick to talking about this game. Even when attacking and using your magic spells the magic spells look amazing, when casting an ice spell it looks like ice is hitting the enemy same with fire, earth and wind. You'll have to see it for yourself to understand what I mean but it really does look quite great even against the current generation consoles (PS2/Gamecube/Xbox).
Music/Sound 10/10
The music is excellent in this game. every tune is hummable(is that a word?) especially my favorite the field music is cheery and it's so cool to hear the field music and then run around and then enter a battle and the battle music starts instantly, (the battle music is really cool too!) I love it! the sound is good too it's funny to swing your staff and hit an enemy and hear a THUNK! sound.
Storyline 8/10
Okay the story line is not excellent but it is pretty good. With the theft of the "Eletale Book" from the Monastery's crypt. Celtland find history is once again repeating itself and the other "Day of Grief" is quickly approaching. Long ago, this event caused destruction of cities and lives, when people lost the spirits blessings and chaos ensued. When the book was discovered missing, Brian's father, Lord Bartholomy. protector of Melrode and Master Spirit Tamer, left Melrode to find the tome and return it to the monastery. That was over a month ago and no one has heard from him since. Unable to dissuade our young hero from pursuing the whereabouts of his father, the Grand Abbot warns Brian of the "evils" now roaming the lands and advises Brian to begin his journey by adventuring from Melrode to Dondoran. Thus begins Brian's Quest...
Gameplay 10/10
The controls in Quest 64 are easy and you will have them down in maybe a minute after fighting about 2 battles. "A" or "Z" is used to open chests, find spirits, and talk to people. "B" is used to keep the camera behind you. "L" is used on the field to zoom the camera in or out. "R" opens the item menu (which I personally have never used[except in very desperate situations] I just heal and restore magic by walking around, out of battle, to gain magic and use my magic to heal). The start button opens the main menus, where you can change options adn check your stats and experience.
The C Buttons are used for the magic spells.
Right-C: Wind magic.
Left-C: Earth magic.
Down-C: Water magic.
Up-C: Fire magic.
Lets say you have every spell and you want to use a water spell, you hit Down-C to bring up water spell menu, puts 4 spells on the screen 1 on each "C" button and then if you hit the spell button it will bring up a final set of 4 and the next button you hit will automatically cast that spell. but if you want to cast an earlier spell in the list just hit "A" after hitting that "C" button. Sounds hard? Well it's actually really easy and once you memorize where the spells are you can do it really quick.
The battle system is great once you enter a battle depending on your agility the person with the highest agility goes first. On your turn you get a certain amount of moving space, also depending on your agility, and depending on the attack you want to use you choose somewhere to stand and use the attack. If you go to far out you will pass another barrier line and that is how you escape battles, I rarely do, only if I'm desperate and losing the fight.
There is no type of money in this game you can spend the night for free at towns. You don't purchase items everything you have you find in caves and chests and around town, or you can win them from fighting enemies, rare, but you can.
You don't get equipment in this game you just gradually get stronger after numerous battles by taking damage, or dodging attacks and things like that.
Another thing this game doesn't have is a party system. You only use Brian (your main character) through the game by himself. now you may be thinking that fighting a battle with multiple opponents would be tough then. Well let me explain this, if you enter a battle with lets say 4 opponents, it goes in order of agility, except you Get to attack after each enemy. If you have the highest agility you go first, then the enemy with the highest agility, then you again, then the enemy with the 2nd highest agility, then you again and this continues until the battle ends. Unless the enemy surprise attacks you then all of the enemies go once before you get to attack.
Replay Value: Medium-high
For some reason my whole family goes back to play this game again and again even without multi-player in this game there is something addicting. Well since I'm about finished I'm going to go play Quest 64
Overall: 10/10
This is one of the best games of all time. and is also one of the most under-rated games of all time. So you basically have to play this game and see if you like it. you definitely cannot judge this game without playing it first. It is a love it or hate it , no one ever said it was okay it was also love it or hate it. See for yourself.
