Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance

Review by AceUltraGamer

"Believe it or not, this game DOES have a good part: Pushing all the characters down a pit one after another!"

-------
Synopsis: An RPG version of an old fantasy novel called Dragonlance. Though I am not familiar with the books or the basic story, the plot is basically that you're a group of heroes going through the ruins of an old city, slaying dragons, monsters, etc., to obtain some magic disks or something along those lines.
-------
Graphics: Very bad. The game came out in 1991, yet the graphics could have been made years, maybe even a decade earlier. The people and monsters are just a few multi-colored pixels, while the levels have minimum detail to them. A huge let down due to its cheapness.
-------
Play Control: This is the worst part of the game. The controls are super slow and not very responsive making combat very challenging. So challenging that I skipped past most enemies. The enemies themselves are not much faster. If this game is played, beware of the tediousness of trying to complete it with these bad controls. Some buttons do not even really do anything for the few buttons on controllers back then.
-------
Game Design: Also atrocious. Though it is a bad RPG, even though I generally like RPGs, this game was not fun at all with the way it was set up. Without a walkthrough, you're going through mazes of frustration. With a walkthrough, it's still just boring room after room that all looks the same. It was also a very short game, though that's good because I couldn't handle any more of this awfulness.
-------
Satisfaction: When I saw the title, it looked like a very fun adventure/fantasy RPG with cool dragons and stuff in it. When I played it, it didn't surprise me why many people claim that this is the worst game ever made. Now I don't know if I would make that call, but with different controls, graphics, pretty much everything being different, the game could be decent, but since everything about this game sucked, it is near the bottom of my list of games as well.
-------
Sound: Mildly heroic music, lacking much sound effects at all. And these tracks are repetitive to boot. The sound might be the best part of the game, because the rest of it is horrible, but the sound isn't amazing or anything either.
-------
Comments: Perhaps if you're a huge fan of this random novel made 20+ years ago, and you're the world's biggest loser/nerd, and you don't have any games made past 1991, or this is the only game you ever played, you might enjoy this game just a little bit. Otherwise, strictly avoid this piece of trash. And they even made 3 more sequels to this game too. Though I haven't played those games yet, it scares me to think of what lies in those cartridges.

Ultimate Rating: 1/10
