"Disney Meets Mega Man"
Anyone who was a kid in the early nineties remembers the Disney Afternoon block of cartoons. From DuckTales to Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin to Bonkers, Capcom has been there to make games out of them. One of my favorites is Darkwing Duck.
Story The story of Darkwing Duck isn't too complicated. The evil organization F.O.W.L. has taken over the city of St. Canard and it's up to our hero Darkwing Duck, and his trusty pilot/sidekick Launchpad McQuack to save the day. The villains, from MegaVolt to Wolfduck, are all from old Darkwing episodes.
Gameplay The gameplay of Darkwing is close to that of a Mega Man game. You start with a Gas Gun and can pick up three other types of gas to use: Arrow Gas, which you can use as platforms; Heavy Gas, which you can use as a strong attack; and Thunder Gas, which sprays two lightning bolts at angles. The stage setup is also similar to MM. You fight three villains, then three more stages open up. Defeat them and the final stage opens.
Graphics The graphics in Darkwing are very nice. Coming out towards the end of the NES' run, it had some of the best graphics on the system. Darkwing is a good size and so are the rest of the characters. Unlike the TurboGrafx 16 version, projectiles are easy to see and deflect. The backgrounds are basic MM fodder, but still look nice and don't detract from the game.
Sounds The sound effects are alright, but not too great. Darkwing's shots and landing effects sound nothing like they should. You would think it was Mega Man that was landing with the metallic sound. Oh well, what else can we expect from the classic NES. The music is pretty nice for the game, but can get annoying after a while.
Controls The controls are very sharp in DWD. The game reacts nicely to your controls. Darkwing pulls up his cape and fires his gun with ease.
Rent/Buy Considering that no one really rents out classic Nintendo games anymore, you'd have to buy this one. If you can't find it at a yardsale anywhere, hit up eBay where you should be able to find a copy for less than 10 dollars.
Overall If you're a fan of Darkwing Duck or the Mega Man series, then this game is for you. If not, give it a try. It wouldn't hurt you know, so let's get dangerous!
