"NARC: Another Arcade-to-NES port that gets harder while porting"
Have you ever wanted to bust up the local drug dealers/drug users? Nows your chance! (No, don't grab a machine gun and try to infiltrate a drug dealer's house, they'll eat you alive. On second thought, try it and see how long you survive. You may even have an easier time pulling it off than you would in this game (God forbid)). In NARC, you get to do JUST that, shoot, arrest, and/or kill drug dealers or users. But your journey is a long and hard one. Lets get to the review.
Graphics: 8/10- Pretty well detailed for the NES. Try shooting a gang member with a rocket. Did you like the feeling of seeing him explode into a buncha tiny flaming pieces? Do it again! And again! And again!
Sound: 7/10- The usual sounds for the NES. Not much to say here.
Music: 6/10- Some of it is pretty catchy, but nothing you're going to remember remember a few days later.
Control: 3/10- This is what happens when you try to cram 4 buttons into a two button controller. To fire off a rocket, you have to push the fire button repeatedly until he does it. It takes a while to pull that off though. Same with jumping, but with the duck button.
Gameplay: 5/10- Your character moves painfully slowly, stage three shows the worst of that. And with the above-mentioned control problems, it only gets worse. In a few stages later in the game, dogs start appearing, and if one gets up to where you are, you're pretty well screwed, because you have to pound the controller buttons to shoot it off of you, and since the dog biting you slows your movement, that will take a while. There are also more problems later on, but I'll leave it to you to get there.
Difficulty: Irritatingly hard- Unless you pull off the continue game cheat, you only have THREE (count 'em, three) lives to go through eight stages. And even with the continue game cheat, you still only have precious FEW continues. Add the problem with some enemies I just mentioned, and you get a ****ing hard game. Your cop will probably have more holes than swiss cheese when you get to the final stage at this rate.
Rent or buy: You can't rent it anymore, so I am going to say buy or better yet, download a ROM if you can find one.
Conclusion: Its a fun game, but not without a frustrating difficulty level.
