Version 1.4 - 01 January 2006 - The newest version of this file, with a new
look and updated copyright notice for the
new year. Also made it less of a chucky
format than it had before because it simply
took up too much unnecessary space.

Version 1.3 - 22 August 2005 - Gave the guide a new layout, re-organised
it, and it is now truly definitive.

Version 1.2 - 26 October 2004 - New format while I did a major update to

Version 1.1 - 23 August 2004 - Rewrote the ENTIRE FAQ from scratch. Much
better than it was, and I included new
                                    sections that weren't there before.

Version 1.0 - 22 August 2002 - The first complete version of this FAQ.

Super Mario Bros. is Nintendo's most famous game ever made. It stopped video
games from being put on the shelf altogether, and made Mario a household name.
This is Nintendo's premier NES game and has sold over 40 million copies
worldwide. Its famous formula and its innovation and originality have made it
to be claimed as one of the greatest games ever, and several years after the
original release, shows no signs of slowing down. For any NES owner, this game
is definietly worth playing!

                               2. Game Overview
===============================================================================

For any people who are new to this game (hey, there still are some newcomers to
such a well-known old classic), I strongly urge that you read this section as
it will be of great help so you can understand the game mechanics before you
start. Knowing the basics of any game is important!

(Story obtained from instruction manual)

One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a
tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom
People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants,
and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.

The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return
them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the
Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa
turtle king.

Mario, the hero of this story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People's plight
and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and
restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.

You are Mario! It's up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic
of the Koopa!

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

This little section just describes the characters of the game that have some
kind of significance with the storyline in some way.

The Good Guys
-------------

  Mario
  -----
Mario is the main character of the game i.e. the hero. He made his video game
debut in Donkey Kong but made a breakthrough to a household name with this
game. You will control him in 1 Player mode, or Player 1 controls him in a 2
Player game. He is identified by wearing red overalls, a red cap, and a brown
  shirt.

  Luigi
  -----
Mario's younger, taller and slimmer brother Luigi first appeared in Mario
Bros. in 1983 and has starred in many adventures alongside his big brother
ever since. Luigi looks almost identical to Mario in this game, but he wears
white and green as opposed to Mario's red and brown. Luigi is only seen in 2
Player mode, and his is controlled by Player 2 in this mode. He has identical
  attributes as Mario.

  Princess Toadstool
  ------------------
The lovely princess has the power to reverse the black magic curse created on
the mushroom people by the Koopa tribe, but there's a catch - she has been
kidnapped by Bowser! So it's up to Mario (and Luigi) to venture on this long
quest to rescue her from the eighth castle set up by Bowser. Also known as
  "Peach" in later games.

  Mushroom Retainer
  -----------------
Also referred to as "Toad", these guys are small beings with large mushrooms
on their heads, and they inhabit the Mushroom Kingdom, but along with
Princess Toadstool, seven were kidnapped by Bowser and the Koopa Tribe, and
one hostage Mushroom Retainer is found at the end of seven of the eight
castles in the game and they all give you the same message: "Thank you Mario!
But our princess is in another castle!"

The Bad Guys
------------

  Bowser Decoy
  ------------
These guys look like Bowser, but they are NOT Bowser! They are actually
regular enemies disguised to look like the big Koopa boss himself, guarding
the first seven of the eight castles in the Mushroom Kingdom. When you defeat
one of them via fireballs, their true form will be exposed. They are:

  - World 1: Goomba
  - World 2: Koopa Troopa
  - World 3: Buzzy Beetle
  - World 4: Spiny
  - World 5: Lakitu
  - World 6: Blooper
  - World 7: Hammer Brother

  Bowser, King of the Koopas
  --------------------------
The main villain of the game. This fire-breathing, nine-foot-tall turtle has
battled Mario many times, but this game was their first encounter. Bowser has
kidnapped Princess Toadstool and plans to take over the entire Mushroom
Kingdom. Only Mario and Luigi stand in his path and it's up to you to control
them to defeat him and stop him terrorizing the Mushroom Kingdom!

Beginning Your Game
-------------------
When you insert your cartridge into your NES and switch on the power, you will
be taken to the title screen, and there are two different game modes you can
pick. On the title screen, it looks like this:

                           +-----------------------+
                           | O 1 Player Game |
                           | |
                           | 2 Player Game |
                           +-----------------------+

Press SELECT to choose between a 1 Player Game and a 2 Player Game, and use the
START button to begin. From there, just play the game!

Advancing Through the Game
--------------------------

  Playing Through the Levels
  --------------------------
To advance throughout a level, you must advance to the right. The screen
shifts as you go right, but it will not go left if you try to turn back. You
must also complete a level within a certain amount of time (you may have 300
or 400 seconds in a particular level). To finish a level you have to touch
the flagpole at the end. In every level (apart from the levels in World 8),
if you get past the halfway point and die in that level, you will restart at
the halfway point. Castle levels are beaten once you defeat Bowser by either
frying him with five fireballs or touching the axe at the right end of the
  bridge that he is on.

  The Flagpole
  ------------
The flagpole at the end of each level x-1, x-2 and x-3 (where x represents
any world number) gives you a certain number of points depending on
whereabouts you touch it. Here is a diagrammed guide to the flagpole...

           O

Moves and Attacks
-----------------
In Super Mario Bros., there are various kinds of "moves" you can pull off if
you have a skill. Here is a list of some of the most popular moves that are
used in the game:

- DUCK SLIDE: While running, hold Down on the D-Pad so Mario ducks and he will
slide a ways before stopping. This is really useful for getting
              under small gaps.

- LIP JUMP: When you run and jump you could hit some kind of ledge or a pipe
and instantly jump again to gain even more airtime.

- WRAP-AROUND JUMP: Used often in the coin room with the hook-shaped brick
formation full of coins. You jump off a ledge and then hold
the D-Pad in the direction opposite the way you jumped, and
Mario should swivel in the other direction.

- TRIPLE-STOMP: In some places you can find some enemies such as Goombas
marching in a pack of three. If you jump on one and bounce off
then hit the next one while still airborne you get more points
than usual. A handy little trick to know.

- SHELL-DOZER: Kick a shell and follow it, and it plows down any enemies in its
path. Careful though, because if it rebounds off something and
               hits you, you'll take damage!

- GAP-SKIPPING: If you see a pit or gap of some sort that is one block space
long, run at it at full speed and Mario will actually run over
it instead of falling down. This is vital to know in the later
stages that have a lot of these kind of gaps that need this
technique fully mastered in order to conquer them.

Forms of Mario
--------------
Regular Mario -> Super Mario -> Fiery Mario
       ^ | |
        `--------------'---------------'
                 Mario takes damage

This diagram explains the way Power-ups work. The two different types of
Power-ups you can get are Super Mushrooms and Fire Flowers. Say you start out
as Regular Mario, and you bash a block with a Power-up in it. A Super Mushroom
would pop up. You touch it and become Super Mario, who is twice the size and
can smash bricks with his head. You find another block with a Power-up in while
Super Mario, and a Fire Flower appears. You touch this, and you become Fiery
Mario (same as Super Mario, but can flick fireballs). Should you be damaged by
an enemy attack while Super or Fiery Mario, you will revert back to Regular
Mario. Also, if you are Super Mario and bash a block to make a Fire Flower
appear, take damage to turn back into Regular Mario and THEN touch the Fire
Flower, you will only become Super Mario.

The Second Quest
----------------
When you complete the game once, you are taken back to the title screen, and
you can use the B Button to select a world to start off in. This is exactly the
same as the first quest, only it is a little harder, walking enemies are faster
and all Goombas are replaced by Buzzy Beetles. That's pretty much it for this
mode and explaining the basics overall, so let's move on to the actual game now
shall we?

                                 2.05 - FAQs
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Q: Is it possible to save your game to keep your high score/access the Second
Quest the next time you switch the power on?

A: Sorry, but no. Once you access the Second Quest, you can only play it while
you keep your NES on. Once you switch the power off, the high score will be
   gone.

Q: Is this guide compatible with other remakes of Super Mario Bros.?

A: Yes, you can use it with the SMB game that comes with Super Mario All-Stars,
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and the Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros. for
   the Game Boy Advance.

Q: What's the difference between the first and second quests?

A: The second quest is just generally harder. All Goombas have been replaced by
Buzzy Beetles, and all walking enemies go at a faster speed. Some levels
have more, or different enemies in them.

Q: Did this game spawn a sequel?

A: There was a game called Super Mario Bros. 2 released in Japan in 1986 that
was a harder version of the game. But since it was too tough and the
gameplay engine was almost identical to the original SMB, it was not
released in the US or UK until 1993 when it was included as one of the games
in Super Mario All-Stars. The American and European sequel of Super Mario
Bros. 2 was taken from a game known as Doki Doki Panic, which was changed a
little to look like a Mario game.

Q: How come I can't do the Minus World trick in the SMB game on Super Mario
   All-Stars?

A: Nintendo removed the glitch in that version, so it doesn't work. That and a
   few other glitches as well.

Q: I did the Extra Life trick and after I got loads of 1-Ups, I died and it
went to the Game Over screen! Why?

A: Because of technical difficulties the NES had due to its lack of technology
being an 8-Bit system, it causes you to get Game Over when you get 128
lives. Look in D. Hawkins' FAQ for this game, as he knows all the technical
stuff about it and can explain this a lot better than I can.

Q: Hi, I'm from CheatCC...

A: Go away.

                          3. First Quest Walkthrough
===============================================================================

Now, here we are at the main part of the FAQ - the walkthrough, which will tell
you how to beat the game, step by step. Some minor notes just before we begin:

- This walkthrough is based on the First Quest.
- The Second Quest is basically the same, only with some faster enemies and all
Goombas are replaced by Buzzy Beetles.
- This walkthrough is also compatible with some other remakes of Super Mario
  Bros.:
     * Super Mario All-Stars
     * Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
     * Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros.

Walkthrough

When you start the game, go right as you'd normally do with any 2D Platformer
and you'll come to your first '?' Block of the game, holding a coin, and your
first enemy of the game, none other than a Goomba. So acquire your coin and
jump onto the Goomba's head to take it out. Next, there is a row of three
bricks with two '?' Blocks between them and a '?' Block above it. The '?' Block
on the left has a Super Mushroom in it, and the other two hold coins. Be sure
to acquire the Super Mushroom. After you jump over the next two pipes, there's
a Goomba trapped between the second and third pipes. Fight it if you wish.
Between the third and fourth pipe are two Goombas. Fight or avoid them. You can
enter the fourth pipe, or you can carry on to get a Fire Flower and a 1-Up
Mushroom. If you decide to take the pipe, scroll down to the ***. If you decide
to carry on and get these rewarding items, then by all means keep reading.

The 1-Up Mushroom is approximately halfway between the pipe and the next pit in
the ground. If you stand just about there and jump directly up, you'll uncover
a hidden block and the 1-Up Mushroom will come out of it. Grab it then leap
over the pit and you'll see some platforms with Goombas walking on them. Try
talking the Goombas out by hitting them from underneath, or just avoid them or
stomp on them. The '?' Block here holds a Power-up. After you cross the pit
you'll see two more Goombas. Fight them and then start hitting the brick
directly below the '?' Block, as it is a multi-coin block. Then climb onto it
and hit the '?' Block for a coin. Just to the right of that you'll see two
bricks joined together. Bash the one on the right to find a Starman.

Fight the Koopa Troopa and you'll see four '?' Blocks. The ones nearer to the
ground each have coins in them, while the one higher in the air holds a
Power-up. There are about four more Goombas to fight as you continue to the
right. The next two '?' Blocks (above the two bricks, just before the sets of
little staircases) both have coins in them. Get them if you need to. Now
progress to the right and jump over the next four staircases (watch out for the
pit between the third and fourth one). You'll come to a green pipe.

*** Head right and bash the '?' Block lodged between the bricks to get a coin,
and fight the two Goombas. Then go right and climb the staircase and make a
running leap over to the flagpole to finish this very easy beginner's
    level.

[ WORLD 1-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Little Goomba
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
You see a cool little piece of footage of Mario walking into a pipe, thus
warping into the underground caves, which is where we're going next. When you
start, you drop into the underground and you'll see two siamese-twin Goombas
approaching you, so the first order of business would be fighting them off.
Now, you'll see a row of five '?' Blocks where they were. Bashing the one on
the very left gives you a Power-up, while the other blocks will give you coins.
After nabbing them, head right and start getting past all the posts sticking
out of the ground. Between a couple of the posts you'll notice a trapped Goomba
beneath a brick. Fight off the Goomba and bash the brick (a multi-coin block),
and once you have all the coins, continue right and you'll notice a 'W'-Shaped
formation of bricks with some coins on it. Bash the very left three so you can
jump on it and grab the coins. The very end brick on the right of this 'W' is
actually a block which holds a Starman in it. Grab this!

Now as you approach to the right you'll see a wall of bricks blocking the path
with only a narrow gap to fit through. You can do one of the following: run
forward at full speed and duck so you slide under and come out the other side,
or bash some bricks to make a gap to squeeze through. If you're Regular Mario,
you can simply run underneath the bricks. Fight the Koopa and Goombas next, and
there are four coins on top of a hook-shaped formation of bricks here. Get them
and then continue going to the right. You'll see a load of bricks shaped like
an 'L'. There's a coin inside it. Bash the bricks on the coin's right hand side
to uncover a Fire Flower and then bash the bricks on the left of the coin to
make a gap. Don't bash the brick that the coin is lying on, as you need this as
a stepping stone to reach the fire flower.

To the very right of this, you'll see a 5x2 formation of bricks, that contains
a hidden multi-coin block. I have marked in the diagram where it is:

                                     +-+-+
                                     | | |
                                     +-+-+
                                     | | |
                                     +-+-+
                                     | | |
                                     +-+-+
                                     | |X|
                                     +-+-+
                                     | | | <- Bash this brick in order to reach
                                     +-+-+ the multi-coin block

After that, there is a floating platform just before a pit. Stand on this and
take a running jump over the pit and land on the next floating platform near
the ceiling with six coins on it; collect these coins and stand the end right
hand brick of this platform and jump directly up to uncover a hidden 1-Up
Mushroom in the brick in the ceiling directly above you. Quickly bash a brick
to the right of it so it falls down and you can collect it before advancing
forward.

Fight the three Goombas that approach you and you'll come to a set of three
pipes, each with Piranha Plants sticking their heads out every once in a while.
You can enter the pipe on the left to go to a secret Coin Room (which I advise
you do). After you leave the coin room, you'll come out of the pipe on the
right. Next, you'll come to a pit with a pillar of bricks sticking out of the
middle. Cross this with care. Next you'll see a staircase with two Goombas
descending it. Fight or avoid these Goombas and at the top of the staircase
you'll notice some descending girder-elevators. Use these to cross to a brick
platform to the right. Fight off the Koopa below, and stand under the brick on
the very right end of the floating platform and jump up to find a Power-up
inside this brick. To the right of here are some girders going up. From here,
you have the choice of one of the two following routes to take using these
girders:

1. Use them to get across the gap to enter the exit pipe to finish the level
   normally.

2. Use them to get onto the row of bricks on the ceiling to go right and drop
down into Warp Zone to warp to World 2, World 3 or World 4. The Warp Zone
secret is explained in more detail in the Cheats and Secrets section of this
FAQ. Scroll down to the appropriate World Number in the walkthrough to carry
on (depending to which level you warp to, of course).

Also, by the exit pipe, you will have the ability to perform the 'Minus World'
trick if you are Super or Fiery Mario. This is also covered in the Cheats and
Secrets section.

If you decide to complete the level normally, then take the girder and enter
the exit pipe. You'll emerge out of a warp pipe in the overworld. Climb the
staircase to your right and make the jump over the gap to hit the flagpole and
thus finish the level.

[ WORLD 1-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Little Goomba
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
The swinging trees level. The basic gist of these kind of levels is to cross
the trees without falling to reach the end. From the start, go right, jump onto
the first tree and then onto the second - you'll see a platform with three
coins and a Koopa Troopa on - fight the Koopa and get the coins. The next tree
has a sole coin on it. Remember to try to get all the coins in order to be able
to find the secret 1-Up Mushroom in World 2-1. There are two coins in the air
above the next tree, and watch out for the Goombas that approach from the tree
to the right of that one. From that tree that the Goombas were on, jump down to
the next tree close to the ground and try to get the two coins in the air as
you drop.

The trees to the right have a set of four coins and a '?' Block with a Power-up
in it. Get the Power-up if necessary and use the girder to the left of these
trees to reach the higher one. There is a pit with a Koopa Paratroopa flying
above it after the next two trees and some Goombas dropping down from the tree
to the right of it. You can try hitting the Goombas with a fireball as they
fall =P. If you are Fiery Mario, fry the Koopa Paratroopa to safely get across
the pit, or just jump clear when it's safe. After the next tree there's a huge
gorge which you need to cross using horiztonally-moving girders. Grab the coins
in the air as you do so if you can. Jump from the next tree to the next and
fight the Koopa Troopa. Next, you'll find a Koopa Paratroopa guarding some
coins; try to fight this Koopa using fireballs if you're Fiery Mario, if not,
just drop down to get the coins when it's clearly out of the way.

Jump over the pit between the last two trees and get the remaining two coins.
You'll find a girder going horizontally that takes you to the (steep) staircase
or you can walk across the ground to get to (fight the Koopa if you do so). And
from there, it's the simple case of leaping over to the flagpole and completing
the level!

[ WORLD 1-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Goomba)

Walkthrough
-----------
You start on a little flight of stairs. Descend them and head right and jump
over the first lava pit. When you come into the open you'll see a little pillar
sticking out of another lava pit that has a Firerod attached to it and a '?'
Block above it. Time your jumps, and if you need a Power-up, hit that block to
get it, and finish jumping over the pit to get into another tunnel. Run through
it and look out for the three Firerods there, so time your running carefully.

In the next area in the open, you need to get past three separate Firerods that
are attached to both the ceiling and the floor, so try to keep precise with
your running and jumping. Next, you'll come to a giant pit in the floor that
has six hidden blocks containing coins in them. Watch out for Bowser's flames
shooting towards you while you try to uncover them. Here is a diagram of where
to find these hidden blocks:

                      +---+ +---+ +---+
                      | | | | | |
                      +---+ +---+ +---+

                 +---+ +---+ +---+
                 | | | | | |
-----. +---+ +---+ +---+ .----------.
     | | |
     | | |
     | | |
     | | |
     '---------------------------------------------------------' '----

Next, you will come to the bridge with Bowser on. Either fry him with some
fireballs or grab the axe either by running under him or using the girder near
the ceiling and drop down to grab it. Thus endeth World 1, but you'll just meet
the Mushroom Retainer who gives you the message "Thank you Mario! But our
princess is in another castle!" Looks like we'll have to continue looking.

[ WORLD 2-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Little Goomba
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
Go right and you'll come to a brick platform that is three brick blocks wide.
Hit the middle brick to find a Power-up. To the right of that, you'll see a
staircase with a Goomba going down it. Fight this Goomba and get over the
staircase and into the little pit. There are two Koopa Troopas in here which
you should fight with fireballs (kick a shell and you'll regret it), and above
you is a floating brick platform. Stand one block space to the left and
underneath the platform and jump up to find a hidden coin block. Stand on this
and jump directly up to find an invisible block with a 1-Up Mushroom (this only
appears if you got all the coins in World 1-3). Grab it and move on.

Between the pillar and the next pipe are two Goombas that you can fight off or
avoid, then jump over this pipe (watch out for the Piranha Plant in it). You'll
come to a set of '?' Blocks shaped like an equals sign. All of them hold coins,
apart from the bottom left coin, which has a Power-up in it. Be sure to watch
out for the Goombas and Koopa Troopas patrolling this area. Next you'll see a
brick block below a platform of bricks just to the left of a pipe. Stand on the
brick and bash the brick on the very left of the platform to find a Starman!

Jump over the pipe. Next you'll see seven '?' Blocks below a long brick
platform. At this place, this is your first opportunity to go to "Coin Heaven".
The '?' Blocks all hold coins and one of the bricks has a vine in it. You need
to stand on one of the rows of '?' Blocks and hit the middle brick in the
platform to uncover the vine. Jump onto it and climb up to go to Coin Heaven
(more is explained about Coin Heaven in the Cheats and Secrets section). If you
take the Coin Heaven, scroll down to the *** once you finish in that area. If
you wish to carry on, then keep on reading.

Jump over onto the next brick platform to your right and use this to cross the
pit below you. Jump down onto the next bit of land and fight the Goomba and
jump onto the pipe when the Piranha Plant goes back inside. From there, make a
jump over the pit and get past the pipes with the Goombas around them. Above
three of the pipes you'll see a platform made of four bricks. Hit the very left
brick find a Power-up, which you should get if you need to. After the pipes,
jump over the pit, fight the Koopa Paratroopa and make the jump over the next
pit and the pillar of blocks. Fight the Goombas and Koopa Paratroopas and start
hitting the sole brick (multi-coin block) until you get all the coins.

*** The next '?' Block has a coin in it. The brick above and to the right of it
holds a Power-up in it. You can just about reach this with a running jump.
Get over the next pipe with the Piranha Plant in and fight the Koopa Troopa
in the next area. You'll come to a huge block wall with a trampoline beside
it. Can you guess what happens next? =) Yeah, well you can do that or you
can stand on the bricks just to the left of the trampoline and jump up to
find a hidden block, which you can also use as a stepping stone to get onto
the wall and then make a running leap over to the flagpole and finish the
    level.

[ WORLD 2-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Cheep-Cheep
- Blooper

Walkthrough
-----------
You see a little cutscene of Mario going into the pipe again, and entering the
first underwater level of the game. Being Fiery Mario helps here, as fireballs
are the only way you can beat the enemies underwater.

When you drop into the water, start swimming right, and the first two coins of
the level are on the ground just to the right of some seaweed. Swim right and
fight the Blooper that approaches. Next are three coins near the surface. Get
them if you want. Past some more seaweed are three more coins on the ground,
and a Blooper nearby, followed by another as you swim along. A little further
to the right, you'll find a bracketed pit with three coins in it. When you try
to get the coins, remember to keep pressing A repeatedly, because pits have an
invisible sort of suction that drags you in, so make sure to keep yourself up
or you'll get dragged in and lose a life!

A horde of Bloopers and Cheep-Cheeps follow next. Swim around them or try to
fight them with fireballs if you can. There are three coins at the bottom
beneath a platform, and the next three coins are on a platform halfway to the
surface just to the right of this. After you swim past some more seaweed,
you'll approach another pit with five coins near the bottom. Remember to swim
as fast as you can to avoid being pulled in by the suction, and get past here,
collecting the coins if you can.

When you swim past some more Cheep-Cheeps and a couple of bits of seaweed, you
will come to another bracketed pit with a narrow gap at the top which you can
use to drop in and get the six coins. Once you have them and get out, continue
swimming right, past four platforms and some Cheep-Cheeps and you'll come to a
pipe in the wall. Enter this to exit the water area. You emerge in the
overworld area again, so climb the staircase and leap over to the flagpole and
finish the level.

[ WORLD 2-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Cheep-Cheep

Walkthrough
-----------
This is the first bridge level, and what you must constantly do is to keep an
eye out for the Cheep-Cheeps that annoyingly fly up to try to hit you. What I
suggest you do when you set foot on the bridge is RUN. Also remember, that
since this level is a World x-3 level, you should try to grab all the coins in
order to be able to find the hidden 1-Up Mushroom in World 3-1.

Starting from the beginning of the bridge, go right a while and as the
Cheep-Cheeps begin popping up, you'll see four coins in the air. A little
further to the right you'll see five coins in the shape of a 'W'. Get these and
then continue going to the right as usual. Make a leap over the pit and collect
the four coins at the start of the next section of bridge. Go right and make
another leap over a pit and grab the coins as you land on the next, rather
short bridge. The '?' Block you see here holds a Power-up.

Next you'll see a bit of ground low to your right. Make a running jump to it,
and try to grab the three coins in the air while you do so, then jump up to the
little floating segment of bridge to the right, then onto the bridge next.
There is a row of six coins to get in the air, then jump over another pit onto
another section of bridge. Get the four coins on this one and keep running to
the right to jump onto the next part of the bridge. After this you'll see some
segments of bridge separated with six coins above them. Carefully jump over
these and do your best to get the coins, then finally get onto the last part of
the bridge, go down the staircase at the end of it and you'll be on land again.
Jump over a final pit, climb the staircase and as usual, jump over to the
flagpole to enter the castle.

[ WORLD 2-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Koopa Troopa)

Walkthrough
-----------
Go down the stairs, run right, and in the open you'll see a huge lava pit at
the bottom of the screen with Podoboos jumping out. Hmmm. First, jump onto the
little platform, then over to the platform to the right of this one with the
'?' Block above it, which holds a Power-up for you to snag. Then finish
crossing the pit using the little platform to your right, and be sure to watch
out for another Podoboo occassionally jumping out.

In the next part of the castle, the tunnel is divided up by a long platform
that has some Firerods spinning around on it. Taking either the top path or the
bottom path, carefully walk to the right and avoid the three or four Firerods.
At the end of the tunnel you need to get past another Firerod above where the
ledge rises, then you have to cross the pit using some girders on wires going
up and down. Also beware that Bowser's flames start appearing here. Make
another jump over to the next platform (and watch out for the Firerod on this
as well). When you drop into the little pit you'll see an empty block
surrounded by six coins. Grab these if you must.

Next, jump over the little lava pits using the pillars sticking out of the
ground and get past the two little trenches (ideal to stay in if you plan to
fight Bowser with fireballs). As you'll know, Bowser is to the right of here,
on the bridge. So simply use fireballs or grab the axe to beat him, and you'll
finish the level by seeing another Mushroom Retainer giving you the same
message you saw as the one in the first castle. Looks like the princess isn't
here and we'll still have to advance.

[ WORLD 3-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Little Goomba
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Hammer Bros.

Walkthrough
-----------
Go right and you'll come to three '?' Blocks. The ones on the left and centre
have coins in them, and the one on the right has a Power-up in it for you to
get. Look out for the bouncing Koopa Paratroopas here, it is better to try to
avoid them or to fry them with fireballs if you can. Next you'll see a brick
platform then two pipes with a Goomba trapped between them. Fight the Goomba if
you have the desire to do so, and you can go down the pipe on the right if you
want to do so. Scroll down to the *** if you do take this pipe.

Jump over the pit and fight the three Goombas next that come on the other side.
Next are two pipes with a Koopa Troopa trapped between them, and a brick that
has been placed there for no apparent reason. Get past these pipes.

*** Go right and climb up the little staircase onto the bridge. Fight the three
Goombas you meet here, and stand about a quarter away from the right end of
the bridge and jump up to uncover a hidden block with a 1-Up Mushroom in it
(it will only be there if you got all the coins in World 2-3 or warped)
here and grab it before it falls in the water. Jump over the little pit
    into the next area.

Above the load of blocks is a platform of three bricks. If you're Super or
Fiery Mario, you can just about reach the left hand brick to find a Starman,
which you can use to take out the Goombas and Koopa Troopa on the ground. Get
past the next pipe and you will encounter the annoying Hammer Brothers on two
ledges next, for the first time in the game. If you are still invincible, you
can easily take them out. If you are Fiery Mario, use fireballs to fry them. If
Super or Regular Mario you can try bumping them from below, or just simply
avoiding them and running. Also, the '?' Blocks on the top ledge that they are
occupying hold a coin and Power-up.

Next, you'll come to a trampoline. Ignore this for now and make a running jump
to land between the two brick platforms. Bash the brick on the very right to
find a vine that will lead to Coin Heaven. If you are Super/Fiery Mario, bash
the other bricks to be able to reach it, or if you are Regular Mario, use the
trampoline to reach it and to climb into Coin Heaven. If you take the vine,
scroll down to the ### when you finish the Coin Heaven. If you just carry on
ignoring the vine, read on as usual.

Leap over the pit and you'll then come to four '?' Blocks lodged between bricks
and a horde of Koopas and Goombas around. Fight these off so you can get to the
job of bashing the blocks. All of them contain coins, apart from the
bottom-right-hand one, which has a Power-up. Once you're done with all the
block-bashing, carry on right to fight a Koopa Troopa pack. Take them out if
you must.

### Next you will find a platform of bricks. The second one from the left is a
multi-coin block. Get the coins and continue heading right and jump over
the pillar of blocks and the gap following it and you'll find the
end-of-level staircase with two Koopa Troopas descending it. Note, you can
perform the Extra Lives cheat here (more info is described in the Cheats,
Codes & Secrets section). And after that, it's the simple case of leaping
from the top to the flagpole and advancing to the next level.

[ WORLD 3-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Little Goomba

Walkthrough
-----------
Go right, stomp on the Koopa Troopa and kick its shell to the right so that it
starts to hit several enemies and racks up several points! Careful though,
because it will eventually hit a stump and come back, so jump or it will hit
you! After the stump, get the three coins in the air then stand on the block
pillar and bash the '?' Block above it to gain a Power-up. Next, fight the
Koopa and three Goombas and you'll then see a Koopa trapped between two short
little block pillars with two separate bricks above it. The top has a Starman
in it, the bottom is a multi-coin block. If you are Fiery Mario, fry the Koopa,
bash the multi-coin block and then get the Starman and proceed. If you are any
other form of Mario, get the Starman first, take out the Koopa using your
invincibility and hit the multi-coin block.

Jump across the pit and run right, fighting a Koopa Paratroopa, a Koopa Troopa
and three Goombas before jumping over a pit onto a small island with a little
block pillar on it and a brick above that. Get past this and jump over another
pit and continue progressing to the right to fight some more Koopas (kick the
first ones shell for the Shell-Dozer) and along the way you'll spot a pipe with
four coins above it. Watch out for the Piranha Plant and get these coins if you
can. You then need to get past a Koopa Troopa and two packs of three Goombas
before you reach the staircase, then jump over to the flagpole and finish the
level.

[ WORLD 3-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Little Goomba
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
Another tree level to do, yay. Start by going right, jump into the first tree,
and fight the Goomba in the second (or let it walk off and plummet to its
death...hahahahaha). Next you'll see two girders moving left and right in the
air. Below them is a tree low to the bottom of the screen with a couple of
coins on it. Get these. Jump over into the next set of trees and get the four
coins in the air. Next are some more trees with Koopas on them. The '?' Block
above the highest one holds a Power-up in it. There are three coins below and
to the right of that, and on the tree to the right are two coins.

You'll see a pit with a floating girder above it next. When you step on this
girder it will fall while you are on it, so quickly use it to cross into the
next set of trees. There are four slim trees each with a coin on to grab, and
a Koopa below that you can simply ignore.

Next, use the balance-elevator to advance along and grab the coins on the
girders. Remember that if you make one side of the balance-elevator go too far
down the girders will snap off them and fall. You'll receive 1000 points for
this daring feat, though. Anyway, continuing on, use the nearby floating
girders floating horizontally to cross the pit with the little tree sticking
out of it. From this tree, you can use the girder next to it to cross to the
next set of trees and get the coins scattered around on them.

There is a Red Koopa Paratroopa hovering over the next pit, so either jump over
it or fry it with a fireball if you're Fiery Mario, then jump. Any way you
choose, next are two Koopas to fight on the broad tree after that, then hop
onto the horizontally-moving girder at the end, and from that, jump onto the
balance-elevator to the right, and use this to jump over to the flagpole.
That's right, no staircase. Try to get the right-hand girder high and then
quickly jump onto it and make a running jump to hit the flagpole and finish the
level to enter castle number three.

[ WORLD 3-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Buzzy Beetle)

Walkthrough
-----------
Go down the staircase as usual, and go right. Leap over the first lava pit when
the Podoboo isn't jumping out, and time it when the Firerod isn't going to
touch you when you land. Jump over another three lava pits in the same fashion,
just looking out for Firerods and Podoboos until you reach the next area. You
will find three '?' Blocks just before a lava pit; the left and right-hand
blocks hold coins in them, and the middle one has a Power-up to get. Get over
the lava pit and you're confronted with a gap to jump through with two Firerods
on the ceiling and ground. Time your jump carefully when the Firerods are
safely facing away, and do the same with the next gap with Firerods to get
through to the next area of the castle.

Next you'll see another set of these Firerods securing a gap, only these ones
rotate in opposite directions to the ones you saw just before. There are three
coins you can dare to grab next to the top Firerod as you jump through. Next,
jump over the lava pit, looking out for the Podoboo that occassionally pops out
of it into the tunnel. Bowser's flames start appearing here, so be careful.
Cross some more lava pits, avoiding the Podoboos as usual, and in the last
tunnel, jump over the little pit and you'll come to the bridge with Bowser. Use
five fireballs or grab the axe to cook his goose, and you will go forward to
find another Mushroom Retainer with the SAME message AGAIN! The whole "Thank
You Mario!" crap. Looks like we'll still have to be looking around a little
while longer.

[ WORLD 4-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Lakitu
- Spiny

Walkthrough
-----------
As you go right you will approach a pipe, and Lakitu will appear around this
area and follow you to the end dropping Spinys (unless you can take him out
temporarily). There are two '?' Blocks after the first pipe. The bottom one has
a Power-up in it and the top one has a coin. Once you've got them, go right,
leap over the pit and get the four coins you see in the air. Keep going right
right a while, and you will see four '?' Blocks spaced about like a square.
Each of them has a coin. Get them if you want, but if you're just aiming to get
past Lakitu, then just run past them. You could stand on top of one of the two
top blocks and hit Lakitu from here.

As you go right, leap over a fairly big pit and you'll see four '?' Blocks in a
row. Bash them for coins, then stand on ther third one from the left and jump
directly up to get a hidden 1-Up Mushroom (this will only be there if you got
all the coins in World 3-3). As you go right, get a running jump onto the small
illar of blocks and with the momentum, jump to get four coins in the air. Next,
you will come to a pipe. Do the same to get the four coins in the air to the
right of that. You can go down the next pipe that you come to (if you do,
scroll down to the ***. If not, carry on reading as usual).

Jump off the pipe to the right and grab the four coins in the air. You'll then
see a cluster of bricks and '?' Blocks. All of the '?' Blocks have coins,
except the third from the left on the bottom row, which has a Power-up in it.
Use the little platform to cross the gap and carry on heading to the right. You
should then come to a green pipe.

*** Advance right and jump over the pits using the little patch of land
in-between as a stepping-stone. Next, jump over the pillar of blocks and
the pit that follows after it. As you go right, you'll come to the
staircase and Lakitu will stop stalking you. Climb up the staircase, but
instead of making the leap over to the flapole, drop down to the ground and
bash the brick (multi-coin block) to get all the coins inside it, then
standing against the staircase, make a little running jump onto the block,
and with the momentum, make another jump to reach the flagpole. It's quite
easy to get 5000 points doing this once you know what to do.

[ WORLD 4-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Little Goomba

Walkthrough
-----------
When you drop in, you'll instantly see to your right a large pit with two
little islands that you need to use to make a long jump to cross over the pit
and it can be a little bit tricky if you're not quite used to it. What you need
to do is to start running, make a little hop onto the island that is closest to
you, then with the momentum make a LONG jump over the rest of the pit and you
should come crashing into a big formation of bricks.

Collect the three coins in the little isolated gap after the first formation of
bricks, and bash the brick that stick out to get a Power-up. Now jump onto the
next formation of bricks and travel through the tunnel and you'll encounter
three Goombas to fight (being Fiery Mario helps a lot, but you'll need to be
more careful with stomps). Also, you can find a secret multi-coin block within
the bricks in the ceiling before the tunnel opens. Count the amount of block
spaces to move along (and in this diagram I have marked the precise location of
where it is).

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+--------------------

Once you uncover it (you'll need to be Super or Fiery Mario in order to bash
the bricks below to find it by the way) head out into the open and you'll see
some scattered '?' Blocks. The ones on the left all have coins in them, and the
one in the middle of the set of three has a Power-up inside it, as the diagram
implies. Get them, then cross the pit, using the falling girders to safely get
across. Note that in this next area you can access the Warp Zone trick to get
to Worlds 6, 7, and 8. Look in the Cheats and Secrets section to find out how
to do so. If you do decide to take the Warp Zone, scroll down to the beginning
of the world that you warp to if you take it. If not, just carry on reading.

Go right and get past the pipe when the Piranha Plant isn't sticking out of it.
Fry the Koopa Troopa trapped between this pipe and the next if you're Fiery
Mario, and bash the brick closest to the pipe to find a multi-coin block. Jump
over the next pipe and you'll see a Buzzy Beetle trapped between this pipe and
the next one. Try to stomp it but don't kick the shell (you will sorely regret
doing it if you do so). The brick that's further from the taller pipe has a
secret Starman in it to grab. You can enter the next pipe to find a coin room.
If you do, you will be warped out again in a pipe very nearby that is only
separated by a few pipes and bricks, and a pit. Also, if you use the rising
girders you find along the way to jump onto the ceiling, you can advance right
to find the Warp Zone if you stay on the ceiling and go right (this one leads
you to World 5). Check out the Cheats and Secrets section if you do, and scroll
down to the start of World 5 if you do take it.

You'll see three pipes. Get past them, being careful to look out for the
Piranha Plants inside them and jump over the little pit following them. On the
next bit of ground you'll find a staircase with a Buzzy Beetle going down them.
Fight or avoid this Buzzy Beetle then climb the stairs can make the jump over
the pit (using the falling girders to get across easier), and on the next part
you'll see a long row of bricks with some coins on them and some Koopas to your
right. Bash the brick of this long platform on the very left to find a Power-up
to get and run across the platform getting the coins if you want to. Go up the
staircase and jump onto the pipe to its right when the Piranha Plant isn't
peeking out and drop down to the ledge on the right and enter the exit pipe.
You'll emerge back in the overworld, so climb the staircase and jump over to
the flagpole and finish the level.

[ WORLD 4-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa

Walkthrough
-----------
Another of those levels where you cross from a tree to another, only here, you
do it with mushrooms. Start by going right to jump onto the first mushroom then
make a leap to the right to another mushroom with two Koopas to fight and five
coins to collect on it. Get the coins on the mushroom to the left of that as
well. Make a running leap to the next mushroom and you'll spot a Koopa
Paratroopa flying beside you. On the lower mushroom to the right is another
Koopa with some coins to grab. The '?' Block above the higher mushroom next to
the Koopa Paratroopa has a Power-up in it. Get this if you can.

Next you'll see a balance-elevator. Try to get the coins by balancing it out
carefully then jump across the large pit next by using the other floating
girders that are nearby. Next you'll find some more mushrooms with coins
scattered around on them and a couple of Koopas. Get the coins and use the next
three sets of balance elevators to the right to carry on to get to a mushroom
with five coins on it to collect. Finish hopping over all the other mushrooms
until you come to a girder moving up and down. Step on this and when it gets to
its optimum height, make a running jump over to the flagpole to try for 5000
points, and of course, enter castle number 4.

[ WORLD 4-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Spiny)

Walkthrough
-----------
This castle is the first 'maze' castle. What that means is that at certain
parts of the castle you come to there are a certain number of routes to take,
and you must take the correct on in order to advance to the next part of the
castle. So, here's what you must do to advance in this castle...

First, go down the staircase and cross the two little lava pits. Next, jump
onto the top of the floating brick formation and run to the right so you skip
over the little gaps between each column of bricks. After you go past a pipe
below you, carefully get past a Firerod and carry on until the platform
finishes and you come to the next part of the castle.

Cross the lava pit by using the small platforms of brick and go down the first
opening in the bricks you see and drop to the bottom path and continue running
to the right. Look out for a Firerod, and you'll start to see Bowser's flames
as you do so. Now it's a simple case of approaching the bridge and fighting
Bowser. Beware of the Podoboo bouncing up from the lava below the bridge, and a
Firerod attached to the bridge. When you defeat the Bowser Decoy, you'll once
again meet up with a Mushroom Retainer who says the same thing again. Yup, the
princess is in another castle.

[ WORLD 5-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Little Goomba
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Bullet Bill

Walkthrough
-----------
Stomp on the Koopa Troopa you see at the start of the level and kick its shell
to the right, and follow it as it plows down several enemies for a 1-Up! Watch
out as it will hit a pipe and rebound back towards you, so jump when it does!
Jump over this pipe when the Piranha Plant is inside it, then jump over the pit
a little to the right of it and get over a second pipe. A Koopa Paratroopa
approaches, so fight it with caution (kick its shell and it'll plow down more
enemies, remember to jump when it hits the inverted 'L' of blocks). Once you're
at this inverted 'L', jump on it and you'll see three bricks above you. Hit the
middle one to get a Starman. Grab it, jump to the ground and run right as fast
as possible, knocking out some Goombas and coming to a Bullet Bill cannon.

Jump over this cannon and leap over the pit and the pillar. Head right and
fight a huge pack full of Goombas and Koopas. You'll soon come to a pillar four
blocks high with two bricks to its right. The hidden 1-Up Mushroom of the level
is in the little gap between the top of the pillar and the bricks, but it'll be
there only if you got all the coins in World 4-3. Grab it if it is there then
stand on the bricks and make a running jump onto the pipe in the air past the
gap to the right, and just to the left of the Bullet Bill cannon. You can go
down this pipe and re-emerge later in the level, just after another couple of
pipes and a cannon.

Jump over the next Bullet Bill cannon and fight or avoid the Koopa Paratroopas
that appear after it. You'll then reach the staircase, which is missing a
couple of steps. Leap over this gap to reach the top two steps and with the
momentum, make a running jump to hit the flagpole and you'll finish the first
level of the fifth world.

[ WORLD 5-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Bullet Bill
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Hammer Bros.

Walkthrough
-----------
Go right and up the staircase and get past the Bullet Bill cannon that is
settled on the little platform on the top of the staircase. You can try to make
a running jump to reach the three coins in the air to your right. Avoid the
Koopa on the ground below and bounce on the trampoline to get onto the top
platform of bricks after the pit to the right. Drop down onto the middle brick
platform and get the coins and then bash the brick on the very right end of the
top platform to uncover a Power-up to grab. This'll be most useful, for coming
up is a Hammer Brother on a cluster of blocks that'll be some difficulty
getting past if you're not Fiery Mario (if in case you are, simply fry him).
Since you just collected a Power-up you'll be at least Super Mario so you can
try jumping over him or even risk stomping him, or just getting damaged so
you're temporarily invincible as you flash and you can quickly get past him.
You can enter the next pipe after the Hammer Brother to get to the Water Area
(a brief walkthrough of this area is included in the Cheats and Secrets
section) and make this level a little easier. Scroll down to the *** if you
take it. If not, carry on reading.

Go right and fight the Goombas coming down the partly destroyed staircase with
a pit in the middle, which you should cross carefully. Drop to the ground and
run right, and you'll see a Hammer Brother on top of five '?' Blocks (all of
which have coins in them). Try taking him out with a bump from underneath.
There are some coins on the ground and on one of the platforms to grab, then
make a running jump over the pit, fight/avoid the Koopa Paratroopa and jump
over the Bullet Bill cannon. Go right and you'll come to a silver pipe.

*** You come to two brick platforms. If you took the Hidden Water Area pipe,
you'll emerge here and it'll be unoccupied, but there will be two Hammer
Bros. here if you didn't warp to watch out for! Try to fight them if they
are. Bash the brick that is on the very right-hand end of the top layer of
bricks to get a Starman. Then jump over the pit and start running right to
take out some Buzzy Beetles and you'll see two bricks close to the ground.
The one on the left is a multi-coin block, and the one on the right has a
Power-up in it (if you are Super/Fiery Mario, you can reach this by doing
the Duck-Slide). When you've done what you want with them, make a running
jump off them to land on the platform above the pit, and then use this to
    finish crossing the pit.

Go right as usual and fight some enemies you come to and as you advance right
you'll see a pit with a pipe in the middle of it, with a brick to its left
(this holds a Power-up). Either use the pipe or the platform with coins on
above it to get across the pit. You'll then see the staircase, also partly
destroyed and with a Koopa Paratroopa going down it. Fight or avoid it and
carefully climb the staircase and make the leap over to the flagpole and
therefore finishing the level.

[ WORLD 5-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Bullet Bill
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Little Goomba

Walkthrough
-----------
Start by going right, jump onto the tree and into the next set of trees, and
keep an eye out for the Bullet Bills which will fly from the right-hand side of
the screen at you constantly until you reach the end of the level. On the top
of the trees is a Koopa Troopa and some coins; get these. Drop down to get the
single coin on the lower tree to the right, and get the two coins in the air
above the next tree. Two Goombas will drop down from the tree beside this one;
take care of them. From this tree, jump down to the next one, a little lower to
the right, and get the two coins as you fall.

Cross the pit and using the short girder and you'll see a set of two trees. The
bottom one has a '?' Block there with a Power-up in, and the higher one has
four coins on it to grab (use the girder going up and down to get them). Go
past the next two trees and get past the Koopa hovering above the pit by frying
it if you're Fiery Mario or just plain jumping over it and fight the Goombas in
the next tree.

Next you'll have to cross a giant gorge using some girders that are reasonably
short, and at the same time, avoiding Bullet Bills, and also getting the coins
if you want the 1-Up Mushroom in World 6-1. Do this with precision as it can be
a little tricky. From the next tree, jump into the next one and fight the Koopa
then drop down to the next tree to the right (try taking care of the Koopa
Paratroopa flying above it) and get the three coins on this tree. Jump over the
gap between the next two trees, getting the coins, then go right, either taking
the girder, or walking, to the staircase so you can jump over to the flagpole
and finish the level.

(Hands up anyone who noticed this level is a rehash of World 1-3?)

[ WORLD 5-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Lakitu)

Walkthrough
-----------
Go down the staircase and head right and cross the huge lava pit by using the
platforms (beware of the HUGE Firerod on the second one). The '?' Block above
the middle platform has a Power-up with it. Be sure to be quick to get it.
After you finish crossing the pit, in the next area take either the top or
bottom route, avoiding the Firerods. Jump onto where the ledge rises and get
across the big pit using the short girders going up and down, and watch out for
the flames Bowser spits that appear about here. You'll see six coins around a
block with a Firerod on it. Don't try getting the coin directly below the block
with the Firerod on it unless you're Regular Mario. Get across the next two
lava pits (watch out for Podoboos leaping out of them), get past the next two
trenches and face Bowser, and after you beat him you'll find the Mushroom
Retainer with the same words "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another
castle!" Bah. Onto World 6 we go.

(Again, hands up anyone who noticed this level is a rehash of World 2-4?)

Level Enemies
-------------
- Lakitu
- Spiny

Walkthrough
-----------
Go right, and you'll come to two '?' Blocks - they both hold coins within them.
Get these, then jump over the pit to the right. As you go up the wide staircase
of blocks, Lakitu will appear about here to drop Spiny Eggs down at you. If you
played through World 4-1, you'll know what to do in this case - advance to the
right as quickly as possible and always try to find a high spot, which you can
use in order to stomp Lakitu or hit him with a fireball. You'll find two bricks
in the air at the end of this wide staircase - bash the one on the left to get
a Power-up, and also use these bricks to try to get Lakitu.

Jump over the pit and you'll see three bricks. Bash the one on the very right
as it's a multi-coin block and then continue running right. Jump over the next
short pit and get the three coins in the air. Climb up the staircase after
those and jump over the pit and get the next two coins. Next you'll see a
partly destroyed staircase - climb this and you'll see a formation of bricks
after, where you can find the level's secret 1-Up if you got all the coins in
World 5-3. This diagram shows where it is:

                             | |

Get it, then jump over the pit with the bricks above it. Jump over the next
pipe when the Piranha Plant occupying it isn't sticking out and get the three
coins in the air after it. As you run along, you'll come to another staircase.
Go up this and you'll see two '?' Blocks above a brick platform above a pit to
the right of it. The left block has a Power-up in it and the other one holds a
coin for you to get. Continue right, past another staircase and some bricks,
then jump over one last pit and climb the staircase (watch out for the pit in
the middle of it) and jump over to the flagpole and finish the level.

[ WORLD 6-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Little Goomba

Walkthrough
-----------
Run to the right past the bricks and the first pipe you come to, you can enter
to a coin room. If you do take this, scroll down to the ***. If not, carry on
reading.

Next, there's a Koopa Troopa trapped between two pipes with some bricks in the
air above it. Take care of the Koopa if you can (if it involves kicking a shell
think again), stand exactly halfway between the pipes and jump up to find a
hidden block then stand on this and jump up to hit the multi-coin block above
it. When you've got all the coins, continue right, jumping over several more
pipes.

*** Go right, past some more pipes, and you will see a Buzzy Beetle trapped
between two pipes with two bricks in the air above it. Hit the right-hand
brick and you'll uncover a Power-up; get this. The pipe to the right of the
Buzzy Beetle can be entered. If you go down it, scroll down to the ###, or
if you choose to carry on progressing through the level normally, then
    carry on reading.

As you go past a couple more pipes you'll see two Goombas drop to the ground
from a brick platform high above you. Go right a little and when you see
another brick platform in the air, you can access a coin heaven. Stand one
block space to the right of the pipe directly under the bricks and jump up to
uncover a hidden block, then stand on this to hit the brick on the right-hand
end of the platform to uncover a vine and to reach it and climb. If you take
it, scroll down to the ^^^. If not, carry on reading.

Between the next two pipes there is a trapped Buzzy Beetle to get past another
set of pipes and you'll come to a pipe with a brick on each side, and to the#
right of that is another pipe, with a brick platform above it, and a pit to the
right of it.

### Make a huge jump over the pit after the pipe or use the long platform of
bricks above it in the air to get across safely. Next are two pipes with
some Piranha Plants in them - get past these and use the small brick
platforms in the air to get over the little pits, and you'll come to a pipe
between a staircase and a patch of blocks to its right. You can enter this
pipe to a coin room, and you will re-emerge in the overworld just after a
Goomba, a Buzzy Beetle and a pack of pipes.

^^^ Go past an ascending staircase of pipes, another pipe to the right of that,
then you will reach the staircase, which has a pipe lodged in it, and a
Koopa bouncing down them. Fight this Koopa then climb the staircase, being
wary of the Piranha Plant in the pipe as you do so, and then jump onto the
flagpole as you usually do to finish the level.

[ WORLD 6-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bullet Bill

Walkthrough
-----------
Snow level! Yay! Although this level is all iced up, it's no different from any
of the other levels you've been through so far, so just treat it like a normal
level. Start off by running right and jump over the first set of three trees
and jump onto the girder going up and down above the pit. Let it take you into
the air so you can get the two coins high in the air. After the next tree,
you'll see another one a little lower with a trampoline on it, and in the air
above that is a girder moving horiztonally that's a little high to reach...
guessed what to do yet? Yup, bounce on the trampoline (hitting the A Button as
you do so) to rocket into the air to reach a high enough height to land on the
girder. As it moves along, get the row of coins. Jump across another two
girders, and you'll see a '?' Block above the third one, which has a Power-up
in it. Try to get this if you can.

Next jump onto the vertically-moving elevator and make another jump to the
right to land on the next tree, then make another running jump onto the
balance-elevator to cross the next pit, and see if you can try to get the two
coins between the girders on the balance-elevator. Use the next
balance-elevator to jump onto the highest part of the next set of trees to
collect three coins on it. Continue moving to the right and when you land on
the next tree, Bullet Bills will start flying at you.

Go right another couple of trees and jump over the little gap to get four coins
in the air. As you advance past some more trees, you'll see another trampoline.
Bounce high off this to land on the girder high in the air to get across the
pit, and jump onto the balance-elevator and get the coins. From here, jump into
the set of trees to the right, and to the right of these you'll see another set
of those girders that fall when you step on them. Use these to cross the pit
and get two sets of coins and when you get to the last tree, make a running
jump to hit the flagpole and enter castle number six.

[ WORLD 6-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Blooper)

Walkthrough
-----------
Head right and jump over the lava pit. Next, cross a lava pit using a pillar
sticking out of it. On this pillar there is a Firerod, so time your jumping.
The '?' Block in the air above it has a Power-up in (watch out for the Firerod
if you are trying to get it). Then finish crossing the lava pit and into the
next area.

Run through a tunnel and avoid the Firerods as you do so. When the tunnel opens
up a little, you've got to get past a series of even more firebars. Next you'll
approach a giant pit which has six secret invisible coin blocks in the air
above it (look at the diagram in World 1-4 of this walkthrough to see the exact
location of where they are). Once you get them, keep going right and you'll
find a trench before the bridge. This is a good location to shoot fireballs at
Bowser from if you're Fiery Mario. Either way, use fireballs or grab the axe to
beat him and you'll see ANOTHER Mushroom Retainer giving you the exact same
message as all the other ones have (geez, this is getting ridiculous). Onto
World 7 we go.

(Hands up anyone who noticed this level is a rehash of World 1-4?)

[ WORLD 7-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Hammer Bros.
- Bullet Bill
- Buzzy Beetle

Walkthrough
-----------
Head right and jump over the first Bullet Bill cannon and get past the Koopa
Paratroopa between this cannon and two cannons on top of each other to the
right. Also above the two cannons to the right is a row of bricks. Hit the very
left one for a Power-up (if you're Regular Mario a Super Mushroom will appear
to fall of the edge for you to collect, you can't reach this if it's a Fire
Flower). After the next Bullet Bill cannon is a row of four '?' Blocks being
guarded by a Koopa Paratroopa (get rid of this if you can). The blocks have
coins in them. Whilst getting them, avoid the Bullet Bills being fired from the
cannons on either side of you.

Jump over the next cannon and you'll see another Koopa Paratroopa trapped
between the cannon you just jumped over, and a set of two cannons tp the right.
Get past these and you'll then see a floating ledge of bricks with a Bullet
Bill cannon on it. The brick on the right of the cannon that is closest to it
is a multi-coin block, bash this repeatedly if you want, but be aware of the
Bullet Bills that will be fired at you from either side. After the next cannon
is jumped over, jump over the pit and over the pipe that comes after it. After
the pipe you'll see two brick platforms with the Hammer Bros. on them - I
simply suggest that you try running past or using fireballs to take them out if
you are Fiery Mario.

Next you'll come to a silver pipe. Stand on top of it on the very left-hand
edge and then jump directly up to find the secret 1-Up Mushroom of the level
(it'll only be here if you got all the coins in World 6-3 or warped here). You
can also enter this pipe to go to a coin room and re-emerge later in the level
after another Bullet Bill cannon and a couple of pipes.

Now, jump over the next cannon and another pipe and you will see two brick
platforms with the Hammer Bros. on them again. Get past the Hammer Bros. by
either evasion or fireballs, then jump over the block pillar and the two Bullet
Bill cannons piled on each other, to continue to the right to see some bricks
and a trampoline on the ground. Hitting the brick directly above the trampoline
awards you with a Power-up. Watch out for the little pit next to it, though.
Get the Power-up if yo need to, jump over the first staircase and on the next
staircase you'll see a Buzzy Beetle coming down (you can do the Extra Lives
cheat here. See the Cheats and Secrets section for information). Climb up to
the top of the staircase and make the long jump onto the flagpole and finish
the level.

[ WORLD 7-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Cheep-Cheep
- Blooper

Walkthrough
-----------
As you swim to the right, you'll see two coins on the sea floor to the right of
a bit of seaweed. Get these and continue swimming right past a couple of
Bloopers and get the next three coins, floating near the surface, and three
more coins on the ground just a little to the right of some seaweed. Swim right
past three more Bloopers and you'll come to a bracketed pit with three coins in
it. Get them but remember to watch out for the suction at the bottom of the
screen.

Swim right, past a huge horde of more Bloopers and Cheep-Cheeps and you will
find three more coins under a little platform with some seaweed on it. Get
these and continue swimming on, and get three more coins on another platform
near the surface and a little further to the right, past some more Cheep-Cheeps
you will reach another pit to swim across with five coins in it. Get them, but
remember to keep up as you swim because of the suction.

Next, after some seaweed and three Cheep-Cheeps and a Blooper there is another
bracketed pit with six coins in. Get these if you can, but remember to look out
for the Blooper (if you are Fiery Mario, use a fireball). Next, swim past four
platforms and some more enemies and enter the exit pipe in the wall at the end.
You'll emerge next to the staircase, so do the usual routine of climbing it and
then performing a running jump to hit the flagpole and thus finish the level.

(Again, hands up anyone who noticed this level is a rehash of World 2-2?)

[ WORLD 7-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Cheep-Cheep

Walkthrough
-----------
Head to the right, go over the little pit, and the moment you go up the
staircase, Cheep-Cheep will start flying up, so you had better constantly be on
the run. A little to the right on the first bridge, you'll find four coins
above a Koopa Troopa. Get them and keep on running. Past a Koopa Paratroopa
there are five coins shaped like a 'W' to get, then jump over the pit and onto
the next section of the bridge, which has four coins and a Koopa Troopa on it,
then just jump over the large pit to the next section of the bridge.

Run right and advance past the Koopa and jump over to the next section of
bridge, getting the coins (the '?' Block here has a Power-up in it). Get it if
you must, then make a jump down to the bit of land to your right and get the
coins and fight the Koopa Troopa, then make a jump onto the little broken piece
of bridge and then jumping onto the next main bridge. There is a line of six
coins in the air for you to get; make sure you do so, and avoid the flying
Green Koopa Troopa (don't see many of these) and jump to the next bridge.

Get the four coins whilst avoiding the flying Koopa and jump onto the next
bridge, and following this you need to cross over a pit using three little bits
of broken bridge, and getting six coins in the air above them as you do so
before you jump onto the next bridge. Go down the staircase then run right,
jump over the last pit and climb the staircase to jump over to the flagpole and
finishing the level.

(Once more, hands up anyone who noticed this level is a rehash of World 2-3?)

[ WORLD 7-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Hammer Brother)

Walkthrough
-----------
Go right down the stairs and at the end of the tunnel you need to cross a large
lava pit using some of those girders that fall when you step on them. Be
careful as you do so, because Podoboos will jump out of the lava occassionally.
In the next area, the castle is split up like a maze again. Run underneath the
brick formation you see ahead, then when you see two brick platforms after it,
run along on the bottom one. Next you'll see another brick formation, jump onto
the top of this and run to the right.

At the end of it, you'll see a lava pit with some bricks above it. To the left
is a little part of the ground that rises up; drop onto this and make a running
jump onto the bricks that are near the ceiling and run to the right. Be careful
for a Firerod on the second little lot of bricks as you run along. At the end
of that, you'll see three routes you can take, split up by two lines of bricks.
Run along the middle row of them. Jump on the top lot of bricks next (that
looks like an inverted 'L') and run to the right.

As you go right past another load of trenches, Bowser's flames will start
appearing. Eventually you will see the bridge on which to battle him. Use
fireballs or grab the axe as usual. You'll see the Mushroom Retainer and by now
you'll be sick of seeing that same statement, but this is the last Mushroom
Retainer you'll come to! Hoorah! Now onto the longest and most difficult world
of the game. Get ready.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

NOTE
----
In all the previous levels (excluding castle levels), if you passed the halfway
point of a level and died, you restarted at the halfway point. In World 8, you
will start at the beginning of the level no matter where you die. So you had
better sharpen your reflexes and be ready, this is the toughest part of the
game.

[ WORLD 8-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Little Goomba

Walkthrough
-----------
This is the longest level of the game, and you only have the shorter of the two
time limits (that being 300 seconds) to get this level finished, so remember
that time is of the essence. Be as quick as you can and remember that advanced
skills play a big role in this level so be prepared.

When you start, go right as usual, stomp the Buzzy Beetle and kick its shell to
the right so that it plows down several of the Goombas, but it'll eventually
hit a pipe and bounce back, so remember to jump when it does so! Jump over that
pipe and advance past the Koopa Troopas that follow after it. To get past the
little gaps, run over them at full speed and Mario will simply skil over them.
This technique will be important throughout this level and the next one. After
you cross the little gaps, kick the Koopa and kick its shell at the Goombas to
the right. Get the sole coin in the air, run right and you'll see two pipes
with a Buzzy Beetle trapped between them.

Stand exactly halfway between the two pipes and jump up to uncover the hidden
1-Up Mushroom of World 8. Quickly get it and then jump over the right pipe and
continue to run right. Get the coin in the air, jump over the next pipe and get
the coin in the air to the right of it, and you can enter the next pipe after
it, to re-emerge later, just after some more Goombas, Koopa Troopas, coins and
pipes.

When you reach the pipe that you warp out of if you took the coin room, run
right and jump over the sole Koopa Troopa and jump over the next pipe. Simply
avoid (you won't have time to fight many enemies since you want to beat this
level as quickly as possible) and you'll come to two block pillars spread
widely apart, with a Koopa Paratroopa trapped between them, and a platform of
bricks in the air above it. Stand exactly between these pillars and jump up to
find a hidden block, then stand on this and jump directly up to hit the brick
above it, which is a multi-coin block. After you use it up, quickly get past
these pillars and continue advancing to the right.

Avoid the Koopa Paratroopas that come after this and run over some more of
those little gaps. Next you'll see a brick platform in the air after you finish
crossing the gaps; bash the third brick from the left to find a Starman; grab
this and START RUNNING AS QUICK AS YOU CAN WHILE YOU ARE FLASHING! Run over a
couple of the little pits and fight the Koopas, jump over the little stump and
then make a long jump over a pit with two coins above it and then carry on
running to the right and fight a couple of Goombas.

You then need to cross over a pit using three ascending pipes sticking out of
the ground. Then after that, fight a Buzzy Beetle and a long line of Goombas
then climb the staircase and drop to the ground. Get the coins if you want, but
remember to be quick, and avoid the Buzzy Beetle. Run right and jump over the
large pit, using the little island in the middle as a stepping stone to get
across (use the coins as guidelines), then jump over the little stumps with the
Koopa trapped between them, then make another running jump over another large
pit that has a small island in the middle of it. This time, you must be more
precise with your jumps, but use the coins as guidelines, because they help out
when you give it a good try.

After successfully crossing the pit, get past some more Koopas, jump over two
pipes then climb the partly destroyed staircase (careful not to fall down the
gaps!) and leap over to the flagpole to complete this very long, difficult and
frustrating level.

[ WORLD 8-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Lakitu
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Bullet Bill
- Buzzy Beetle
- Spiny
- Little Goomba

Walkthrough
-----------
Run to the right, jump over the Koopa Paratroopa and land on the _third_ step
of the staircase. The Koopa Paratroopa coming down the staircase should bounce
directly over you. Then QUICKLY finish ascending the staircase (to avoid Lakitu
dropping Spiny Eggs down on you) then drop to the ground and run right. The
four '?' Blocks have coins in case you wanted to know, but your main focus
should be trying to beat this level like before, as this one is also reasonably
long.

Get over the little pit, and you'll see a trampoline. If you bounce on it and
hit the brick that is directly above it, you can get a 1-Up Mushroom, but you'd
have to follow it all the way to the end of the platform if you want it. Just
continue running right over some of those little pits, and doing your best to
evade the Koopa Paratroopas bouncing about. Jump onto the platform made of two
bricks and make a long running jump to the right and start making running jumps
over the Bullet Bill cannons using the floating brick platforms in the air
between them.

After you get past all the cannons, jump over the pipe when the Piranha Plant
isn't sticking out of it, get past the Koopa and you'll see another pipe just
to the left of two little islands and a huge pit. To cross this pit, make a
running jump onto this pipe and with the momentum make a LONG running jump to
the very end of the pit, and you should make it across and crash into a pipe.
You can enter this pipe; you'll just re-appear after another pipe and a couple
of Koopa Paratroopas.

Next, jump onto the Bullet Bill cannon sticking out of the rather large pit and
to the right you should see some Goombas going down a staircase. Wait until
they fall down the pit, then jump over the pit and climb up the staircase and
hop over the next Bullet Bill cannon with a Buzzy Beetle to the left of it. To
the right is the partly destroyed staircase - wait until the Koopa Paratroopa
has finished descending it, then get past it, climb the staircase carefully and
jump over to the flagpole to finish the level.

[ WORLD 8-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Bullet Bill
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Hammer Bros.

Walkthrough
-----------
You are now at the castle walls. Now what I really HATE about this level
(seeing as it is the most difficult level in the entire game) is because of the
multiple annoying Hammer Brothers. The best way to tackle them is if you are
Fiery Mario, but if you are not, it's going to be hard, since you'd have to
make running jumps over their heads and it is tough tackling them when you're
at those bits where there are two brick platforms, and it could tacke a few
tries to get past them.

So, when you start, run right and jump over the first Bullet Bill cannon, get
past the Koopa Paratroopa and jump over a second cannon then jump onto the pipe
that follows it. To the right is a pair of brick ledges with Hammer Bros. on
them. I suggest getting past by simply making a running jump onto the top row
and then leaping over a Hammer Brother if it is there and then jump over the
pit to the right with the staircase. Being Fiery Mario will help a lot, as I
have already told you. By the way, the very end brick on the right of the top
brick ledge has a Power-up in it, if you want to get this (it'd require
tangling with them Hammer Bros. though).

After that, continue running right and jump over another Bullet Bill cannon,
getting past a Koopa Paratroopa and then jumping over a pillar of blocks. Then
jump onto the next set of blocks, and then you'll see another two brick ledges.
Advance past it the same way as you did last time, then after the pit, stomp
the Koopa Troopa and kick its shell to the right to knock out the Hammer Bros.,
and jump when it rebounds off the pipe.

After the pipe, you need to get past two more Hammer Bros. (oh dear God no),
and before the "staircase" you'll see a little white line in the bricks of the
background, which is actually a cleverly disguised multi-coin block. Once you
have used it up, climb up the staircase of floating blocks (and please do be
careful) then make the jump to the flagpole and be ready to face the last
castle of the game.

[ WORLD 8-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser

Walkthrough
-----------
Yes, this is a maze castle, as the last castle of the game would typically be,
but it's different from all the other maze castles you've been in. Instead of
taking a correct path to advance, you must enter a certain pipe that you come
across. Also, some pipes will transport you back to the very beginning if you
take the wrong one, so try to follow my instructions as best you can, or as
another thing I suggest, look at the GameFAQs FAQ page for this game, and find
the map for this level that was drawn by my friend StarFighters76, as I have
found it most useful and it explains how to beat the level perfectly. He also
has some other maps I suggest checking out too, because they are helpful for
this game.

So, to start off with, drop down to the bottom step of the staircase that you
start on then make a long jump over the lava pit after it, and when you land on
the ground, start running right. Jump over the first two pipes, avoid the three
Goombas after the second one then next, cross the lava pit by using the girder
moving horizontally across in it, then on the other side, enter the first pipe
that you come to.

When you emerge in the next area, jump over the next pipe and avoid the Buzzy
Beetles, jump over the next pipe and get past a couple of Koopa Paratroopas,
jump over the next pipe and the lava pit, and you'll see a pipe in the air that
you need to enter. Avoid the Koopa Paratroopas, and enter the pipe by finding a
hidden block as a stepping stone to get in it. The hidden block is located as
this diagram points out:

                           +--------+
                           | |
                           +--------+
                            | |
                            | |
                            | |
                   +---+ +------+
                -> |   |    |      |
                   +---+ +------+

In the next area, jump over the first pipe you come to and Cheep-Cheep will
start flying up, so do your best to avoid them. Jump over another pipe and leap
over the lava pit, then enter the first pipe that comes after it.

The next area of the castle is underwater. Just simply swim to the right, and
avoid the Bloopers and Firerods (you know, it still confuses me as to how those
Firerods don't go out in the water, as I've stated about a million times now),
and enter the exit pipe at the end of the area.

In the final area, get past one more pipe and a Hammer Brother, then make a
running jump over the huge lava pit to land on the bridge with Bowser on, for
the final battle (well, it's not final between Mario and Bowser, but it's the
final battle of the game) and as you always did before, hit him with five
fireballs or grab the axe to see his rather bland demise, and Mario heads into
the next room to meet the Princess, and...well, I'm not going to spoil this
ending for you, it's not much, but you deserved it, so enjoy! Next, you'll be
able to select a world from the Title Screen in the second quest!

Congratulations upon beating Super Mario Bros.!

                          4. Second Quest Walkthrough
===============================================================================

It was suggested to me by Trace "Meowthnum1" Jackson that I should make a
second walkthrough for the harder version of the game, as detailed as the
previous one. To let you snoopers know, not a single word of it has been taken
from the first walkthrough, so I'm not being lazy or cheap. =P

[ WORLD 1-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
The first '?' Block you come to has a coin in it. Stomp the nearby Buzzy
Beetle. Next there are two '?' Blocks between three bricks and a '?' Block
above them. The first lower '?' Block contains a Super Mushroom and the other
two contain coins. Jump over the two green pipes and stomp the Buzzy Beetle and
kick it away. Jump over the third pipe and stomp the two Buzzy Beetles and get
rid of them. You can enter the next pipe, but I wouldn't recommend it, as you
can get a 1-Up Mushroom and two Power-ups. However, if you choose going down
the pipe, scroll down to the ***.

After the pipe you'll see a green hill in the background. It covers three of
the overworld block spaces. Stand on the block on the left, and jump up to get
a hidden 1-Up Mushroom. You can just about get the 1-Up Mushroom and still get
down the pipe if you don't move around too much. Jump over the pit and you'll
get to a brick layer with a '?' Block in it. Kill the two Buzzy Beetles, and
bash the '?' Block for a Power-up.

Cross the gap and kick away the next two Buzzy Beetles. Below the '?' Block in
the air (which contains a coin) is a multi-coin block. Carrying on, a Koopa
Troopa will approach you, so rid it. Then, you'll get to two Brick blocks. The
second one has a secret Starman in it. Carry on and kill the two Buzzy Beetles.
There are four '?' Blocks here. Three are arranged in a layer and there is a
'?' Block above it. The three blocks on the bottom have coins in them and the
block above it has a Power-up.

Carry on ahead and kill the four Buzzy Beetles. There are two bricks with two
'?' Blocks between bricks above them. The blocks contain coins. Jump over the
two pairs of staircases and you will approach a pipe.

*** Stomp and kick away the two Buzzy Beetle and bash the '?' Block between the
bricks for a coin. Jump over the next pipe, climb the staircase and grab
    the flagpole.

[ WORLD 1-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
Kill the two Buzzy Beetless approaching. The first '?' Block in the row of five
contains a Power-up, and the others have coins. Climb over the six pillars and
stomp the Buzzy Beetle in the small pit (don't kick it!). There is a Multi-coin
block above the Buzzy Beetle. Climb over the next two pillars and kill the two
Koopa Troopas. In the air is a W-shaped brick formation with six coins. Bash
the coins on the left side if you are Super/Fiery Mario and grab the coins.
Then bash the right side of the brick formation and the top brick will reveal a
Starman. Kill the Koopa Troopa approaching and run under the brick wall if you
are regular Mario, or bash the bricks above you and climb through if you are
Super/Fiery Mario.

Two Buzzy Beetles will approach you, so kill them. There is a ledge with four
coins on it. Grab the coins and move on. You'll come to a brick formation that
looks like a L - some say it's a backwards shaped J. Kill the Buzzy Beetles
without scrolling the screen past the L. If you're Super Mario, bash the bricks
on the right side of the L and the top one will reveal a Fire Flower (you can
only get it while you are Super Mario). Bash the bricks to the left of the
brick with the coin on and you'll have a little step to grab the Fire Flower.
You'll then come to a 5 x 2 brick layer. Bash the bricks on the right side of
it, and the second one up will contain a Multi-coin brick.

Then jump onto the brick platform and take a running jump to the right. You
should land on a brick platform with six coins on top. Step to where the sixth
coin is, and jump directly up and the brick on the ceiling will reveal a 1-Up
Mushroom. Bash the brick to the right if you are Super Mario to make it fall
down. Kill the three Goombas and you'll come to three pipes. Enter the first
one for a coin room. If you don't do this, keep reading, but if you do enter
the pipe, scroll to the ***.

Go over the next pipe and watch out for the Pirahna Plant. Kill the Buzzy
Beetle. Jump over the third pipe.

*** Jump over the gaps with the bricks in the middle and kill/avoid the two
Buzzy Beetles on the staircase. Climb the staircase and jump over the
elevators onto the brick platform with a Red Koopa Troopa below it. The
last brick to the right of the platform contains a Power-up. Jump onto the
elevators. Now, from here, you can enter the exit pipe, or you can ride the
elevators to the top of the screen and run across the ceiling to get to
warp zone. Check the Secret Areas section for more details. Anyways, if you
take the exit pipe, you'll emerge in the overworld at the staircase. Climb
it and jump over to the flagpole.

[ WORLD 1-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Bullet Bill

NOTE: Bullet Bills appear in this level, exclusive in the second quest.

Walkthrough
-----------
Run to the end of the platform and jump onto the tree. Then jump into the next
one. Above this tree is another tree with a Red Koopa Troopa guarding three
coins. The next tree, a little lower than this one, has one coin on it. In the
air above the fourth tree are two coins. There are two Buzzy Beetles on the
next tree. Jump down to the next tree and grab the two coins on the way down.
There are two trees next to the elevator; one on top of the other. On the top
tree are four coins, and the '?' Block on the lower tree contains a Power-up.

Jump over the gap and climb to the next tree. If you are Fiery Mario, you
should take out the Red Koopa Paratroopa hovering in the air. There is a Buzzy
Beetle on the tree to its right. Let it fall before advancing. If you are not
Fiery Mario, you will have to do a well-timed jump to reach the next tree.

Hop onto the horizontal moving elevators and collect the two coins in the air.
Jump onto the next elevator and get the four coins in the air. Land on the tree
and jump onto the next one. Kill the red Koopa Troopa, and see if you can kill
the Red Koopa Paratroopa to the right of the tree. Below you is a short tree
with three coins on it. In the air between the next two trees are two coins.
You will then get to safe ground. Kill the Koopa or use the elevator to get
past it. Climb the staircase and jump over to the flagpole.

[ WORLD 1-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Goomba)

Walkthrough
-----------
Go down the staircase and jump over the lava pit. Then you'll come to a pillar
between two lava pits with a '?' Block above it. There is a firerod there, so
avoid it by standing on top of the block and waiting for it to rotate. In the
'?' Block is a Power-up. Jump over the second lava pit and run through the
tunnel, avoiding the firebars. In the next section are six firebars (as opposed
to three in the First Quest). Get past them and you'll reach a huge pit.
Bowser's fire breath should start coming towards you, so be careful here.

In this huge pit are six invisible blocks in two layers. There are three just
above Mario, and the other three are one coin space to the right in the air
above these ones. Carry on and you'll come to the bridge with Bowser. Either
fry him with five fireballs, run underneath him and grab the axe, or ride the
elevator above him and grab the axe to defeat him. Mario/Luigi will approach a
Mushroom Retainer who has been kidnapped by Bowser, who will say: "Thank you
Mario (Luigi)! But our princess is in another castle!" Well you've not found
the princess yet, so keep going.

[ WORLD 2-1 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Troopa

Walkthrough
-----------
The centre brick of the first three bricks you come to holds a Power-up in it.
Kill the Buzzy Beetle coming down the stairway and jump over the stairs and
into the Koopa pit. If you are Fiery Mario, I'd suggest that you fry the Koopas
because kicked shells bounce around everywhere, and here wouldn't be a nice
place to do it. Anyway, stand four coin spaces from the left stairway and jump
up to get an invisible coin block. Jump on top of the block then jump straight
up again to reveal a second invisible block which holds a hidden 1-Up Mushroom
(which will only be there if you got all the coins in World 1-3, or warped to
World 2).

Jump over the wall to your right and avoid the two Buzzy Beetles. Jump over the
green pipe and you'll see a Koopa Troopa approach you. Stomp it and kick the
shell at the approaching Buzzy Beetles. You'll now be at a set of '?' Blocks
shaped like a '=' sign. The very left block on the bottom row contains a
Power-up. The other nine hold coins. Kill any more enemies approaching you, and
hop onto the brick below the row of four bricks before the pipe. While on the
brick, jump and hit the very left brick in the row above you to reveal a
Starman. You'll come to seven '?' Blocks with a row of five bricks above them.
There are three Buzzy Beetles below, kill them if necessary. The '?' Blocks all
have coins, and if you bash the centre brick that is above them, a vine will
appear and grow up to Coin Heaven. If you climb the vine, scroll down to the
*** (you can find more info on Coin Heavens in Section 08). Carry on reading if
you choose not to climb the vine.

Jump over the pit and kill the Goomba. Jump onto the pipe and jump over the
gap. Kill the next Goomba, then jump over the pipe, and kill the next Goomba.
There is a set of three pipes here, and four bricks above the centre one. Bash
the brick on the left for a Power-up. Carrying on, kill the Koopa Troopa or let
it walk into the pit, then jump over it. There is a Green Koopa Paratroopa on
the island you are on now, kill it. Jump over the gap and over the wall and
kill the two Buzzy Beetles.

*** The sole brick is a multi-coin block. Kill the two Koopa Paratroopas
approaching you, and bash the '?' Block ahead for a coin. The brick above
it and to its right contains a Power-up. Here's how you can reach it:

If you are Regular Mario, get a run up and do a running jump onto the '?'
Block. Immediately jump again while still running on the block and hold right
hard and you should bump it on the corner. If you are Super/Fiery Mario, you
can simply reach it with a full-speed running jump from the ground.

Jump over the pipe and kill the Koopa Troopa. Stand on the brick platform and
stand on the brick on the right. Jump straight up to reveal an invisible coin
block. Use this or the Springboard to get on top of the wall and jump over to
the flagpole.

- Blooper
- Cheep-Cheep

Walkthrough
-----------
Past the pink seaweed are two coins. After the stone platform and the seaweed
wall you'll see three coins floating in the water. Past the seaweed are another
three coins, and a Blooper. Keep swimming, and you'll get to a bracketed pit
with three coins in it. Be careful, as there is an unseen whirlpool at the
bottom of the screen and it can cost you a life if you get sucked in.

Swimming on, you'll encounter a rather large group of Cheep-cheeps and Bloopers
here. I'd suggest avoiding them rather than fighting them, as they can be
mighty tricky to avoid in water. Swim on, and below the stone platform with
seaweed on it are three coins. Carry on, kill or avoid Blooper, and grab the
three coins floating in the water before the seaweed.

Carry on, and you'll come to another bracketed pit with five coins in it. Swim
through the pit, and you'll approach a bracketed pit where the walls are shaped
like upside down Ls back-to-back. There are six coins in the pit. Swim back out
and continue swimming right, and you'll get to the exit pipe. You'll warp out
of the water and to the staircase. Climb it, and jump over to the flagpole to
complete the level.

[ WORLD 2-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Cheep-Cheep

Walkthrough
-----------
Climb the staircase onto the bridge. Here, the best thing you should do is RUN,
Cheep-cheeps will start flying up towards you. Some part in the middle of the
first bridge there are four coins in the air, then another five in a 'W' shape
before the gap. Jump over this gap onto the next bridge. Grab the four coins in
the air then jump onto the next bridge. Run to the end and leap to the next
bridge, and grab the three coins in the air. The '?' Block here has a Power-up.
In the air above the gap between this bridge and the wide stump of grass to the
right are three coins.

From the grass, jump onto the broken bridge part, then onto the next bridge.
Grab the six coins in the air and jump onto the next bridge. Get the four coins
here, and jump over to the next bridge. Then you'll come to three lined up
broken bridge parts with six coins above them. Get the coins, jump over to the
bridge, then go down the staircase and onto the grass. Jump over the gap, and
you'll be at the staircase before the flag.

[ WORLD 2-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Koopa Troopa)

Walkthrough
-----------
Run to the end of the tunnel and jump over the lava pit, and go to the centre
platform. The '?' Block in the air above it contains a Power-up. Jump over to
the tunnel that is split up by a horizontal brick platform. Run through it, and
watch out for the fire rods. You'll approach two sets of elevators. Jump
between elevators and jump to the other side, avoiding the fire rod, and you'll
approach a firebar with some coins around it. If you don't want to take any
risks, avoid it and just move on.

Carry on past the two empty pits and you'll get to the Bowser Decoy. There are
some bricks in the top-left corner of the battle arena, which makes it harder
to get to the elevator above him. However it's not much of a problem, and you
could run underneath him, fry him with five fireballs, grab the axe, but
whatever you do, you'll approach another Mushroom Retainer to find out this
isn't the castle the princess in either. Oh well, you'll have to carry on
anyway.

- Koopa Paratroopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Troopa
- Hammer Bros.

Walkthrough
-----------
The first two '?' Blocks you come to hold coins, and the third has a Power-up.
Kill the Koopa Paratroopas bouncing towards you. Jump over the silver pipe and
avoid the Buzzy Beetle trapped between the pipes. You can enter the second
silver pipe to get to a coin room, and if you choose to enter it, scroll down
to the ***. Jump over the gap and kill the three Buzzy Beetles and jump over
the next two silver pipes.

*** Climb the staircase and onto the bridge. Kill the three Buzzy Beetles.
Stand on the right hand side of the bridge and jump straight up for a
hidden 1-Up Mushroom. Jump over the little pit. In the air is a row of
three bricks. The very left brick holds a Starman, and it's easy to get if
you're Super/Fiery Mario, while if you're Regular Mario, you'll have to get
bit of speed so you can hit it. Once you get the Starman, kill all enemies
on the ground and jump over the pipe.

Carry on and you'll get to two brick rows with two Hammer Brothers. This will
be your first encounter with the Hammer Brothers, so I'd suggest bumping them
from underneath. On the top row of bricks are two '?' Blocks. The one on the
left has a coin in it, the one on the right holds a Power-up. After the
Springboard and above the pit you'll see a '=' shaped row of bricks. Take a
running jump and land between them. Bash the very right brick on the top row to
reveal a vine. If you climb it you'll get to Coin Heaven. If not, carry on
reading. Scroll down to the ### if you take the vine.

Kill or avoid the two Buzzy Beetles coming down the staircase. Leap over the
gap and stomp the Koopa Troopa and kick the shell at the Buzzy Beetles
approaching you. Here are four clusters of '?' Blocks lodged between bricks.
The '?' Block in the lower-right hand corner holds a Power-up, and the other
three hold coins. Kill the Koopas ahead.

### You'll see a row of five brick blocks here. The second from the left is a
multi-coin block. Jump over the wall and you'll come to the stairway with
two Koopa Troopas coming. Here, you can perform the 'Extra Lives Cheat'
(see Secrets section for more details). Climb the staircase and jump over
    to the flagpole.

[ WORLD 3-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Paratroopa

Walkthrough
-----------
Stomp the Koopa Troopa then kick the shell and chase it and it will collide
with several enemies, racking up several points! Watch out though, as it will
bounce off a stump and come back towards you! Grab the three coins and bash the
block above the pillar for a Power-up. Stomp the Koopa Troopa and kick the
shell. You'll come to two small pillars, each two coin spaces high, and with a
Koopa Troopa trapped between them. There are two bricks above the Koopa. Fry
the Koopa, and start hitting the lower brick above him, which is a multi-coin
block. The brick above that one holds a Starman. If you are Regualar or Super
Mario, you should get the Starman first, use it to kill the Koopa and get the
multi-coin block.

Carry on then jump over the gap, over to a small patch of land with a small
pillar on it. Just jump across over the gap and carry on running. Stomp the
Koopa Troopa and kick the shell. Follow it, and it will hit several more Koopa
Troopas and you'll get an extra life, but avoid it when it bounces off the
pipe! Get the four coins above the pipe, then carry on running until you reach
the staircase. Climb to the top and jump over to the flagpole.

[ WORLD 3-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Buzzy Beetle
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa

Walkthrough
-----------
Jump up onto the tree, then kill the Buzzy Beetle on the tree next to it. The
little tree below the horizontally moving platforms has two coins on it. Jump
over onto the next tree, and grab the coin in the air. There are three coins on
the next tree. Stomp the Koopa Troopa on the next tree and kick the shell away.
The '?' Block has a Power-up. The tree below it has three coins and a Red Koopa
Troopa. The next tree has two coins on it. Hop onto the still elevator then
immediately jump onto the tree with the coin on it. Jump across from tree to
tree getting coins until you end up on the fourth one.

Jump onto the balance-elevator, get the coin, and jump over onto the other side
of the balance-elevator and get the next two coins. Jump onto one of the two
horizontally moving elevators above the little tree, then jump onto the
horizontally moving elevator to its right. Jump over to the tree cluster and
get all the coins. If you are Fiery Mario, fry the Koopa Paratroopa and jump
onto the tree on the other side of the gap. If you're not Fiery Mario, just
leap over the Koopa Paratroopa. There are two Koopa Troopas on the second tree.
Jump onto the horizontally moving elevator then jump onto the balance-elevator.
Stay on the left side until the right side is just about at the same height as
the one you are on, then leap onto the right side and take a running jump.
Mario should collide with the top of the flagpole.

[ WORLD 3-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Buzzy Beetle)

Walkthrough
-----------
Run to the end of the tunnel, and at this point, you have to leap over several
pillars, avoiding Podoboos and firebars. Once you safely get across, you'll
approach three '?' Blocks. The centre one holds a Power-up, and the other two
have coins. Jump through the firebars at the right time, then jump through the
next two firebars. The next two firebars rotate in opposite directions of the
previous firebars, so time your jump and try to get the coins to the right of
the firebar on the ceiling.

Jump over the lava pit when the Podoboo isn't jumping up, and avoid the Bowser
Decoy's flames, which should start coming towards you at this point. Jump over
the lava pits and soon you'll reach the Bowser Decoy. Fry him or grab the axe.
A third Mushroom Retainer will be there to tell you that the Princess is in
another castle. Oh well.

Level Enemies
-------------
- Lakitu
- Spiny

Walkthrough
-----------
Jump over the green pipe. The bottom '?' Block has a Power-up in it, and the
one above it holds a coin. Jump over the gap and start running. Grab the four
coins, and you'll soon come up to four '?' Blocks arranged like a square. They
all contain coins. You can jump onto the top two blocks and stomp Lakitu from
here. Jump over the gap and run up to the row of four '?' Blocks that all
contain coins. Jump on top of the block row and stand on top of the second
block from the right. Jump up to get a hidden 1-Up Mushroom.

Carrying on, jump onto the pillar and grab the coins in the air. Jump onto the
pipe and grab the next four coins in the air. You can enter the next pipe. If
you do, scroll down to the ***. Now you'll come to a huge cluster of coins
above a gap. The lower row has two bricks between them. All of the blocks
contain coins apart from the one on the lower row, third from the left block on
the left side of the gap. Carry on and jump over the pipe.

*** Jump over the two gaps. You'll come to the stairway. Instead of leaping off
the top step to get to the flagpole, drop down and you'll see a brick,
which is a multi-coin block. Get the coins, and then, do a walking jump
onto the block to get a bit of momentum, then leap up to the flagpole. You
can get 5000 with a bit of practise.

[ WORLD 4-2 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Buzzy Beetle

Walkthrough
-----------
Carefully jump onto the small island, then the even narrower island to its
right. Jump over the gap and walk over the bricks. Drop down the little gap and
get the three coins. Down here a couple of bricks should be sticking out of the
brick rectangle. Bash them, and the second one will have a Power-up. Go through
the tunnel, and kill the three Buzzy Beetles. Stand five coin spaces away from
where the tunnel opens and jump. You will break a brick. Jump up again and
you'll hit a multi-coin block. Carry on to where the '?' blocks are. The first
four hold coins. The middle on in the row of three next to the gap has a
Power-up in it, and the other two hold coins. Jump onto the elevator and jump
over the gap. Stand four coin spaces away from the gap to your left, and jump
up to reveal a hidden coin block. Go one coin space to your left and jump up to
reveal another hidden coin block. Use these two blocks to climb, and bash the
bricks above you. The brick on the very left has a vine in it, which will take
you to a Warp Zone leading to Worlds 6, 7 and 8. If you don't take it, then
jump over the next two pipes. You can enter the next pipe (scroll down to the
*** if you do). Jump over the next pipe and kill the two Koopa Troopas. Climb
the stumps and jump onto the pipe.

*** Jump over onto the next pillar and jump over onto the elevators. Jump onto
the lowest row of bricks, and above you, should be a row of three bricks.
Bash the middle one to get a hidden Power-up. Jump onto the next set of
elevators and jump over the gap. Jump over the pipe and kill the Koopa
Troopa. Jump over the next pipe and stomp the Buzzy Beetle, then kick it
away. Jump onto a descending elevator then jump onto the ground to your
right. If you are Fiery Mario, use fireballs to kill the Koopa Troopas.
There is a long row of bricks with coins on it here. Bash the very left
brick (the one without a coin on it) for a hidden Power-up. Run across the
brick row and collect the coins and jump onto the staircase. Jump onto the
pipe when the Pirahna Plant isn't sticking out. If you are Super/Fiery
Mario, you can bash the bricks above you and jump through onto the ceiling
and run past the exit pipe to get to Warp Zone, where it takes you to World
    5. If you go through the exit pipe, you will emerge at the staircase at the
    end of the level.

[ WORLD 4-3 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Koopa Troopa
- Koopa Paratroopa

NOTE: Some of the elevators are a bit shorter. Watch your step!

Walkthrough
-----------
Jump onto the first spotted mushroom then take running jump onto the mushroom
to your right once the Red Koopa Troopas are not on screen. There are five
coins here, and three coins on the mushroom above you to your left. Take a
running jump to the next mushroom, and kill the Koopa Paratroopa if you are
Fiery Mario. Drop down, kill the Koopa Troopa and get the three coins here.
Climb the mushrooms, and bash the '?' Block for a Power-up.

Jump onto the balance-elevator, and get the coin if you're daring enough. You
can make the elevator snap for 1000 points and get the other coin by using the
vertically moving elevator to its right. Jump onto the next elevator then leap
over the patch of mushrooms. There are three coins on the mushroom above the
one with the Red Koopa Troopa on it, three on the one to its right, and one
coin on the mushroom below that one. Kill the Koopa Troopa on the Mushroom
before the balance-elevator. Jump from this elevator to the next one and get
the coin if you can, then jump over to the mushroom with five coins on it.
Carry on jumping from mushroom to mushroom, and you'll come to a vertically
moving elevator. Jump onto this, and wait for it to move up to its maximum
height. When it does, take a running jump and you'll reach the flagpole.

[ WORLD 4-4 ] ----------------------------------------------------------------

Level Enemies
-------------
- Bowser Decoy (Spiny)

Walkthrough
-----------
This is the first maze castle. Here's how to get through it. Jump over the lava
pit onto the pillar. Leap over the next lava pit, then jump up on top of the
brick formation. Run right at full speed and Mario will skip over the thin
strips of brick. Carry on running and avoid the firebar. Jump through the
tunnel and you'll see some awkwardly shaped bricks on a lava pit. Jump up to
the top, and you'll see the bricks have been divided into three routes. Take
the bottom one. Avoid the firebars, and keep running, and you'll eventually
meet up with the Bowser Decoy. There is a firebar on the bridge this time and a
Podoboo pops up at times. If you're Fiery Mario, I'd suggest staying in the
'trench' to the left of the bridge and throw fireballs at the Bowser Decoy from
a safe distance. Once he's down, carefully cross the bridge. Get the axe, and
then you'll find a fourth Mushroom Retainer. Seems like the princess isn't here
this time.
