II. JAWS IS COMING!
#############################################################################
Everyone has seen the movie Jaws at some point or another (haven't you o_O?)
The movie was sickeningly powerful, and it's become a cult classic that will
probably stand the test of time for... well, forever.

Anyways, it spawned several movie sequels, create an ENTIRE new horror genre:
"Cheaply made sea monster eats people until they blow it up."- it's the American
Godzilla!

Along with all of its movie sequels, it's got a few videogames as well. The
playstation 2 is sporting a sequel, THIRTY YEARS after Jaws's release. Oddly
enough, this game was released in 1987 and was one of the last games ever to be
made for Jaws.

It's a fairly straightforward game that's got only one level, so this guide
won't be an in-depth level by level guide. Instead, it will cover all of the
aspects to the game that you might to know about.

III. CONTROLS
#############################################################################
There are only four buttons and a D-pad. The A-button, the B-button, and the
start and select buttons. Easy enough, isn't it?

For all instances that the D-pad is needed, it does what you'd think- up
moves you up, down moves you down, etc.

World 1 (overhead) controls:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A button, B button- Nothing!
Start button- Pause
Select button- Nothing!
IV. THE MAP
#############################################################################
You're going to be tooting around in your boat through the cove. It's a fairly
small map that's probably about 9 or 10 screens in total.
Here's a picture of it:
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/jaws.gif
As you can see, there are two ports, and those are the most important aspects
for you: your port is your source of life; it is at those two ports that you
will get your upgrades.
As a general rule of thumb, by staying alongside the mainland (green) areas,
you'll come into shallower water. Otherwise, it's deep (deeper the farther you
are from ANYTHING, including rocks.)
That's not a science, but it's close. For example, the inlet where you start
is extraordinarily shallow.
V. THE ENEMIES
#############################################################################
In total, there are three different enemies plus Jaws, which means that there's
really not much to learn about what makes your enemies tick.
 THE JELLYFISH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your most basic enemy, the jellyfish swims upward; that's all there is to him.
It takes one shot from harpoon to take him out.

However, the jellyfish can become the most difficult enemy. As the game
progresses, more and more jellyfish seem to appear, and they get faster. This
means that you'll have several coming up at once, and you have to pay attention
to what they're doing, because it's EASY to get blindsided due to carelessness.

That being said, I wouldn't worry too much. Again, one hit and they die.

  STINGRAYS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your second basic enemy. While jellyfish go from bottom to top, the stingray
goes from left to right and right to left. They travel in a straight line and
therefore aren't much trouble to deal with.
While they do get faster, they just don't seem to be as dangerous as the
jellyfish. Maybe it's because you always see them coming, whereas jellyfish
seem to pop up and smack you before you're aware of them.
Stingrays have two hits as opposed to one, which makes them more difficult
(but if you can't fire off two shots rather than one, there's a problem; there's
NO reload time on your harpoon gun.)
 BABY JAWS
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This isn't a basic enemy; the stingrays and jellyfish are in every level, but
Baby Jaws just pops up periodically. He's unique in that when he leaves the
screen, he comes back for more. He moves across the screen in a constant
movement, but he also follows you up and down. That means that all you have to
do to dodge him is move up and quickly swim under him (as he swims slower than
you... defies normal fish, but hey! It's a game.)

Takes several hits to bring him down, but you're ALWAYS rewarded with a shell.

  JAWS
~~~~~~~~
Of course Jaws is an enemy! Why else would this game be here!
Jaws behaves in the same manner that baby jaws does; swims straight, but moves
up and down. And, like baby jaws, he's just as easy to avoid. He's also got
a critical weakness; if you swim on the very top of the water, he cannot hurt
you, and will just swim by beneath.
Obviously, killing him is your objective, but don't try it until you've gotten
some good harpoon upgrades. Killing him will end world 2 and bring you to world
3.
VI. THE ITEMS
#############################################################################
There aren't many items that you have to worry about in this game, so I'll be
brief. They are either collected by enemies or bought from the ports.
STARS- Stars (not starfish) are your most basic item drop. They give 500, 1000,
       and 2000 points. What determines whether it's one of those three seems
       to be totally random.
       Stars float straight to the bottom and are very easy to collect, but
       they're totally pointless unless you're aiming for a high score.
CRABS- I can only assume we're on the same level here, because generally it's
       fairly difficult to get lice from a dead stingray... SO, we're talking
       about real crabs, like a blue crab!
       Anyhow, it gives 30 points and an energy boost to Mr. Diver. That is, you
       start to swim a little bit faster with each crab that you consume. When
       you die, the effects of the crab wear off.
       Crabs fall and then scuttle off the screen like any typical crab would.
       Be quick or you'll miss it!
CONCH
SHELLS- These beauties are your livelihood in Jaws. Dropped at random by your
        foes, they float to the bottom. They're like Pokemon; you gotta collect
        them all!
        For some reason that is never explained, these shells are incredibly
        valuable. By trading these shells in at a port, you can recieve a radar,
        increased weapon power and extra charges. So, it's a damn good idea to
        get as many of these beauties as you possibly can.
~~~~~~~~~~
Now, the items that can be bought with the conch shell, explained:

RADAR- It speaks for itself, but unfortunately it's not a very good radar. All
       that it really does is beep when Jaws is close. But, here's the thing:
       when Jaws is close, you'll see his fin. Therefore, radar is GREAT if
       you're blind, but if you're blind, why are you playing this video game
       in the first place? I mean, that sounds a little bit silly, because a
       blind man isn't going to last very long... OK, I think I've made my
       point and successfully offended at least one blind person who is somehow
       managing to read this.
       Radar is the first item you buy when visiting the port, and it will set
       you back 5 shells.

UPGRADES- Your diver uses harpoons to kill the fish; this you know. However, you
          apparently aren't the most wealthy diver, because your initial
          harpoons must be wooden, or something- while you can take out little
          jellyfish and rays, against a 20-foot shark you are just no match!
          Hundreds of harpoons have no effect on him whatsoever!
          SO, grab some upgrades! After you've bought the radar, return to the
          first port, and you can upgrade your weapon. Back to port two, and
          upgrade again. Repeat until your harpoon is explosive tip titanium
          (or something like that- it kicks ass.)
          The system of leveling up for your harpoons is as follows:

-First Upgrade:   3 shells
-Second Upgrade:  5 shells
-Third Upgrade:   7 shells
-Fourth Upgrade:  10 shells
-Fifth Upgrade:   15 shells
-Sixth Upgrade:   20 shells
-Seventh Upgrade: 25 shells
-Final Upgrade:   30 shells

CHARGES/
STROBES- For those of you who watched the fourth installment in the Jaws saga,
         it ended in a different manner than the rest; they pulsed charges into
         the water so as to force Jaws to the jump and then impaled him with
         the prow of their boat (just like The Little Mermaid!)
         Well, this game ends that same way, and as was true in the movie, you
         use strobes. Initially, you get 3 strobes with which you kill Jaws.
         However, those few who manage to get to the final upgrade of their
         weapon can buy extra strobes from the port for 10 shells apiece. If you
         truly need it, they're quite handy to have.

VII. GENERAL WALKTHROUGH
#############################################################################
The game of Jaws is broken up into three different worlds. I'm going to cover
how to tackle each world individually.

VIIA. World 1- Overhead
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You start with control of the boat. You trundle along in your boat, looking for
Jaws. Fairly straightforward, really- you can't dock your boat on land and walk
along the land- you must stay in your boat. In the overworld view, not much
can happen. You move from place to place, looking for Jaws, and along the way,
you make pit stops. When I say pit stops, I mean that your boat hits something,
and therefore you must dive down below and investigate. Doing so triggers world
2.
I've never really understood it, because you hit something, and then you must
dive below? Why is that?? Not to mention the fact that when "you've hit
something!" There's NOTHING below the boat... leave it to Nintendo to botch
it up like that.
Due to the fact that deeper water is easier to manage than shallow water, it's
best to stay away from the land and rocks. Your goal while in world 1 is very
simple; use the shells that you collect in world 2 to buy equipment from the two
ports.
If you look at the map provided earlier, it's a fairly direct and very short
route from port to port. So, travel from port to port!
Once you've upgraded your weapon a few times (Three will do it), you'll be
capable of killing Jaws. That means you need a grand total of 20 shells; 5
for the radar and 15 for the three upgrades, as well as to make four trips
across the bay. Pretty simple, no?
Jaws is best found on the surface world. While he can sometimes find you while
you're underwater, it's fairly rare and your best bet is to try and find him
on the surface. Listen for your radar to blip and watch for his fin. When
you're ready to take him on, just charge his fin.
Oh, and by the way- there's also a submarine that you can pick up. While
boating along, you may see the submarine appear on the map somewhere. Sail over
to it to pick it up. The submarine adds another hit to your diver (when you're
hit while in the sub, it goes away until you find it again) as well as giving
him a new attack- rather than firing harpoons, he'll shoot missiles and drop
cannonballs (don't ask and I'll tell no lies.)
 _  _  _
/ \/ \/ \
VIIB. World 2- Underwater
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When something goes FUBAR (****ed Up Beyond All Recognition, for you folks that
have always wondered what it means.), and you somehow manage to run your boat
into something, it's your job to go and investigate, although as I mentioned
earlier, you don't actually hit anything... it's a magical rock that isn't
really there.

ANYways, once this happens, you enter dive-mode. This view is from the side
rather than being from above. You take control of the diver, and it's simply a
matter of surviving until time runs out.

As you've read, you move up, down, left and right, firing harpoons at any enemy
that you see. What enemies, you ask? Why, the stingrays and jellyfish, of
course!

Early on, you'll find that there are few enemies, and they don't move especially
fast. Therefore, the best method of killing them all for maximum profit off
shells is to stay along the bottom and shoot the enemies; stingrays take two
hits, jellyfish one. Each one has a chance of dropping a star for points, a
crab for a boost to speed, or most importantly a conch shell. Don't worry so
much about collecting crabs and stars, but DON'T MISS a conch shell. You need
plenty to finish this game, so take everything you can get.

As you visit the ocean floor more and more, the enemies get faster. This means
that it's best NOT to hug the floor, because a jellyfish can pop up and impale
you VERY quickly if you're not careful. It's best to stay about 5-10 feet above
the bottom and take enemies out that way. You may not get as many shells, but
it's safer- remember, you have ONE hit, so you can't afford to screw up.

On occasion, you'll get a special treat and baby jaws will pay you a visit.
When he does, take his pansy ass down with harpoons. It'll take about a dozen
hits, but he'll drop a shell for you to stash away in that little shell pouch
that's bound to be somewhere in your suit.

If by some chance you DO manage to get hit and die, you will lose the following:

-A life (duh)
-A level of upgrade on your harpoon (apparently God is kind and gives you a
 mediocre weapon instead of stripping you of it all... that, or the game
 designers are being nice.)
-Your radar, which means you need to buy your radar back before you can upgrade
 your weapons again.
-Half of your shells, and in the case of odd numbers, they round up and you lose
 an extra one.
-All strobes that you may have bought. (I hope you didn't buy any, but if you
 did... damn, that bites.)

Oh, and to put salt in the wound, if you damaged jaws, he'll fully heal.

***************
**BONUS STAGE**
***************

Another wonderful treat is the bonus stage. After a certain amount of time, you
will finish the underwater excursion. On occasion, before you return to the
boat, you'll enter the bonus level. In this level, you take control of a plane,
and the jellyfish dance for you! No joke, they dance! They twirl and swirl and
make fools of themselves. But, wait! It gets better! While in control of this
plane, you fly overhead and watch these dancing jellyfish, and you get to drop
BOMBS on them! It's ridiculous, but it's fun, too. You can speed up and slow
down the plane by pressing forward and backward.

Killing Jellyfish will yield bonuses in shells; the more jellyfish you kill,
the more shells you get!

----------------
--KILLING JAWS--
----------------
So, you've been boating around, grabbing shells and upgrading. Maybe you've
even managed to grab the submarine. It's now time to tackle the motherload; it's
time to kill Jaws!

So, first thing is first- it's best to meet Jaws on the surface, because it
gives you more time to kill him. You see, Jaws has tons of health (you may
have already run into him by mistake and been mortified by the fact that you did
almost NO damage, and to top it off he heals himself.) Due to the fact that
he heals whenever you finish an underwater excursion, it's best to get the
maximum possible time allotted to kill the bastard. So, you run into him on
the surface and the battle begins!

First, you will NOT go straight into the water. You will sit on the surface with
your boat and fire cannons at Jaws. Fire, fire, FIRE! until Jaws hits your boat
and you fall in (but don't worry! Your boat is magic, just like everything else
in this god-forsaken game and will be back when the joyful bout is over.)

Now that you've fallen in, it's really easy- shoot away! Remember my earlier
tip- he cannot touch you if you're on the very top of the water. So, head to the
surface, and sit in the middle. As he trundles towards you, fire into his face,
and quickly get to the surface as he goes underneath, and then fire at his
backside. Rinse and repeat, and if you are still having problems, then my only
suggestion is to take a hammer to the game and then to yourself, because any
monkey could do it.

One thing to remember, though- be wary of the jellyfish, as they can catch
you unawares as you focus on Jaws and kill you. How embarassing, no?
 _  _  _
/ \/ \/ \

VIIC. World 3- The Final Bout!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you manage to take his health down to zero (and I shall be severely
disappointed if you are unable to do so), then you will advance to the final
showdown with this big fish.
You'll get a new view where you're "standing" (you can't actually see your
character, but it's implied) on the prow of your boat watching Jaws advance.
He lumbers towards you, coming just so close to your boat... and then veers
away.
Yes, folks- Jaws is now a total pansy, and you CANNOT get hurt in this part of
the game. Totally screwed up and not Jaws-like? Yes. However, that's the
way the game was made... sucks, huh?
SO, what are you supposed to do? Well, those strobes that you've been (not)
saving are now going to serve a purpose. Once Jaws is really close to you, you
fire a strobe. Jaws will leap out of the water and you will then use your boat
to stab Jaws!
Here's the catch- he doesn't move straight, so you have to line your boat up
EXACTLY with him AND make sure he's close to the boat. If he's not lined up
PERFECTLY and not JUST CLOSE ENOUGH, you'll miss. You get 3 strobes, so that's
3 chances. If you muck it up, Jaws regains some health and you have to beat him
underwater again followed by redoing this scene.
Best of luck to you! All I can say is learn to lead the target and watch him
pace a few times to get the hang of where "the zone" is.
VIII. ENDING
#############################################################################
You've done it! Jaws is dead!
Unfortunately, no blood and gore. Jaws just floats down in a non-bloody mass to
the bottom.
After that, you get to watch a rather bizarre thing where a plane flies above?
I don't get it, and I don't think you're supposed to- I'd swear that every
third party game maker for the Nintendo lived on crack, because none of the
games make any sense, but I bet they're hilarious when you're high.
