Renegade
Review by Walker Boh Ohmsford
"Ah, the immense satisfaction of beating people up."
Taito is just your average video game company. They've given us such games as Demon Sword, the incredibly hard but still good Dungeon Magic, and even the exquisite Lufia series came from them. Also from Taito came Renegade. I don't remember the exact story, just that it has four stages and you beat up guys along the way. I gather that you're supposed to beat up some rival gang or something. One thing's for sure. Mr. Big, the main baddy in Renegade's sequel (Target: Renegade), makes no appearance here, so why he would want revenge is anyone's guess. Maybe there's something they're not telling us?
Control 10-10. The controls of this game bring to mind those in Double Dragon. You perform your special moves in a similar fashion. In fact, they're pretty much the same, except that you have the option of beginning your adventure on whatever stage you wish if you know the proper codes.
Audio 10-10. What's with fighting games and funky music? I'm not kidding! The music in this game absolutely rocks! The first level theme has to be my alltime favorite. In fact, this game's music is even better than that of Target: Renegade, and considering that I liked the music in that game, that's saying something. The SFX are a big step above those of Target: Renegade. This game mercifully does not feature that annoying sound for when you got hit hard by a boss in the sequel. That got really annoying really fast. Since it was a square wave it sounded almost like he was saying ''Wahh!'' The fact that it was also a very high-pitched and on the whole piercing sound, it really got annoying. Anyway, this game's sound was pretty damn cool, with rather painful noises for when you or an opponent suffered damage. There's even separate sounds for the motorcycles. Possibly this is a good thing, but this game lacks any kind of engine noises for the motorcycles, as those in the sequel could get extremely annoying after a while, even if at first they were the coolest noises in the game. Renegade does however have very neat music for when you're riding a motorcycle, and the sounds of the enemy bikes ramming you is neat as well.
Story ?? As I said above I didn't catch the story of this game. I only rented the game, and a lot of those games have had their instructions stolen long before you got there.
Overall 10-10. This game, if a bit short, is a good buy if you can find it. The level of challenge isn't nearly as unbearable as its sequel tended to be, and this game seems to have a satisfactory ending, even if it's not anything grand.
