"Ikari Warriors made me run to the store and buy it."
Ok, it didn't really make me run to the store to go and buy it. I really don't know how this game came into my possession. Just another one of those games I found in that big NES game bag. But, I got to tell ya, this is one of the GREATEST games I have ever played!!! I mean, once you get over the insanely hard difficulty of the game, it's not such a bad game! I mean, just get a Game Genie and put in an infinite lives code and I guess infinite bullets too. You'll enjoy it. Ok, time to start the review.
Concept- 9/10
Fo yo info, this was the first ever game in the arcades to use a joy stick that went in ALL directions. Anyway, this is one of the first ever shoot em ups and it brought on that whole genre of shooting random people that cross your path. Its great fun! I'm guessing, you and another person (2 player mode) are on a plane over Vietnam and it was shot down. And now, you 2(or just you alone) have to find your way out of the jungle and get to your base or something. So that means you have to shoot every person, tank, helicopter, and freakmoster things (monkeys???) that cross your path on the insanely long levels. NEATO!
Graphics- 7/10
Ok, this gets a "Meh." They could have been better for the time period that it came out. (1987) Of course comparing it to the arcade version, its crap. Sheer crap. The arcade version had it going on! But anyway, they kind of look like a lesser version of Super Mario Bros. And that game came out 2 years before this one. So, they aren't that bad, but they could have done a lot on improvement. But they did all right on the explosions. So, it's all not that bad.
Music/Sound- 10/10
This game had the best musical score I've ever heard!!!!! The song repeats though but it sooo makes you seem like you are in some kind of war. Duh! And those sound effects! The throwing of grenades, the shooting noises, the sound it makes when you get shot....total ownzor of my face into an obliviated green hole that sucks trash into it and burns it. I really enjoy this games music and sound effects, as you can see.
Controls- 10/10
I've said this many times, and I'll say it again. YOU SHOULD NEVER DISS ON THE NES'S CONTROLLER!!! A, B, Start, and the directional pad. That's all you use in this game. With A being the button that tosses the grenades and shoots missiles while in a tank and B for shooting bullets on land and in helicopters, how hard can the rest be? The directional pad's directions are basically self explanatory and the start button pauses it. The only tricky part is the "getting out of the tank" part. I always forget how to get out of those. That would be the only possible thing to drop the controls down to a 9/10 but I'm not because this games is so GREAT!!!
Replay Value- 10/10
Hours of laughs, cries, and enjoyable, precious memories of playing the game till sunrise. =*) Good times back then. You'll be playing this game for such a long time if you have in the Game Genie cheats in. But if not, burn the game, for you will not get far at all. The levels are HUGE and it takes me and my friend Kevin 30 minutes to beat the first level!!! And almost an hour to beat the second! That's how much fun you can get out of this joyful game!
Rent or Buy?
BUY. Definite buy, this game is. You should never think twice about it. Unless it's at an extremely high price for any NES game. But forget about that. Get it for maybe 2 bucks and enjoy hours of fun! =] I know me and Kev will if he comes over this weekend.
NEW SECTION!!!~The Rundown- This basically gives an over all summary of what I think of the game. Normally 1 sentence.
Life consuming, great, TOTALLY AWESOME game unless without Game Genie.
