-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Back to the Future II & III are the sequels to the first game on the NES.
Both II and III are on the same game cartridge; you start the game on II and
once you beat it, you immediately begin III. Anyway, this is one of the more
difficult and tedious NES games around to play. It is basically a scavenger
hunt where you have to find various objects and return them to their proper
locations. There are plenty of puzzles to figure out, and LOTS of running
around to do. And to top it all off, there is no save feature so you must do
it ALL in one single sitting! The game itself could have been made better in
so many ways, and probably would not have been so tedious had it been on a
more advanced system. All in all, if you have many consecutive hours to kill
and are up for a long adventure/puzzler, this may do it for you. Beware of
the difficulty, however!

================
General Gameplay
================

The main premise of the game is that there are 30 artifacts scattered around
the three eras of BttF 2 (10 in BttF 3), and you must return each of them to
their proper time periods. The objects can be found in the rooms (doors) you
will pass as you wander around. Initially the doors are locked, but you can
open them by finding keys by defeating certain enemies or even finding them
in midair. There is a list of exactly what enemies drop keys and where in
BttF 2 below.

Once you have a key, you can unlock an Object Room (the door). Inside, you
will have to play a mini-game of sorts where you must collect all the small
clock icons, then grab the trophy that appears at the end to retrieve the
object. Now, to return the object, you must find a Puzzle Room. These are not
in locked doors, but hidden in more obscure locations, such as below manholes
and inside pipes.

Inside a Puzzle Room, you will see a word scrambled up, and a grid below it.
Select the object that corresponds to the scrambled word and you will have
successfully returned it. If you pick the WRONG object however, you will not
only be kicked out, but you'll have to obtain that object all over again from
its original Object Room. Be careful! Keep in mind that Object Rooms and
Puzzle Rooms will be in entirely different time periods and streets than each
other, so it's not as simple as you think. In BttF 3, the Object/Puzzle Rooms
that coincide with each other are both on the same street, however.

In BttF 3, the same kind of elements also apply. This time though, instead of
doors, the Object Rooms will be in caves (you still need keys to enter
them!), and the Puzzle Rooms can be found underneath rocks you can jump on to
crumble.

In both games, there are also Bonus Rooms you can enter only once. In these,
you will have to collect all of the icons scattered about in a limited amount
of time. If you do this, a pizza pie will appear; grab it in time to get 5
extra lives. If you run out of time, you get nothing. Bonus Rooms can only be
entered once though; once you played it, you can't enter again.

====================
Time Travel (BttF 2)
====================

As you would probably guess, a main element of the game is travelling through
various time periods. You start the game in the "present day" of 1985. In
order to travel through time, you need the Remote Control to summon your car.
You will find that on an adjacent street in 1985. Once you have that, select
it on the submenu and the car will appear; jump in and you will be able to
pick what time you want to go to. Keep in mind though, that time travel uses
fuel, in the form of small nuclear symbols you collect by defeating enemies
and just finding them along the way. The cost of fuel is as follows:

1955 <-> 1985  10 fuel units
1985 <-> 2015  10 fuel units
1955 <-> 2015  17 fuel units

=======
Compass
=======

In BttF 2, you will be able to find a Compass. This handy item, when selected
on the submenu, will tell you what time period you are in, what street you're
on, as well as what coordinate (x) of the street you are currently standing
at. It will prove invaluable when trying to locate enemies and the various
rooms throughout the game. In BttF 3, there is no Compass, but luckily it is
a more linear path to follow, so it's not needed as much.

=======
Enemies
=======

Throughout the game, you will no doubt run into your fair share of various
types of enemies. If you get hit by any of them, you will lose a life
instantly. You can defeat pretty much all of them by simply jumping on them
(even the spiky shelled ones). When defeated, enemies will sometimes leave
behind soda/pizza, fuel, or even Keys/Seeds. Certain enemies may drop a star
icon, which if collected, allows you to shoot rocks/balls as a weapon.

=====================
Extra Lives/Game Over
=====================

You start the game with 10 lives. When you lose all of them, you will get a
Game Over, of course. There are unlimited continues, so you can keep playing
as long as you like even if you get to the dreaded Game Over screen. You will
get to keep any objects you found if you lose all your lives. The only things
you lose are any Keys you may have been holding, and your score. In the game,
you will find soda bottles and slices of pizza. Soda counts for 1 unit, pizza
counts for 10. If you get 100 units, you will get an extra life. When you
first jump out of your car or off a hoverboard, you will be temporarily
invulnerable (but you will kill any enemies you touch in this brief time).

================
Seeds and Stalks
================

At certain points, you may find some platforms to be inaccessible just by
jumping or even travelling between time periods. That is where Seeds come in.
If you get one and select it on the submenu, you will plant it where you are
currently standing. It may not do much then, but if you travel to a future
time period, it will have grown into a full stalk which you can jump on to
reach higher areas. It serves no purpose to plant a seed in 2015, but you can
do so in 1955 and 1985 to have a stalk available in the future.

NOTE: In this game, the Puzzle Rooms are located on the same street as the
      Object Rooms they coincide with (usually hidden under rocks you can
      crumble), so I see no reason to list them separately here. As for
      enemies who drop Keys, many of the dark gunmen who run around shooting
      their guns, or the small white hat enemies, will drop them. Since there
      is no coordinate system to better narrow it down, I cannot list their
      exact locations.

NOTE: These maps are not drawn to any sort of scale. The purpose is to show
      you what streets are directly connected to each other. Since there is
      no Compass in this part of the game, I have numbered the streets in the
      order I visited them.

On the title screen, hold Select and press B to access a hidden password
screen. You will see a whole string of letters scrambled around. You will
have to rearrange the entire thing so that it reads FLUXCAPACITORISTHEPOWER.
Once you do this, you will be able to skip to the BttF 3 game right from the
start. You receive this password once you beat BttF 2 the regular way as
well.
