"Not what we were hoping for, but not bad"
When Double Dragon came out in the arcades it was all the rage. Anticipation was high when word got out that this one was coming to the home systems. When it finally hit, people were intially disappointed. Gone were the foxy ladies, the smooth combos, and worst of all the two player option that made the game so popular (this last feature was later found on the Sega Master System edition, a fact that made NES fans insanely jealous!) However, once you got over the initial shock Double Dragon turned out to be a pretty good game.
You play as Billy Lee, the red-headed hero who must save his girlfriend Marion, who resembles wolf-man Jack. She gets slugged in tht tummy by a ''Williams'', a large headed character who would later be the model for River City Ransom! And off you go--Fighting weird Afro ladies, martial arts guys, and so on. The last level is very hard because you have to get by a wall of jutting bricks that has no mercy! After that, you have to battle the now-famous Willy, who wields an equally famous machine gun. Then you fight your brother Jimmy and save your girlfriend and also her cat ( I guess, he is under the table at the end of the game.)
On with the ratings!
Graphics=7.8 Not what we wanted or expected. They are not to bad however and the Abobo is a classic figure in NES history. The green version resembles the rock guy from the fantastic four.
Sound=6.0 Nothing that great. The levels have music, but it's nothing I'm sure you will remember or talk about. Not that anyone likes to hear you talk about video game music anyway.
Play control=7.1 He kicks, he punches, he learns some special moves! It's still a little slow for a fighting game and jumping can be a pain. It's too easy to fall in water or off a cliff and die.
Challenge=9.0 Surprisingly tricky in the last stage. The aforementioned bricks and bosses are pretty tough customers. A worthy challenge.
Storyline=2.0 Save your girlfreind, yah we know.....from your brother-- big surprise...
Overall=7.0 A middle of the road fighter for the NES. Lack of a two player mode really hurts this one, but still a fun one player game--until the last stage!!
