Why Does Big Luigi after a Fire Flower turn into Fiery Mario?

I just dont understand.

It's probably because of the NES's limited hardware. The NES allows you to have 4 different colors for a particular sprite. For Mario and Luigi, they used the same sprite with a different palette. They used a third palette for the fire powerup. The fourth palette was used for something else, transparency maybe?

It's just the colors they decided to use. It has no plot significance.

Besides, why do they smash bricks with their heads and not get a concussion? Why do they collect floating coins and warp down giant pipes? Why do mushrooms make them grow bigger?
